[Indie] TRUDY – Baby I’m Blue

TRUDY
Baby I'm Blue

As a former hopeless romantic, it’s understandable why “Baby I’m Blue” instantly latched itself onto those long-lost memories of pining, wishing, and hoping that a special someone would come along for good. Luckily, they did, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still look back on those memories, with Trudy providing the soundtrack.

If you haven’t caught onto this Liverpool/Leeds-based act yet, it’s about time you did. Combining elements of doo-wop, 60’s girls groups, The Beach Boys, and The Strokes, their style has a nostalgic air about it, yet is perfectly suited to please the ears of discerning blogosphere hunters across the globe. “Baby I’m Blue” effortlessly encapsulates those aforementioned elements, offering sometimes smooth, sometimes raucous guitar, fluttering, emotional vocals, and a chorus worthy of a few too many glasses of whiskey.

This tune follows “Behave” and “All My Love,” both of which you can find on their SoundCloud page. We highly recommend heading over and checking it out.

[Fresh] RJD2 – Peace Of What

Peace Of What

If you’re excited that we’re sharing a brand new RJD2 tune, you should probably sit down before continuing onto the next sentence. Not only are you getting an early listen to “Peace of What,” but it also happens to be the lead single from his upcoming sixth album, which drops on March 25th. We know. We’re pretty amped about this too. There’s more though – he’ll be promoting this album with a robust 2016 tour. Now that you’ve let that all sink in, let’s talk about the task at hand.

“Peace of What” is a soulful gem, boasting nostalgic, 90s rap influenced vocals from Jordan Brown. They’re artfully embraced by an array of instruments, including pronounced guitar work, playful percussion, piano, brass, and strings, all expertly crafted into a memorable three and a half minute experience. It’s instantly iconic, adding itself into the ranks of tracks we’ve come to adore from this Ohio-born musician.

The rest of Dame Fortune promises to boast plenty of soul influences, a lot of which came from his stint in Philly.

Living in Philly provided a context for a lot of soul music that I had liked. I didn’t have any cultural context for this music that I liked—it was just music that I had stumbled across as a beat making nerd. Philly was a place where there were enough people who had the same musical vocabulary that I did, which made the music more than something I had just discovered on my own.

If you want to be in the know with more early releases, tour info, and the like, make sure to follow RJD2 on Facebook.

[Deep House] Rüfüs – Like An Animal (LCAW Remix)

Rüfüs
Like An Animal (LCAW Remix)

Over the lengthy holiday break, the music industry seems to come to a screeching halt, which means we tend to relax a bit too. However, while the email submissions, tweets, and IMs across multiple platforms seemingly slow down, artists are still out there releasing some great tracks. LCAW was one of those artists, and his remix of “Like An Animal” was one of those tracks.

Putting a deep house spin on the playful and uplifting original tune from Rüfüs, LCAW pays an artful homage to the original and its extremely iconic vocals, while still maintaining his own signature style. Hard hitting kicks, articulately crafted vocal and instrumental samples, and a groovy bassline all come together in perfect harmony, leading the listener down a dance-inducing journey that will leave them nodding their heads and shuffling their hips.

Make sure to save this one for your weekend playlists. It’s fitting for both your pre and post-party listening sessions, especially if the latter finds you with a romantic interest.

VenessaMichaels talks #2090, Dream Collabs, and Rug Rats [TMN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

Just a few weeks back, when the calendar still showed 2015, we had the ultimate pleasure of catching VenessaMichaels‘ live set at Vinyl Nightclub. After her playful, inventive, and oft-bass heavy showcase, we sat down with her in the green room to talk about everything from how she became a musician, to some of her dream collaborations.

TMN: Hey Venessa! Thank you so much for sitting down with us tonight, and for being our last Resident Artist for 2015. Also, welcome to the Mile High City! Is this your first time playing here?

VM: Thanks! It’s my first time in Denver, in general, and I’ve heard a lot of great things. I love it here! Good people.

