Spook
August is going to be a good month for music. As we’re sure it will be rife with the normal amount of notable releases, there’s one in particular we’re looking forward to. Coming via the UK, Gist Is, the debut full length album (out Aug 5th) from Adult Jazz, will surely dazzle music lovers around the world.
Like a bunch of giddy school kids who just found out they’ll soon be touring Disneyland, we’re admittedly experiencing overwhelming excitement after listening to the breathtaking piece that is “Spook.” Describing this song is no easy feat. It’s not your traditional pop song, stacked heavily in favor of it’s catchy hooks. This is a tune that takes a while to sink in.
Taking it’s time, “Spook” casually builds up, focusing highly on an odd, yet inviting vocal arrangement from the lead singer. Joined together by some fluttering piano notes and low, brooding strings, the listener is pleasantly lost, not knowing what to expect. As time goes by, we’re welcomed into a bevy of instrumentation, articulately calculating a well-dressed and impressive song.
While one expect this to be a culminating swirl of cinematic-structured rock goodness, you’d be wrong. As we stated before, the structure is anything but traditional, which can be found in multiple places, but most notably at the 4:30 mark of this nearly ten minute song.
Transcending across every musical norm that we’re used to, Adult Jazz casually and effectively embraces anti-pop, heady approach, giving the music world a breath of fresh air.
One thing is for certain: we simply cannot fucking wait for this album. Pardon our french, but the music nerd in us is currently hyperventilating.
