Cracking The Code: Delving Into Blue Electronica & Understanding The Mystery Behind The Duo [TMN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

When we first introduced them as our resident artists for this month, we challenged you to see if you could crack The Code. That’s proven even more difficult with the release of their Blue Electronica EP, as the genre bending duo have continued to defy expectations since their emergence on the scene two years ago. The minute you think you’ve got them all figured out, the pair manage to throw a curveball your way that completely changes the way you view their music. We sat down with them recently to understand their recording process and the inspiration behind their music. See what they had to say about Blue Electronica, and listen to the entire project below. If you like what you hear, make sure you pre-order the album here.

’The Code – Launch’

TMN: It’s crazy to think that you’ve been able to amass such a large following without anyone learning your identity. These days there’s a lot of pressure for artists to open up and engage their fans via social media, but at the same time there’s been a growing contingent of reclusive artists trying to keep the focus exclusively on their music. Can you guys discuss some of the reasons why you decided to pursue this path, and some of the challenges that come along with it?

The Code: Well just like you said to focus on the music. At this stage nothing else is important. There are challenges in everything, so by choosing whatever path you should prepare and accept them, positive or negative.

’The Code – Electronica’

TMN: Like we said, no one’s quite been able to crack The Code just yet, and we’re interested in learning a bit about the significance behind your name: what does it mean to you and what does it represent?

The Code: It’s more what we are, not who we are. It represents the music, and our visual compass.

’The Code – Loving You (ft. P Reign)’

TMN: You guys have basically created your own signature sound, blending elements of electronica with R&B rhythms and hazy melodies. Can you talk to us a bit about your inspiration and how you came to develop this style?

The Code: Organically. Just creating what makes sense to the mood at the time, whether that be something energetic or chilled. Inspired by everything, not just music. In this day there is so much going on in the world its hard not to be inspired by everything.

’The Code – F**K’

TMN: You recently released your Blue Electronica EP, and the color seems to be a pervasive theme in both your music and artwork. What is it about the color blue that makes it so prominent in your aesthetic?

The Code: Blue is a calming color which can be dark, light, soothing and irate. It can also represent so many different things and the contrast between our interpretation of the color “blue” and “electronica” really fits.

’The Code – Azure’

TMN: In 2014 you introduced yourself to the world with the release of your debut mixtape, 1|11. This last project though, was much smaller in scope. Were there any changes in your approach when it came time to record Blue Electronica?

The Code: Not really, it all comes down to timing, both were made at different times in different moments.

’The Code – Mood (Find You)/Time’

TMN: There’s a lot of exciting talent emerging on the UK music scene lately. It seems like every time we turn our heads we find someone new. Are there any names you guys are keeping your eyes on, or anyone specific you’d like to collaborate with?

The Code: Anyone who wants to make music, any who is positive. If the time is right then anything is possible.

’The Code – Wolf (ft. KasFlow)’

TMN: Now that you have two projects under your belt, what else is on the horizon for The Code? Do you guys plan on doing any touring?

The Code: More of everything. It’s all been absolutely amazing so far.

’The Code – Breath’

TMN: Is there anything you’d like to say to someone who’s just hearing your music for the first time?

The Code: We appreciate your ears.

’The Code – Sedative’

TMN: The biggest misconception people have about the UK is ______

The Code: Not really sure, every area has stigma’s and stereotypes, good and bad.

’The Code – 16th Element’

TMN: If you could teach a robot to feel emotion through music, what album would you show them?

The Code: Daft Punk – Discovery

’The Code – IIIII’

TMN: If your music was a drug, how would it make people feel?

The Code: You’d have to ask the listeners that one.

[NEW] NAO – Fool To Love

NAO
Fool To Love

NAO was certainly one of our favorite artists to emerge from the UK in 2015, and she reminds us why with her new single, “Fool To Love”. The latest offering from the British songstress serves as an empowering break-up anthem, meant for those who’d prefer to move on rather than wallow in sorrow. While NAO might be expressing regrets over her previous relationship, you’re no “Fool To Love” this track. Stream the tune above and look for more from NAO as she prepares for the release of her debut album later this year.