TMN: We just premiered your latest remix, which is an amazing interpretation of “Are You That Somebody. How did you land on that song as your next project?

’Are You That Somebody’
VM: Well, I’m a 90’s kid at heart, and it’s definitely inspired my music in general. Honestly? It’s a classic, just like “Say My Name.” I don’t think you can know anything about the 90’s without knowing about Aaliyah and Timbaland and “Are That You Somebody?” It’s just the truth.

TMN: For our readers who don’t know what you’re #2090 style means, can you fill them in a little bit?

VM: #2090 is basically my interpretation of this future 90’s style. I’ve taken a lot of influence by nature. I’ve genuinely become influenced by the 90’s just by growing up with that kind of music. The remixes are a good example of what #2090 is, but my originals and the artists I’m working with were written with a 90’s style topline, but with a new sound underlying it.

TMN: Even looking past your two latest 90’s remixes, we can hear that style carried throughout your other tracks as well, including “Whatcha On.” We heard that everything just kind of fell into place with that track, which is incredible because the production and vocals seemed like they were made for each other, stylistically. Care to elaborate on how that all went down?

[15 to End 2015] Ninja Clayton’s Best of the Year

Even though I’ve been writing for TMN over the past five years, I certainly don’t expect any of you to have me or my musical tastes pegged. In fact, I’d much rather you see this site as a whole, enjoying the eclectic blend that all the ninjas bring to the table. But, if you have paid attention, you’ll know that I love nothing more than hunting through submissions, SoundCloud, BandCamp, tweets, and smoke signals to try and find the best and brightest emerging artists.

2015 brought a few new acts to the scene that I simply couldn’t get enough of, a few of which made it into this year-end playlist. In addition to those, my musical world was blessed with albums from artists who haven’t released something in quite some time, including one band that surfaced after a six-year hiatus.

My 15 favorite tracks are listed below in no particular order because that would be painfully difficult and time-consuming. Instead, I’ve compiled them in a way that should provide you with an enjoyable listening experience, start to finish. If you’re unfamiliar with any of them, I’ve included a one-sentence description that should help highlight what to expect.

’Patrick Watson – Places You Will Go’

Patrick Watson continues to further the question that he could be an alien sent to mesmorize the human race.

’Mew – Satellites (Edit)’

Mew is finally back, in full form, and it’s magnificent.

’Day Wave – Drag’

This new act took the blogosphere by storm, myself included.

’James Vincent McMorrow – How To Waste A Moment’

Upbeat number with from the golden-voiced singer/songwriter, who also became one of my favorite live acts to watch in 2015.

’Still Parade – 07:41’

A little 70’s funk and pop mixed in with gorgeous vocals landed this newly released track into my best of 2015.

’Viola Beach – Swings & Waterslides’

This new act put out a track that’s ideal for a raucous night out, an adventurous road trip, or your next backyard BBQ.

’The Watermelons – Best Of You’

One listen to this catchy-as-hell song will have you singing along with ease.

’The Score – Oh My Love’

These guys will soon be heard across radio stations, shopping malls, commercials, and major motion pictures with their extremely infectious pop.

’JR JR – Gone’

Perfect tune for a montage of you and your special someone frolicking through a field.

’Jack Garratt – Breathe Life (Radio Edit)’

This memorable track displays what we love most about Mr. Garratt – the unknown.

’The Hunna – Bonfire’

Catchy Brit-Pop that will be coming to a stadium or festival mainstage near you in late 2016/2017.

’Drenge – We Can Do What We Want’

If you ever feeling like a drunken episode of lawlessness, put this on.

’Gallant – Talking In Your Sleep’

Sexy, seductive, and alluring, this tune sticks with you longer than unwanted relatives.

’Bobby Nourmand – The Sound’

A combination of haunting deep house, a timeless movie, and iconic vocals.

’Bon Voyage – Booshie’

Sometimes I like to party, and this song is the cause for most of those times.
