[NEW] Major Lazer – Aerosol Can (Feat. Pharrell)

Major Lazer
Aerosol Can (feat. Pharrell Williams)

The year of Pharrell carries over into 2014, as the Grammy award winning musician collaborates with Major Lazer for this brand new single. While he’s worn many hats throughout his career (including this very ugly one), it seems like it’s been an eternity since we’ve heard from Pharrell the rapper. Premiered earlier today by Zane Lowe on BBC Radio One, the N.E.R.D. frontman sounds perfectly at home on this beat, enough so that you’d think he produced it himself. Stream the track above, and be on the lookout for Major Lazer’s new Apocalypse Soon EP, set to drop on Februrary 25th and include additional features from Sean Paul, Machel Montano, RDX, Moska, and Mr. Fox.

Watch Performances From Last Night’s 56th Annual Grammy Awards

Let’s face it: the Grammy’s blow. They’re a total misrepresentation of the actual trends happening in music, and are usually at least two to three steps behind the curve. The Recording Academy is out of touch with the culture, and while the awards still have some meaning to them, the show lacks the same significance it had in previous generations. With that mini rant out of the way, I would like to congratulate all of last night’s winners, and don’t want to take anything away from the artists themselves or any of their accomplishments. What we are here to do today is highlight one of the positive aspects of the show: the performances. From 33 couples getting married during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ rendition of “Same Love,” Kendrick Lamar‘s frenetic display during an insane mashup of “M.A.A.D. City” and “Radioactive” with Imagine Dragons, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr re-uniting as one half of The Beatles, and finally to Jay-Z and Beyoncé giving us a glimpse into their chemistry together on stage, this year’s awards had plenty to offer in terms of entertainment value. Check out some of the best ones below, and let us know your thoughts on which one was your favorite.

Daft Punk, Pharrell, Nile Rodgers & Stevie Wonder

[Soul] Aloe Blacc – Love Is The Answer (Feat. Pharrell)

Aloe Blacc
Love Is The Answer (Feat. Pharrell)

Another single, another hit produced by Pharrell. Singer/Songwriter Aloe Blacc‘s track “Love Is The Answer’, off his Wake Me Up EP, dropped earlier this week. Blacc channels Stevie Wonder on this light-hearted, uplifting ballad. Pharrell has definitely been killing it this summer with new tunes, but this time he fades into the background and lets Blacc’s voice shine through. Bringing in some horns and strong vocals revolving around love, this catchy tune is a taste of the past brought into modern times. Mixing some 70’s goodness with an organic jazz beat, this throwback sound is available now on iTunes

[R&B] The Weeknd – Wanderlust (Pharrell Remix)

The Weeknd
Wanderlust (Pharrell Remix)

Hit-maker and Virgina-bred artist Pharrell Williams has been killing it this summer with a series of infectious hits. He’s already teamed up for some major summer anthems with Daft Punk s “Get Lucky” and Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines” alongside T.I. So, it was only a matter of time before he took the time to collaborate with one of Toronto’s rising stars, The Weeknd. Getting ready for his upcoming debut, the two crooners drop a remix to “Wanderlust.” Adding some smooth vocals over a re-worked groovy beat, the pair were able to make a solid R&B/pop duet. This track will be featured as a bonus listen on The Weeknd’s Kiss Land, dropping September 10th. A full stream of the album can be found over at NPR

[Remix] Daft Punk – Get Lucky (T.I. Remix)

Daft Punk
Get Lucky (Remix) (Feat. Pharrell & T.I.)

Although he’s commonly known as the King of the Trap, T.I. has no problems with getting in touch with his inner pimp. He’s already explored this side of his personality on such singles as “My Love” with Justin Timberlake, and most recently, “Blurred Lines” alongside Robin Thicke and Pharrell. One thing that seems certain as we listen to this remix of Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky,” is that it definitely doesn’t seem to be official. Hell, it’s even debatable whether Tip’s verse was specifically recorded for this track all, as his flow sounds a bit discordant at times. However, we might just be able to chalk that up to the fact that this song was never meant to have a rap remix. Even so, it’s fun to hear exactly how one would turn out. Do you guys think T.I. did an admirable job on this one?

[Album Review] Robin Thicke – Blurred Lines

’Robin Thicke – Blurred Lines (feat. T.I. & Pharrell)’
’Robin Thicke – Give It 2 U (feat. Kendrick Lamar)’
’Robin Thicke – Top Of The World’

After dropping multiple tracks from his latest full length this past month, R&B crooner Robin Thicke finally unveils his 6th studio album, Blurred Lines. Already seasoned in the music industry, Thicke is considered more of your mother’s favorite singer with his charming and mature sound. On this latest full length however, he teams with some of the top producers in the game and some rising emcees for a mix of 70’s funk, pop, dance, and an attempt at some dubstep and neo-soul.

Returning with a new sound and a controversial video to match, the 2013 Pharrell-produced summer hit-maker, “Blurred Lines”set the tone for the new Thicke on this album. It’s catchy, young, and fresh, but still holds an organic sound that sets it apart from the heavily-synthed music that plagues today’s radio. Adding T.I. for a quick “hip-rap” feature, there was no surprise that this single reached number one status on the charts.

His follow-up, the Dr. Luke-produced single “Give It 2 U” featuring Kendrick Lamar and the Timbaland-produced “Take It Easy On Me” turn the tables to a more dance vibe by adding some subtle dubstep-influences for easy marketable radio-success. “Get In My Way” is a nod to the past, with a 70’s inspired disco sound that comes across as light and effortless, while ‘Feel Good’ is the trance-pop tune that should appeal more to the European markets.
