In Memory of Viola Beach

The past few months have been nothing short of devastating for music lovers around the globe. From the attacks at the Bataclan back in November to losing legends like Bowie, Lemmy, Glen Frey, and Maurice White, it seems that we’re in a strange section of time where this art form is suffering from loss after loss at an alarming rate.

As you’re already aware, we hadn’t posted anything about any of those losses, as it’s not something we typically do. We don’t write about industry news, choosing to embrace new music that intrigues and excites us. Our hope is simple – we want to continue that life-long infatuation with music, and we do so through sharing our discoveries with you.

Today, we’re stepping outside our norm. Or, rather, I am.

Last August, I was introduced to a sensational new act and their debut single, “Swings and Waterslides.” It came to us from a PR firm that always brings sensational new artists our way, so it already had an alluring glow about it.

I know The Music Ninja are big fans of Lisbon and this band are very similar; it’s the debut single from Warrington indie pop four-piece Viola Beach called ‘Swings and Waterslides’. – Supercat PR 8/18

The song instantly latched on with its playful guitar work, catchy hooks, and summery, feel-good vibes. I immediately accepted the offer, becoming the online premiere partner for the debut song from Viola Beach. From there, the song played over and over again at TMN HQ, so much so that I listed it as one of our favorite songs from 2015. Keep in mind, I could only choose 15 songs, so you can start to get the idea of how influenced I was by just a single track from this budding young band.

We kept in touch with the band’s publicist and manager closely, covering both of their next songs, “Cherry Vitmo” and “Boys That Sing.” With each release, we could feel the band picking up momentum, showcasing a next-level amount of talent that was set to cross over into the US by way of SXSW.

This last weekend, things took a tragic, heart-wrenching, and deeply saddening turn. Members Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin and manager Craig Tarry passed away after a car accident in Sweden. The news came to us on a comment on our premiere, as fans scoured the internet, leaving their condolences wherever they could.

To say the least, we all were deeply affected by this. As bloggers, we feel a direct connection with the artists we write about, especially when they’re just emerging onto the scene. In a way, it feels like you’re a part of their team, quietly cheering them on from behind a glowing laptop screen. While we had never met in person, nor had spoken on the phone, there’s still this lingering feeling. In all honesty, it’s one of the reasons why we all keep doing this. It’s our tie to the bands we love and the industry we cherish.

All five of these young men had a tremendous career in front of them, boasting both the swagger and polish of a well-seasoned act. You only need a few listens through their handful of releases to know that their gift was cut far too short, leaving the world with a sizeable hole in its music-loving heart.

We highly encourage you to dive in and celebrate their music in whatever medium you’d like, whether it be here, on Soundcloud, Spotify, or iTunes. If you’d like to take your support to the next level, you can purchase Swings & Waterslides and help move them up the popular chart. Each purchase brings them closer to a #1 spot, introducing more and more people to the music they worked so hard on, and were so passionate about.

Until we see you on the other side, thank you for your contributions Kris, River, Tomas, Jack and Craig. We’ll cherish these songs dearly, holding the joy they bring us close to our hearts each and every time we listen.

Each day has an interesting mix, ranging from legendary acts like Tiesto, Sean Paul, and Bassnectar, all the way down to up-and-coming TMN favorites like Bit Funk, as well as a strong selection of locals.

Aside from a warm, sandy beach, and some top-tier, all-day talent, the festival is also encouraging guests to check out more of what Jamaica has to offer. They’ve actually teamed up with the tourist board to curate an extremely memorable Spring Break/Festival experience. One quick look through their website highlights a bevy of excursions, from visiting legendary waterfalls, to taking a swim with the dolphins.

Private Island – Drugs [TMN PREMIERE]

Private Island
Drugs

There’s an air surrounding “Drugs” that carries a nonchalant level of cool, casually not giving a fuck by who’s impressed or who’s not. Although, we can’t imagine many fall into the latter category. Just take a moment to drink it in. There’s an undeniable swagger to it, almost like it belongs in the opening credits of a sexy crime thriller, rife with scantily clad women surrounding an infinity pool that overlooks the twinkling lights of the Hollywood Hills.

Yes, SoCal-based Private Island certainly can tell a story with their music, both instrumentally and vocally. After seeing some impressive success with their last release, it’s not hard to understand why more and more indie music, blogosphere hunting music lovers are turning a keen ear over to this impressive six piece, embracing their vivid abilities.

Today’s premiere is simply encapsulating, brought to life by resonant percussion, sensual guitar riffs, and a groovy bassline. Laying on top of those are lyrics that leave you wanting more, frantically looking for the repeat button again and again.

Appropriately named, this tune, which drops on their EP in a few weeks, will demand your attention time and time again. Go ahead and give into the temptation. You won’t be disappointed.

[Indie] Alfred Hall – Safe & Sound (Radio Mix)

Alfred Hall Music
Safe & Sound (2016 Radio Mix)

As soon as the calendar flips over to the new year, we’re anxiously awaiting tracks that will encapsulate the masses throughout the year. They may be those legendary festival-worthy dance tracks that get our feet and hips itching for a shot at the dance floor. They may be those memorable indie tunes that give us inescapable lyrics that cross our lips for the duration of the year, and beyond. “Safe and Sound” falls somewhere in the middle, giving listeners a reason to kick back, or boogie, all while dreaming of sunny days, grassy fields, and the enveloping music that’s right around the bend.

Hailing from Norway, Alfred Hall is made up of Hans Tomas, an engineering undergrad, and Bjørn Tveit, a medical student. After deciding to form the band in the summer of ’09, they’ve since grabbed the attention of A&Rs, signed to Sony Norway, received a nomination for Scandanavia’s Best Music Video, and a nomination for Best Pop Album at the Norweigan Grammys. Now, they’re ready to take on the rest of the world, and this tune is going to lead them there.

“Safe & Sound” is simply radiant, lifting listeners up with a warming sense of wonderment. Set to the luscious backdrop of beachy drums, playful guitars, and whimsical whistling, it casually latches on, demanding you to bear a toothy grin, shake your hips, and sing along. Speaking of singing along, it won’t take you long to catch on. We’re a few listens through, and we’re already belting out each lyric, line by line.

Per usual, we’re going to highly recommend you like these guys on Facebook today. Aside from being in the know when their EP drops on March 26th, you’ll also be able to one-up your friends when they eventually catch onto them.

Flora Cash – For Someone [TMN PREMIERE]

Flora Cash
For Someone (radio Edit)

There’s something about the frigid temperatures, piling snow drifts, and the swiftly darkening days that bear a special bond with folk music. Maybe it’s the introspective nature that’s so often associated with this time-tested genre. Maybe it’s the fact that so many of us spend the winter months more so in isolation than in connective socialization. Whatever it is, we often find ourselves throwing on some gloomy folk, bundling up with a blanket, some whiskey, and a good book during the not-so-sunny months.

Swedish husband and wife folk duo Flora Cash certainly have added another piece to our weather-induced introversion with “For Someone.” Within only a moment’s time, this tune draws you in with its haunting beauty like Alice is drawn to the circling plumes of curling smoke from the Caterpillar. Part of that allure comes from the delightfully dreary guitar strumming, which provides an approachable backdrop for the enchanting alternating vocals from Cole Randall and Shpresa Lleshaj.

Their debut record, Can Summer Love Last Forever? is due out in March. Coincidentally, that’s a question so many of us will ask come then. Until Summer comes, you can find us nose down in a Kindle, with Flora Cash radiating through our speakers.

It may come as a surprise that after five years as a music blogger, I still have a concert bucket list.
