Grumpus – Weakdays [TMN PREMIERE]

Grumpus
Weakdays

Looking at the foreboding winter months quickly approaching on our calendars can be easy to do, especially considering that we’re already nearly halfway through August. Yet, we still have a few solid weekends that could be filled with plenty of warm-weather adventures, and Massachusetts-born, Oakland-based Grumpus has another addition to those accompanying playlists.

Dropping on his upcoming album, Sequestrian, “Weakdays” highlights the endearing indie pop qualities you’ll come to know and love from this budding young artist. Set to the backdrop of lazy strumming, the tune is defined by the unique and addictive vocal tone and lasting lyrics from solo member Graham Stevenson. It’ll squeeze perfectly in between both uplifting indie rock tracks and calming folk tunes, coming together in perfect harmony for that last road trip, camping excursion, or laid-back night on your back porch.

Make sure to follow Grumpus on Facebook to keep up to date with his upcoming releases and live shows.

Sloes – Young [TMN PREMIERE]

Sloes
Young

Sometimes it takes a little added inspiration to craft something truly worthwhile. It could come from reading a completely engrossing book, feverishly turning page after page as the clock seemingly ticks at an alarming pace. It could come from an epic adventure somewhere far, far across the globe, giving you that much-needed perspective that you had previously lacked. For London-based five-piece Sloes, it was the latter, and what resulted after was something you’ll want to be a part of.

This quintet originally started as a duo, with members Jerome and Jo songwriting as they traveled through Columbia. From there, piece-by-piece, others joined in, including Paul, Luke, and Katie–Jo’s little sister. Today’s premiere, “Young,” showcases the breadth of their collective talents.

Vocally, Jerome’s powerful tone and cadence instantly hooks you in. Things only grow more enveloping, as Katie comes in on accentuating harmonies, giving a glowing counter balance. The structure is intelligently crafted, harnessing elements of classic folk strings, clean guitar work, and rolling hi-hat hits that maintain a highly engaging energy throughout.

This is more than likely the first time you’re hearing about this act, but we can assure you it won’t be the last. Make sure to follow them on Facebook to keep up with future shows, releases, and general musings.

LIVE DATES:
Jul 31st, Sidmouth Fringe Sessions, Devon
Aug 3rd, BBC London Introducing Sessions at The Scoop, Southbank
Aug 27th, Stroud Fringe, Gloucestershire
Aug 30th, Old Street Records, London

Kid Bloom – Lately It Feels Alright [TMN PREMIERE]

Kid Bloom
Lately It Feels Alright

California five-piece Kid Bloom certainly knows how to pull on my 90s music-loving heart strings. Maybe it’s the casual vocal cadence that beckons back on acts like Beck or Cake. Maybe it’s the crunchy power chords that give me joyful flashbacks to start-to-finish listening sessions Weezer’s Blue album. Yet, as much as we hear influences from that era, we also catch plenty of modern vibes from some of their techniques, which call on associations of one of our personal favorites, Tame Impala. Either way, elements from both decades are coming together seamlessly, leaving us grinning ear-to-ear.

“Lately It Feels Alright” is the third single from their debut EP, A Different State of Mind, following up the release of the title track, and “Electric U.” Guitar driven in nature, it presents a wonderful collection of both psychedelic riffs and foot-tapping, distorted chords. Those dueling styles provide the perfect backdrop for the nonchalant vocal style, giving way to an immensely enjoyable 3-minute ride.

If you happen to be in the SoCal area this Friday, we highly recommend heading to the Soda Bar in San Diego to catch their opening set for T.O.L.D. If you’re anywhere else in the world, just make sure to follow these cats on Facebook to keep tabs on upcoming news.

Next Up in TMN Residency: Benny Benassi

Benny Paradise Press Shot

Our Artist Residency program is one of our most prized possessions. Every month, we get to shine a spotlight on one of our favorite artists, showcasing them through a string of exclusive pieces. We try to rotate from month-to-month, as well, giving you a taste of both legendary and unknown artists. Well, this month falls under the former, as we welcome in long-time dance music icon Benny Benassi.

For us, our infatuation began early in Benny’s career. In fact, we were in attendance at his very first appearance in Denver at The Church Nightclub. The anticipation for this show was overwhelming, partly because Denver didn’t have the bustling music scene that it does now, especially when it came to dance music. The other reason was, of course, due to the tremendous success his global smash hit “Satisfaction,” from his debut album Hypnotica. The show was one that has stuck with us to this very day.

After that memorable tour, Benny continued his storied career, playing festivals like Coachella, EDC, Beyond Wonderland, and so many more, in addition to releasing two more albums, Phobia and Rock N Rave. As if the millions of adoring fans, and a stellar collection of originals and remixes wasn’t enough to solidify his legacy, he also added a Grammy to the list in 2008 for his remix of Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noise.”

2011 brought another strong pillar to his resume, as the world became enamored with the release of “Cinema” which dropped on his fourth album, Electroman. Subsequently, a young, quickly rising producer by the name of Skrillex got his hands on it, and both his remix, and the original were cemented in dance music history. Following that, the hits continued to come through collaborations with Chris Brown on “Beautiful People,” and John Legend on “Dance The Pain Away.”

With the recent release of his fifth album earlier this month with Ultra Records, we figured it would be a perfect time to rope him in to be our Resident Artist for the next few weeks. Stay tuned for some exclusive content from one of the industry’s best and brightest.