[Resident Artist of the Month] Introducing: The Code

It’s not often that our resident artist is shrouded in such mystery. The Code, however, are used to being the exception by now. Although details are sparse, one thing we can say for certain about the artist-producer duo is that they are systematically working to reinvent R&B. Their music is often a genre-bending blend of sensual vocals, hazy synths and slinky rhythms. After dropping their highly acclaimed debut  1|11 mixtape back in 2014, the UK based group are currently gearing up to release their upcoming Blue Electronica EP later this year. See if you can crack The Code yourself by sampling of some of the songs from the project below, along with a unique remix of Calvin Harris‘ “How Deep Is Your Love”.

[Future] Louis Futon – Wasted On You (feat. ROZES)

Louis Futon
Wasted On You (feat. ROZES)

Louis Futon was unofficially the remix king of 2015, crafting some of our favorite renditions of songs from Gallant, Phony Ppl, G-Eazy, and ODESZA, among others. Returning with his first release of the new year, the gifted producer takes all that he learned from those experiences and teams up with fellow Philadelphia native ROZES to create one of his most impressive original masterpieces to date in “Wasted On You.” Despite the dismissive nature of its lyrics, the sensationally vibrant single is guaranteed to lift your spirits, no matter your mood.

The track is the eighth release through ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective, of which the duo had this to say about the unique collaboration:

We’ve always been a fan of Louis Futon because of his incredible ability to excel in any genre he produces and this track is no exception. With vocals by the very talented ROZES, “Wasted On You” is a euphoric anthem that fuses distorted synths, airy vocals and pulsing percussion work.

Kick your weekend off the right way by streaming the tune above, and if you like it (we know you will), make sure to support the artist and grab a copy from iTunes as well.

[NEW] Kanye West – Real Friends (Feat. Ty Dolla $ign)

Kanye West
REAL FRIENDS & NO MORE PARTIES IN LA (SNIPPET)

Speculation around the status of Kanye West‘s upcoming album, SWISH, has been swirling pretty constantly since the turn of the new year when Yeezy decided to drop his underwhelming Nike dissing, Jumpman-esque single “Facts”. So when Kim Kardashian West teased the prospect of new Kanye music every Friday late last night, it’s safe to say all his fans had a mini freakout. Comparisons were instantly drawn to Ye’s revolutionary “G.O.O.D. Fridays” series back in 2010 which sent the internet into a frenzy leading up to the release of his much herald album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. While last week’s release seemed more like a throwaway teaser, this brand new single from Kanye seems like the real deal. While Kanye has never been known to mince his words, what makes “Real Friends” special is that it seems to come from an honest and vulnerable place, as he struggles to maintain relationships and questions how many genuinely trustworthy individuals he really has in his life. Packaged with the brand new single also comes a snippet for (what we presume to be) next week’s release, titled “No More Parties In L.A.” which is produced by Madlib and includes a feature from Kendrick Lamar. From the sound of it, things are only about to get better from here.

[15 to End 2015] Ninja Baseer’s Best of the Year

When evaluating lists like this, it’s always important to remember the subjectivity in music. The songs here are not just what I would say are the “best” of 2015 or even necessarily my favorites, but the ones I had the most attachment to for one reason or another. Music is the closest thing we have to time travel in that it can evoke emotions unlike any other and effortlessly bring us back to moments long forgotten. This compilations of songs serves almost as a walk through memory lane, and choosing just 15 tracks to represent my 2015 proved to be a daunting task. Alas, I was able to finally narrow down my choices, so I hope you all enjoy my picks even if you don’t fully agree with them (which let’s be honest, you won’t). Finally, if you are curious about what didn’t make the cut, I’m going to shamelessly plug this massive Spotify playlist I compiled that includes pretty much all of my favorites from 2015.

