[Indie Rock] The 1975 – Milk

The 1975
Milk

It seems like every other week we have a tasty musical treat from Manchester indie rockers The 1975. It also seems like every other week we’re clamoring to get a post up as fast as humanly possilbe. Both are true statements have been entirely true as of late, and if you take a minute to listen, it’s not hard to understand why.

Today we have the band’s newest release, “Milk”. which appears on a split 7″ with The Neighbourhood’s “No Grey” that the bands will be selling on the road during their US dates together. We especially enjoyed this tune because it effectively straddled the border of the two sounds the band excels at. On one hand, they’ve developed an amazing knack for creating catchy poppy songs like “Chocolate” and “Sex”. On the other hand, they also have the amazing ability of creating dreamy, down tempo tracks like “Falling for You.”

“Milk” has lyrics that are easy to sing along to, rhythmic drumming and addicting repetitious guitars, but maintain that shoegazey melodic sound that we’ve all come to love.

fallingforyou

Thank goodness we didn’t have to wait long for the latest offering from Manchester minimal-poppers The 1975 and their forthcoming EP IV which is set to release May 20, with freshly minted single “fallingforyou”.  Last week, we gave you Ninjas the drop on the dreary cut “Haunt // Bed”, and today follows suit with that slow-burning aesthetic spearheaded by Matthew Healy’s longing coo, steeped in a blanket of shoegazey reverb. At the heart of “fallingforyou”, beats a faint, driving synth just audible enough to get your hips swinging while lost in The 1975’s stimulating wave of melancholia. It is a track recalling some of The xx’s earliest and best work, but is also completely unique on its own. It seems with every release The 1975 are becoming more confident in building their sound, and haven’t once missed the mark production wise. Stream “fallingforyou” above and check out their latest North American tour dates in support of The Neighbourhood here.

The City

The 1975 have taken the music scene by storm, on both sides of the pond. This Manchester four piece originally released “The City” as a demo recorded from their bedroom. Since picking up steam in the music industry, they’ve since re-recorded this radio single version of the track that will eventually appear on the Mike Crossey produced album, which is due out later this year.

Driving drums and bass, delicate guitar riffs, and of course the haunting vocals of lead singer Matthew Healy comprise this highly addicting pop track that begs to be sung along with.

Newcomer producer Ryan Hemsworth has had his hands all over 2012 (see: his work with Lianne La Havas and Frank Ocean), but seems intent on finishing the year on a very strong note. Here, he takes The 1975‘s “Sex” rocker, remixing it into a very fluid, shimmery electronic track, while somehow still retaining the original’s powerful feeling of aching emptiness. It’s just…wow.
