Hoodie Allen, the beloved hip/hop artists for his uplifting and genuine style, just released a comedic video for his single James Franco off the Leap Year Mixtape. We previously featured a video from the same release for the song “Chase Is On” a couple months back and now we have Hoodie Allen walking down Venice Beach and Hollywood blvd chanting the Anthem James Franco (if there ever was one) and the randomness that goes along with its street characters. With cut out, over imposed faces of James Franco on people, witty lyrics and a feel good beat, it is easy to love this video and still love James Franco.
A year has now passed since Hoodie Allen released his highly-acclaimed mixtape Pep Rally, combining hip/hop with electronica all the while sampling some of the best indie tracks of that year. Pep Rally showed the world Allen’s maturity over his debut mixtape Making Waves back in 2009, and with every release his flow, confidence and production have increased tenfold. Leap Year, set to be released July 26th, still adheres to the same feel-good vibe Hoodie is known for yet unlike his previous releases, he new mixtape is much more introspective, letting people into who he is and hes view on the environment around him.
“The Chase Is On”, Hoodie Allen’s new single released today accompanied by a music video featuring himself courting the very lovely Sofia Black D’Elia (MTV’s Skins), is about the excitement of meeting that person for the first time and the mysteries that come with it. As a huge fans of Hoodie Allen, I can’t wait to get my hands on Leap Year. You can count on us to let you know once it drops.
While Hoodie Allen was gracious enough to give us a free download to all The Music Ninja fans, please still show him support by purchasing the song on iTunes.
Hoodie will be touring after the release of Leap Year, here are all the dates for the month of August. Continue reading →
The wonderfully-monikered Hoodie Allen is a rising star in hip-hop, and based on his reworking of ‘NY Is Killing Me’, it’s not hard to see why. Originally by Gil Scott-Heron and remixed by Jamie xx, Hoodie Allen’s fast-flowing lyrics fill the atmospheric soundscapes with a sense of urgency and passion as he tells his tales of love and hate set against the backdrop of New York. Sick beats power this reworking and will make it sure-fire club hit. The second track off his forthcoming mixtape ‘Leap Year’ (the brilliant ‘Dreams Up’ being the first) prove Hoodie Allen’s skills as a producer and rapper, making him an exciting new talent on the scene.
Editor’s Note: We want to make things more convenient for you incase you missed a post. I’ll let this least speak for itself. All we ask is that you share it with your friends! Enjoy! -Blas
Four months is already a long time to wait for the feel good rhymes of one of our favorite indie rappers/songwriters Hoodie Allen. The wait is finally over and starting a new year has never felt this great. Dreaming up and dreaming big, Hoodie Allen first single off his forthcoming mix-tape Leap Year is a warm and hopeful track capable of turning your day around and the fact that he choose to sample Oh Land’s White Nights, increases my respect and admiration for him tenfold. As a self described music nerd, It is really his ability to cross between genres, create powerful hip/hop anthems and break from the typical arrogance displayed in current mainstream hip/hop today that sets Hoodie apart from the rest. With only eighteen days in, 2011 feels like the year for Hoodie Allen already.
