Music and Technology can be one of the most synergistic marriages to date, and there are a group of people that are trying to expand this concept and bring them to colleges around the world. Named after the most joyful time in our elementary years, the RECESS festival is trying to encapsulate that very excitement of leaving the class room to go out an play, bringing young adults an amazing array of music acts with inspiring members in the tech community.
Recess, the nation’s first college touring music and ideas festival rolls into Michigan State University with Kaskade and Project 46 leading the charge as the major performing artists. Slated for Friday, April 19, 2013 at the Ag Expo – Michigan State University, Lansing, MI – the evening will bring together the latest trends in music, technology, fashion, and art while inspiring and guiding entrepreneurs.
The excitement around our musical ninja dojo couldn’t be more palpable as we just might have found a future prodigy. MURAMASA, whose name derives from the famous Japanese swordsmith Muramasa Sengo, founder of the Muramasa school, is equipped with equally as sharp technical capabilities to create complex musical structures in the world of trap music.
If there is one thing that the dance scene is consistent of, it would undoubtedly be its cyclical nature of grabbing founding principles and taking them over the edge. Dubstep is a clear example, where in the last 2 years creating the most aggressive and weighted basslines produced the best of results. And if you follow its evolution, the post-dubstep era is soon changing from all the unnecessary and uncontrolled “bro-step” elements and rolling back to a more sensible and technical place that echos its very origin.
And this is why we strongly urge everyone to pay attention to this promising 16 year old producer. While he has nothing to do with dubstep (not yet anyways) it is his purified view of what trap music means to him that makes Muramasa a fresh new standalone act. The balanced layers of both bass and harmony, the progressive and controlled nature in his music almost comes out as poetic if it weren’t so BOSS. Trap, once dismissed as just another experimental bass genre, is gaining a lot of popularity and the milestones of its evolution can easily be witnessed by experiencing what Muramasa is bringing to the table.
Muramasa will be releasing a self-titled EP on April 2nd and today we have for you a signature track from the four track complication that serves as a representative to not only the EP as a whole but to his very movement he is creating. “Birdcage Chain” exhibits all the expressive nature of a typical trap single yet it is submerged in simple but substantive technicalities that are like nothing we have heard before. Play a preview of the song below as we all wait for the official release coming next week.
Las Vegas based electronica based duo, Black Boots, has more to offer you than just two sets of shiny black boots. These guys got signed to Ultra in hopes of bringing their substance based EDM to the masses. Normally, this is the part of the post where we talk about how these two came together, but we have something even better for you. If you glance below, you’ll see an exclusive interview awaiting you. So, don’t take our word for how Black Boots was formed, instead read what they had to say about how they came together, who they admire in the scene, and what each of them brings to the table when coming up with new tracks!
TMN: We want to know how this project came about. Tell us how you two met?
It was cosmic coincidence. Universal magnetism.
We were standing at the precipice of chaos in our lives when we randomly crossed paths and became roommates. Spending more time together, we quickly realized our shared artistic and philosophical visions, which eventually led us to form Black Boots. Our bond grew deeper as we explored unconventional ideas, from underground music scenes to unique cultural spaces, and even unconventional markets like the allure of casino zonder licentie platforms that operate beyond traditional boundaries. These experiences inspired the distinct edge that became integral to our creative direction, turning Black Boots into more than just a project—it became a lifestyle driven by freedom and innovation.
TMN: on the single “Flash Of Light,” it seems like you guys really take your time whenever you release a new single. Walk us through the production cycle of every track. What do you think each of you bring to the table when it comes to producing a new sound?
Thank you for the kind words.
We focus all of our energy on writing songs with substance and purpose, and the writing process is a deeply intense experience in which we are taking the physical and emotional climate of our lives and purging that to record. The songs we write carry a very personal message and emotional attachment that we hope will resonate with people and create a genuine connection. We spend countless hours in our creative space revisiting ideas and fine-tuning the instrumentals and vocals because they need to be perfect in our eyes. We are perfectionists.
TMN: If you could only describe your sound in 3 words, what would they be?
Provocative, Flammable, Orgasmic.
TMN: Who in the current EDM scene do you look up to, and who are you most eager to collaborate with?
We have a lot of respect for guys that are doing their own thing and aren’t necessarily subscribing to chasing formulas or trending sounds. Collaborations are such an exciting and essential process of making music. There really is a wealth of information out there and we are certainly eager to learn from other artists. At the moment we have our eye on working with artists like Tommy Trash, Calvin Harris, and Wolfgang Gartner, to name a few, but our doors and minds are always open.
TMN: If your music were a Vegas hotel, which one would it be?
Whichever one is most glamorous on the outside, but dark and seedy on the inside.
TMN: What can we expect for 2013? Will you guys be touring?
Black Boots will be invading the airwaves and marching through many cities in the next year. We have a lot of unreleased material, videos, artwork, and concepts that will be coming your way soon. Hope to see you all out there.
Extending their working relationship one step further, Bassnectar collaborates with LA producer PatrickReza for another compulsively seductive remix. The track “Not Too Late” by Tom Swoon and featuring the vocals of Amba Shepherd has fallen victim to the creative ideas of this synergistic partnership. Bringing in an array of revolving wobbles over a landscape of melodic noise, it is really the continued use of Amba’s vocals that make this track stand out.
The song can be purchased on Beatport Today via Ultra Records
Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are uploading today the Irish sounding single of a few years back, “Irish Celebration” through their Soundcloud and Free to download. The song exposes the history behind the celebration, with an insight look, in full honest and genuine Macklemore style as producer Ryan Lewis provides a strong melodic foundation for his rhymes.
