This edition was about as eclectic as they come ranging from dreamy indie to tech house slappers. We’ve had some great guests and themed episodes recently, so I really wanted to highlight 5 new albums that I’ve had in heavy rotation for the last few weeks from the supremely laid back funk jam-band Khruangbin, Swedish indie outfit HOLY, weightless pop trio NADINE, LA disco rockers De Lux and emotional dance music extraordinaire Lane 8.

The homie and master beatmaker Causmic dropped by TMN Radio this week to share selections from his debut solo album Wormholes and a few tracks that inspired it. We chopped it up about the galaxy, our mutual love of Flying Lotus and the visual influences behind ‘Wormholes.’ Building off Causmic’s otherworldly originals, we kept the instrumentals going with a wide array of experimental beats and a sprinkle of new hip-hop.

We had a couple firsts on this episode with Brian, half of DJ duo Cosmic Crates, in the studio for a live mixing sesh. Before we got into that that, I opened up playing catch up on some of my favorite new indie rock/pop releases from Jay Som, The Sufis, Frankie Cosmos, Slenderbodies and more. When Brian joins for the second half, we chop it up about the Cosmic Crates project, his experience growing up in Detroit and thoughts on the state of electronic music today. For the final hour, we had a fun live b2b mixing session sharing some deep and hazy house cuts.

Episode #98: Cosmic Amanda & DJ Chad on the Spaceship

On the eve of our Space Disco / BFF.fm Benefit, we were joined by BFF.fm’s founder Cosmic Amanda and the legendary DJ Chad. But before we got into the disco sesh, I kicked off the show with some hazy, spacey cuts from MGMT, Vivian Fantasy, Nabihah Iqbal and Akasha System. Vindata‘s new mixtape was so good that I had to squeeze in a lil sampler (4 songs!) of its soultronic magic. Before sharing some phenomenal disco cuts, Amanda and I chopped it up about BFF history, Victorian submarines and our mutual love of disco. DJ Chad closed the show out with some wiggly space bumps. – Ash

[17 To End ’17] Ninja Ash’s Best of the Year

Listen to the playlist on Spotify // Apple Music.

Nite Jewel‘s Real High, full of lush instrumentation and flawless percussion, is meant for late night listening–“Obsession” captivates with its sensual atmosphere.

Gabriel Garzón-Montanos unique take on soul made for one of the most captivating albums of the year. “Fruitflies” is an earworm of a track that tells a heartbreaking, deeply human story that needed to be heard in 2017.

“Baybee” captures everything I love so much about Jay Som‘s 2017 debut Everybody Works–dreamy, expansive and larger-than-life.

Slowdive‘s first album back in over 2 decades is a transformative masterpiece and “Star Roving” exemplifies its beautiful vastness.

We might be a bit biased since we premiered his first track on TMN Radio earlier this year, but Still Woozy may be the artist I’m most excited for in 2017. “Cooks” displays just how much emotion and soul he pack into a quirky, playful tune.

We had a very rare episode to close out 2017 featuring all my favorite tunes of the year and a special guest appearance from former co-host Ninja Dom, in town from London. I started this playlist with about 12 hours worth of music and ended up focusing on tracks from my favorite albums of the year. To round it all out, I mixed together 11 of my favorite 2017 house tracks. We have some even more comprehensive end of year lists from our staff coming to the website later this week so stay locked. Thanks to everyone and anyone who rocked with Music Ninja Radio in 2017! – Ash