’Kendrick Lamar – These Walls ft. Bilal, Anna Wise, Thundercat’
There’s no question that To Pimp A Butterfly is a classic album, so choosing just one standout single was definitely a challenge, but “These Walls” proves to be equally thought provoking as it is groovy.

’Thundercat – ‘Them Changes”
Speaking of “Them Changes”, Thundercat played an integral part in 2015’s funk revival, with Flying Lotus laying the groundwork for this tune with the Isley Brothers-sampling instrumental.

’Toro Y Moi – Buffalo’
“Buffalo” is just about as fun as it gets when Mr. Chaz Bundick is shredding on the guitar.

’The Internet – Girl ft. KAYTRANADA’

As far as love songs go, we couldn’t ask for more from this hypnotic collaboration between The Internet and Kaytranada.

’Alina Baraz & Galimatias – Can I’
Alina’s mellifluous voice and incisive lyrics combined with Galimatias’s melodic production will captivate your attention from start to finish.

’SG Lewis – No Less Ft Louis Mattrs’
Featuring two of the most remarkable talents I discovered in 2015, “No Less” makes for one of the smoothest listens of the year, accomplished through a superb blend of dulcet vocals and acoustic guitar work.

’Drake – Hotline Bling’
The most meme-worthy tune of the year is also easily one of the most infectious. Shout outs to D.R.A.M.

’Jamie XX, Young Thug & Popcaan – I Know (Good Times)’
The ultimate party anthem of 2015, “Good Times” are undoubtably to be had whenever this genre defying jam comes on.

’Snakehips x Tory Lanez – Dímelo’
One of the more unconventional pairings of the year, Snakehips and Tory Lanez found an incredibly creative middle ground between their drastically different sounds.

’Mura Masa – Firefly (ft. Nao)’
Two of our favorite up-and-comers from the UK, Mura Masa and Nao team up to create one of the catchiest songs we’ve heard in a long time.

’Disclosure – Superego (ft. Nao)’
It’s no mistake that Nao appears twice on this list, as the British songstress lends her vocal talents to yet another addicting tune.

’Skrillex And Diplo – To Ü (Feat. AlunaGeorge)’
Sorry JB, but Aluna Francis wins the award for the best Skrillex and Diplo collaboration of the year.

’Gallant – Weight In Gold (Louis Futon Remix)’
Pro Tip: Gallant’s “Weight In Gold” might have been the most heavily remixed track of the year, but I’ve found no version is more apt for shower acoustics than the Louis Futon remix.

’Beach House – PPP’

Beach House have a gift for crafting music that’s perfect for those times when you need to just close your eyes and drift away deep into your mind’s abyss.

’Tame Impala – Let It Happen’
Just as the title implies, it’s best to submerge yourself in the Currents of this psychedelic tune and let them carry you away on a new journey.

’Shlohmo – BURIED’
Shlohmo’s Dark Red serves as the soundtrack for the most epic space voyage you could ever imagine. Lock yourself in a dark room and let the music take hold.

[NEW] The Weeknd – Low Life (Feat. Future) + Pass Dat (Remix) (Feat. Jeremih)

’Low Life – Future + The Weeknd’
’Pass Dat (The Weeknd Remix) – Jeremih + The Weeknd’

Capping off the biggest year of his career, The Weeknd decided to play the part of Santa Clause tonight and drop off a few Christmas gifts for all his loyal fans in the form of two new singles. The first track, “Low Life”, finds the Canadian crooner teaming up with Future, who’s had a pretty memorable year all his own, while the second is a remix of Jeremih‘s “Pass Dat” off his most recent project, Late Nights: The Album. Both tunes fit right in Abel’s wheelhouse, as his vocals sound right at home on the hazy, trapped out instrumental provided by  Metro Boomin on “Low Life”. On the other hand, we couldn’t have asked for a more natural fit for a remix of Jeremih’s laidback stoner anthem. Stream both tracks above and stay tuned for more from The Weeknd as we head into 2016.
