[Hip-Hop/Dubstep] Lupe Fiasco – American Terrorist II

Lupe Fiasco is no stranger to dubstep.  He’s already laid down some slick bars over production by Bassnectar and Nero before. It can even be said that he’s the most dubstep-friendly rapper out there now, paving the path for fellow emcees like Kanye West, B.o.B, and Childish Gambino to follow. With that in mind, it shouldn’t shock you that his latest song plays around with some of those same dubstep elements. Lupe first leads us in with some inspring piano riffs, before dropping the hammer on us with the hook. The song itself is a unique departure from the previous iteration(s) in the series. Although released out of order (“American Terrorist III” came out sometime late last year), the focus of the songs remain on certain political commentary related to warfare. Of the three, “American Terrorist II”  simultaneously bears  the most uplifting and most hopeless message, mentioning idealistic youngsters who want to save the world, juxtaposed with a hook that cries out “Where are those heroes/Where are those superheroes.” Like most Lupe tracks, it effectively gets its message across.

There’s no telling if this leak will be on Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Part 1, but we should cherish every release we get from here on out, as the masterful lyricist recently announced his retirement on Twitter.

[Hip-Hop] Lupe Fiasco – Lamborghini Angels (Prod. Mr. Inkredible)

While Lupe’s last two singles haven’t been very convincing, I can now safely say that’s he back to making the same quality music that initially earned him his dedicated fanbase.  On “Lamborghini Angels” Lupe Fiasco brings that same political and social awareness that separates him from the masses, touching on subjects as graphic as child molestation and as diverse as materialistic indulgence.  Before dropping his new track, he even sent out a warning out through Twitter for those who might be easily offended by the subject matter, which likely served as a great way to increase the buzz surrounding this cut. As with most Lupe tracks, while the content may get pretty serious, the song itself is incredibly catchy.  I wouldn’t be surprised to hear this dominating the radiowaves for what remains of summer.

Stream the track below and, if you want to add this gem to your library, you can download it now on iTunes.  Be on the look out for Lupe Fiasco’s new album with the incredibly long name, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1 (we really need a new acronym for that), set to drop on September 25th.

[Mashup] DJ Earworm – United State of Pop 2011

Not many mashups make it to The Music Ninja but when DJ Earworm drops his massive yearly mashups, we just sit here in awe of his work. We hate mashups because many people can put two songs that song alike together, yet the amount of work gone into these United State of Pop must be a lot more than we can ever imagine. Yes all POP music might sound the same, and as much as we have bashed and continued to bash, at the end of the day it is still music and in some special way, it does make the world a better place.

[Electronic] Lupe Fiasco – Words I Never Said ft. Skylar Grey (Sound Remedy Remix)

Seems that our brains build associations with music. You hear one thing, and expect something to follow. You hear Ke$ha’s voice, and expect nausea. You hear soft buildups in a hip hop remix song, and expect a dubstep beat. Well, it’s always nice when someone does just the opposite.

When Sound Remedy’s remix opens up, I couldn’t help but think – this is going to be a wicked build up for a filthy dubstep song. Then a little mini break came. No beat. No wobble. Huh. More buildup. Okay, the beat will drop in soon – can’t wait. The beat never comes, but what follows can only be described as sheer auditory pleasure. A few minutes of blissful synth and Skylar Grey’s wavering vocals.

Sound Remedy has thrown up some great remixes (check out his James Blake track), and while this won’t get people moving on the dance floor, it was a welcome change of pace from what we’re used to.

[Hip/Hip] Lupe Fiasco – Words (Ft. Skylar Grey)

Lupe Fiasco is back, and this time his “Words” take a more political turn. In the song, Lupe flawlessly delivers his lines, and although his tracks have always been filled with meaning, “Words” touches closer to home for many people around the world. Parting from the generic hip-hop beat, Lupe lays down his tightly knit rhymes over a Glitch Mob styled electronic beat. The deep base kicks add an extra punch to his lyrics. The chorus however, is not as praise-worthy. Though it provides a catchy hook for the song, the singing is nothing new or unique, and Skylar Grey’s voice sounds overly filtered. Skylar’s choice of lyrics give the vibe of a nostalgic, regretful love song, rather than reflecting the political incentive fueling Lupe. The chorus does not add or detract from the song, and thus makes “Words” an enjoyable listen and a clear example of Lupe’s lyrical prowess.
