Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 11]

As more and more talent emerges in 2014, our Sunday Night Soul playlists have gotten increasingly larger. This week’s collection features over 50 unique songs to choose from, all featuring some supremely gifted artists. Some of our favorites this evening include particularly strong entries from newbies to the series like Nick Hakim, Kyan, Esco Williams, Johnny Stimson, Eric Bellinger, Fortune, Tanika and BOY/FRIEND, while other notable selections come from such familiar names as Sango, Jeftuz, Jakwob, BANKS, Sam Smith, Slakah The Beatchild, Mikky Ekko, Danity Kane, and Alicia Keys. That previous sentence doesn’t even remotely represent the immense amount of talent we’re working with tonight, however. The best way to find out for yourself is to press play and dive right in, because you’ve got plenty of swimming to do.

[Smooth Like Honey] Sam Smith – Make It To Me

Sam Smith
Make It To Me

He was just named BBC’s Sound of 2014 and I have to say, not all that surprising.
Mr. Sam Smith has made quite a name for himself since lending his vocals to Disclosure’s ‘Latch’ in 2012. Since that point, Smith has captured the hearts and ears of fans all around the globe with his beautiful silky honey-like voice. Smith released his song ‘Make It To Me,’ a simple song full of sincere love lyrics and piano, with just a hint of drums and violin to capture the power of what Smith is saying. Smith sings of finding that one person who is specifically designed just for him, a story many of us know and hold on to as we search for our “one.” Another picturesque song by the highly talented Smith, who will continue to make 2014 a year he can call his very own.

[Electronic] Sam Smith – Nirvana (Until the Ribbon Breaks Re-Imagination)

SAM SMITH
Nirvana (Until The Ribbon Breaks ReImagination)

Just a few weeks ago we were talking about Sam Smith and his amazing tune “Money on My Mind.” Before that we were talking about “Together,” and “Safe with Me.” Let’s face it, the past year has been incredible for London based musician, and we’ve been talking about it every step of the way.

Today we’re talking about “Nirvana,” which was taken from Sam’s debut EP, released in November. However, this post features a crafty re-imagination of the tune via Until the Ribbon Breaks. Having just released an EP earlier this month (A Taste of Silver), this Welshman has also accompanied his remix with a sultry video.

Gone are the massive tribal drums and understated guitar riffs. In their place we find dialed up keys and smooth, seductive bass hits. Smith’s voice is amazingly sampled, creating a chopped up soundscape that is effortlessly beautiful, seductive and welcoming.

The video below brings a visual interpretation that matches the remix perfectly. Underneath the lush red glow, we’re offered up a scene that is probably NSFW. Take a little bit of caution before you press play on this one.

[NEW] Disclosure – Latch (DJ Premier Remix)

Latch (DJ Premier Remix)

The burst of music released over the holidays has commenced and, of all the tunes under the tree, Disclosure‘s upcoming Settle remix album has us especially excited. Today, after an impressive first glimpse, the UK-based electronic duo let loose the highly anticipated rework of “Latch” by legendary hip-hop producer DJ Premier. While the original is an addicting masterpiece in itself, Premier slows the tempo down and adds a D’Angelo-esque piano melody with steady percussion making for a new-age take on the classic R&B of the 90s. The Settle remix album drops December 17th.

[For The Love] Sam Smith – Money On My Mind

SAM SMITH
Money On My Mind

He does it for the love.

Sam Smith tells us in his latest song ‘Money On My Mind’ that he doesn’t do it for the money. While he isn’t specific about what exactly he doesn’t do, he makes it clear that love is the answer to every question, every reason, and every answer. The wonderful British vocalist captivates with his stunning, blues-like voice and vocals that immediately stick in your mind. And then let’s not forget the intoxicating soft electronic beat, filled with drums and snap sounds, yes those fingers will be snapping. Smith just reminds us that it isn’t money that should be on anyone’s mind, but love, pure and simple and gleaming in all its glory.

[Funky Fresh] Sam Smith, Nile Rodgers, Disclosure & Jimmy Napes – Together

Sam Smith x Nile Rodgers x Disclosure x Jimmy Napes
Together

Could there be a more appropriate title for a track that brings “Together” some of the most creative minds in music? After making a resurgence of his own earlier this year alongside Daft Punk, Nile Rodgers re-unites “Latch” collaborators Sam Smith and Disclosure for this funky new tune. Rounding out the equation is songwriter Jimmy Napes, who presumably crafted the wonderful lyrics on this groovy number for us to vibe out to. The only knock on this song is that at barely over two minutes, it’s way too short. This is apparently the product of a one day studio session between this eclectic group of artists, but let’s hope this is just a taste of what they have in store for us.

[R&B/Pop] Sam Smith – Safe With Me

Sam Smith
Safe With Me

After appearing on some of the year’s biggest records like Disclosure‘s “Latch” and Naughty Boy’s “La La La,” Sam Smith seems poised to take the first steps towards establishing himself as a formidable force on his own. We’ve already heard the melancholic “Lay Me Down,” but “Safe With Me” truly represents the first leap forward for the Londoner. Unlike his first single, Smith’s latest effort is anything but safe, as the crooner spreads his buttery vocals over a vivid, R&B influenced backdrop provided by Two Inch Punch. Sam Smith’s magical voice has proven to be irresistible, and just like every other song he touches, this one requires repeat listening. His debut EP can’t come soon enough.
