Future Generations – Stars (PillowTalk Remix) [TMN PREMIERE]

Future Generations
Stars (PillowTalk Remix)

When we premiered “Stars” from New York-based Future Generations, we were already looking forward, past its release, to the inevitable remixes to follow. With a highly engaging piano melody, upbeat percussion, and memorable vocals, we knew that stellar interpretations would be coming down the pike, and we were right.

Just as we did with the original, we’re back with a first look and listen to this stellar flip from San Fran-based PillowTalk. Rife with laidback, summertime vibes, it boasts a groovy-as-hell bassline, island-style percussion, and a playful guitar riff, everything comes together in a perfect addition to your warm-weather playlist.

So, fire up the grill, pick up a sixer of your favorite craft brew, and get ready to jam out.

St. Tropez – Which Side Are You On [TMN PREMIERE]

St. Tropez
Which Side Are You On

Whether you’re slap-drumming your steering wheel as you sit in gridlock traffic, or firing back Jameson shots as you prep for an epic night out on the town, “Which Side Are You On” will provide you with the perfect, grungy accompaniment. It’s a short ride, but, it’s one hell of a ride, none the less.

This might be the first time you’re hearing of Amsterdam-based St. Tropez, which is totally ok. They’re on the come-up, which means you have the rare opportunity to out-hipster your friends this weekend. Just know one thing – even though they bear the same name as the beachy, Provincial French beach town, their tunes certainly aren’t for unwinding with a nice bottle of rosé as you watch the waves roll in. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

“Which Side Are You On” is a beautiful blend of multiple decades, including catchy-as-hell, anthemic punk from the 80’s, and crunchy, guitar-centric alt-rock from current acts like Tame Impala or Eagles of Death Metal. Complete with an inviting opening riff, powerful chords, a wicked solo, and a sing-along chorus, it should have you chanting along after one spin through. Just remember one thing – try to keep the singing to a dull whisper until you’re in a safe space to start belting it out.

If you happen to be one of our European readers, we highly recommend catching them at The Shacklewell Arms in London, on August 24th, or at OT301 in Amsterdam on August 26th. If you’re anywhere else in the world, well, you’re going to have to wait a while, just like us.

[Folk] Henry Jamison – Real Peach

Henry Jamison
Real Peach

Burlington-based Henry Jamison has us really tied up. At times, he calls on associations of classic storytellers like Bob Dylan or Johnny Cash. Other times, he reminds us of endearing country songs that blare out of rickety bar speakers at any number of dusty dive bars across the contiguous United States. Regardless of what box we try to put him in, we know one thing for certain. There have been tens of thousands of people with great voices behind an acoustic guitar, a few plucks from a banjo, and a soft kick drum. Not all of them can keep your attention past a few minutes. But, Henry? He’ll stay with you long after this song ends.

“Real Peach” has a warm, comfortable feeling. Lyrically, it’s a song that you can’t help but give in to, even if you’re not the “sing-along” type. We most certainly are, so we quickly found ourselves murmuring the chorus through a beaming grin.

Cuz my baby she’s a real peach
even when the night come crashin’ down
real peach
and the nighttime rolls away, alright
and we’re comin’ back to the demon-killing work of love
(my god)

Getaway Dogs – Lost in the Ebb [TMN ALBUM PREMIERE]

Santa-Cruz based Getaway Dogs will soon be adding a much-needed spark to the closing of the few, fleeting, warm weather weeks that lie ahead. Luckily for you, you won’t have to wait until Friday to drink in this collection of indie folk beauties. Why’s that? You guessed it. We have a sneak preview of the entire album for you, right now.

If you’re not familiar with this Bay Area 6-piece just yet, don’t fret. Lost in the Ebb is their debut album, which means you’re coming in at the perfect time to get acquainted with founder Kai Killion, and the other brilliant puzzle pieces that make up this act, including Sam Stone, Mikey Whalen, Andrew Dreher, Lucas Heinel and Elliott Kay.

This 15-track body of work is purely intoxicating, leaving you with a dizzying smile and slowly creeping warm-n-fuzzies. Somehow, it feels like the track was written, practiced and recorded in an extremely natural setting, infusing atmospheric nuances throughout the entire listening experience. Take the lead single, for example. “Indonesia” has a glow that radiates with organic vibrations, instantly transporting you away from the hustle of the city, and into the great, wide open wilderness.

“Wild Guess” is another one of our favorites, boasting calculated acoustic guitar picking intertwined with psychedelic electric guitar chords. The playful back-and-forth vocal exchanges give an endearing feeling, one that sticks with you long after the song wraps up.

In all honesty, we could go on, and on about each and every track in Lost in the Ebb. We mean that. This is truly a “press play and walk away” album. Between the articulate finger-picking, nods to mother nature, enchanting vocals, and infectious indie folk structure, we’re pretty sure you’ll think so too.
