HARD Summer 2014 Live Sets: JUSTIN JAY

As we roll over into the month of February, we’re eagerly awaiting the announcement of a new Resident Artist. It’s something that we look forward to after the first of every month. There’s just something about getting everything lined up for four full weeks of content based around a single artist that gets us pretty damn stoked.

This month, we’re pleased to welcome in the youngest member of the Dirtybird family, none other than Mr. Justin Jay. Even at the young age of just 21, this Angelino has already garnered support from giants like Claude VonStroke, Jamie Jones, Disclosure, and Pete Tong. Using elements of his soul, funk and jazz roots, he brings in naturally dancy elements to his house tunes, creating forward-thinking and infectious soundscapes worthy of not only the best moments on the dance floor, but also those spent grooving in your bathroom mirror while getting ready for the day.

Coming around the bend, you’ll be catching an exclusive interview, some new music, and a selection of Jay’s favorite tunes. Make sure to keep up with him on facebook and twitter so you don’t miss out.

They Don't Know (Justin Jay Remix)

While big room and progressive house have dominated the EDM scene since its explosion, the underground is beginning to slip its way into the spotlight of major festivals and media outlets. Claude Von Stroke’s DirtyBird Records just recently celebrated their 10 year anniversary of being a leader amongst forward-thinking labels and is home to some of the scenes most promising talent. 22-year-old producer, Justin Jay, was taken under the wing of Dirtybird not too long ago and has developed his own impressive career in a rather short time. He continues to surprise fans with every move he makes and is set up for a monumental year with a secured spot on Holy Ship! and an forthcoming EP on Pet Recordings.

Justin Jay thought it was appropriate to bring out his darker side to fans with his first remix of the year as he takes on the UK’s Disciples‘ “They Don’t Know.” Storming in with a whirlwind of gritty bass shivers, spine-tingling synth chords, and conniving vocal manipulation, the LA prodigy exhibits what true imagination exists in his musical brain. Although this remix does not accommodate to the cheerful crowd, Justin Jay is sure to expose open-minded fans to a world they have yet to travel into. The remix will be released on February 22nd via Pete Tong’s FFRR Records.

Laffy Taffy (Justin Jay's Halloween Edit)

It’s Friday Ninja Nation, you’ve made it through another grinding work week. And since we feel like letting loose, why not express that feeling by posting another absurdly amazing underground house cut from the Dirtybird camp’s resident wunderkind, Justin Jay. Today Mr. Jay’s got us feeling all kinds of middle-school dancey with an appropriate edit of D4L’s “Laffy Taffy” to commemorate this Halloween season, and we’ve been doing our best “Miley Cyrus at the VMA’s” impression to keep up with the tune’s addictive nature. Justin Jay crafts his revision on the back of some analog sounding 808 bass and rolling drum work which kicks up into a hypnotic melody before D4L’s rudimentary lyricism -which works like gangbusters on this record- comes blasting through to create one of the young gun’s most consumable tracks yet. When pressed on the tune Justin stated: “Dirtybird’s 10-year anniversary is creeping up, which is crazy.” Justin says, “Can’t believe the label’s been doing its thing for 10-years. I wish I’d been in on it since I was 11, but I was getting down to jamz like this at the time so I can’t really complain. With Halloween coming up, this just had to happen…”. To keep up with the Halloween spirit, and to celebrate their 10th anniversary, Dirtybird Records are giving this one away on the house, so snag it here and roll out your dance moves… because it’s Friday.

Sugar & Cinnamon (Justin Jay Remix)

Oh, how those filthy and proper artists with the Dirtybird Records camp always seem to hit the nail on the head when it comes to their impeccable slate of tasty-creative dance releases. Dirtybird’s baby brother Justin Jay, whom we had the pleasure of seeing live a few weeks back at Denver’s Snowball Music Festival, dropped this remix for label boss Claude Von Stroke‘s sweat inducing single “Sugar & Cinnamon” and it had us hop-stepping all over our office. The slightly techy, deep-house pulsing cut from Justin Jay comes as part of Von Stroke’s official remix counterpart album for the head honcho’s last LP, Urban Animal, which if you haven’t had the chance to hear yet is a can’t miss for our dance aficionados. Justin Jay sprinkles his forward thinking dance production onto the original through some quirky, snappy percussion – fitting perfectly in line with the rest of Dirtbird’s funky output – an arpeggiated synth progression and a bassline which wouldn’t be out of place on the grittiest of Shiba San or Sirus Hood G-House tracks. We fell all over this one, so if a little bit of dance lean sounds like a great way to enhance your day, then you’ve found the perfect tune.
