Flux Pavilion and Matthew Koma – Emotional (G Buck Remix Feat. OnCue) [TMN PREMIERE]

Flux Pavilion and Matthew Koma
Emotional (G-Buck Remix feat. OnCue)

Just a few days ago, we brought you an exclusive interview with our Resident Artist of the Month – the legendary Flux Pavilion. Early on in that interview, we brought up one of our favorite songs from his recently released album. Which one, you ask? “Emotional,” which features vocals from dance music journeyman Matthew Koma.

Originally sporting a tasty future bass styling, today’s premiere brings an entirely new persona via Philly-based DJ/producer G Buck. Roping in some additional vocals from Brooklyn resident OnCue, the two have crafted a tune that not only pays an artful homage to the original, but also to Flux’s iconic sound as well.

Alongside well-crafted samples of Koma’s original lyrics and the added vocal flair from OnCue, this remix also boasts some impressive percussion work, a head-banging bassline, and memorable, razor-sharp synths. All of those elements culminate effortlessly, providing listeners with something that’s both cooler than the other side of the pillow and perfectly aggressive for any upcoming late-night endeavors.

Aaliyah – Are You That Somebody (VenessaMichaels Remix) [TMN PREMIERE]

#2090
Are You That Somebody

Once again, we find ourselves simultaneously feeling older than we rightfully should, while also relishing in the nostalgia that comes with hearing one of the most iconic songs from our high school years. Once again, it’s at the hands of decade-blending Producer/DJ VenessaMichaels. And, once again, we’re grinning ear-to-ear as we take in her latest interpretation of a 90’s dance tune.

The affectionately coined style of #2090 is just as it seems – a perfect illustration of this artist’s love of the 90’s and dance music of today. Her latest effort is a delicious, dancy, future bass interpretation of the Grammy-nominated “Are You That Somebody,” from Aaliyah. Amidst the well placed clicks, pops, and drips, we find surging synths, and artfully-crafted vocal samples from Aaliyah, Timbaland, and that unforgettable cooing baby from Perrey and Kingsley’s 1966 hit “Countdown at 6.” The combination is something that comes together effortlessly, as if elements from these two decades were made for each other.

Aside from those warm-n-fuzzies from the past, and the TMN HQ dance party we’re currently engaged in, we’re excited about this premiere for another reason – we’d bringing in VenessaMichaels as our next Resident Artist of the Month. She’ll be following up Flux Pavilion, and helping us ring in the new year with some exclusive content.

Flux Pavilion discusses Tesla, The Continued Success of “I Can’t Stop,” and Balvenie 15 Year Single Barrel

Continuing along in our monthlong highlight of this legendary producer, we’ve finally arrived on the portion that we’ve been looking forward to the most – an exclusive interview with Mr. Flux Pavilion himself. As we’re sure you’re just as excited as we are, we’ll let you dive right in.

TMN: Hey, Flux! Thank you so much for being our Resident Artist of the Month. In all honesty, it’s kind of difficult to figure out where to start, given everything that you’ve accomplished through the years. But, why don’t we kick it off with Tesla, which just dropped a few months ago. The album somewhat reminded us of hip hop albums in the late 90s/early 2000s, in the sense that you had a collaborator on almost every track. How did you go about selecting them?

FP: Firstly, thanks for making me Artist of the month! I think in this day and age, there is so much speed and movement when it comes to how we consume music, and as artists, we gotta stay on top of things. When I write, I tend to just keep writing as long as I have ideas, which also include sessions and collaborations. Then, the best stuff I work on turns into a project, in this instance, Tesla, is the best of what I have been working on for the past year.

TMN: One of our favorites on the album was definitely “Emotional,” which features the seasoned Matthew Koma. We couldn’t help but notice some future bass elements in there. Is this a world you’re going to delve into more?

FP: I’m just in the world of making music. I don’t really see music that way.

’Flux Pavilion and Matthew Koma – Emotional’

TMN: Following up on that, there are many different influences throughout the whole album. We hear some reggae in “International Anthem,” some 80’s hip hop in “We Are Creators,” and trap in “Who Wants to Rock.” Do you approach the album as a whole, wanting to include some of each, or do those tracks just naturally come up?

Pillar Point – Dove [TMN PREMIERE]

Pillar Point
Dove

In a split second, “Dove” immediately marches through your ears, into your brain, releasing that oh-so-coveted, smile-inducing, music-generated dopamine. Pulling elements from multiple genres, this incredibly attractive single from Seattle-based Pillar Point, is overwhelmingly memorable, encouraging listeners to sing along after only a few plays through. The combination of well-placed percussion, repeating violin sample, and groovy bassline all come together to support the vocals, calling on fond associations of some of the upbeat tracks Phoenix put out in years past.

“Dove” can be found on their upcoming LP, Marble Mouth, which drops on January 22nd, via Polyvinyl. Aside from the solo member Scott Reitherman, there’s also a handful of collaborators that might ring a bell, including drummer Cameron Gardner (Washed Out), Kevin Barnes (of Montreal) and percussionist Philip Mayer (Kishi Bashi).

We highly recommend marking your calendar for this sophomore release, which promises to have plenty dance-inspired tracks throughout.

[Music Video] Pegboard Nerds – Emoji

Pegboard Nerds
Emoji VIP

Today’s a huge day for Pegboard Nerds‘ fans across the globe. Even though Black Friday and Cyber Monday are well behind us, this Scandanavian duo is apparently still in the giving spirit, offering up both a new song releases and a new music video, all in the same day.

Following up Pink Cloud EP, which has raised an eye-opening $35,000 for Fuck Cancer, “Emoji” falls into line with what the fans have come to know and love. It’s playful, yet doesn’t ease up through the drops, providing plenty of authentic, razor-sharp synths, and heavy bass. And, as we mentioned before, Alex and Michael paired up today’s release with a music video directed by Patrick Jean, who’s short film “Pixels,” spawned the Hollywood blockbuster starring Adam Sandler.

As you’re already aware, we typically don’t post music videos, but this is well-deserved. The creative take on an aspect of pop culture that’s seemingly everywhere not only matches with their lighthearted personalities but also carries the story of “Emoji” quite perfectly.

After you watch, head over to our friends at Cadence & Cause for your chance to win a pair of limited edition Pink Cloud V-Moda headphones, a signed Pink Cloud poster, or a Google Hangout sesh with the Nerds. The proceeds go directly to providing women with cancer detection, prevention, and emotional support.

Jesse Ruben – This Is Why I Need You [TMN PREMIERE]

Jesse Ruben
This Is Why I Need You

Even if it’s only for a few brief minutes, there are a lot of people who are in need of some sort of positive embrace. 2015 has been an intense year, highlighted by a confounding amount of violence, division, and grief. Even beyond the stories that endlessly scroll through our feeds on a nearly daily basis, each and every person is battling their own wars, whether it be with finances, relationships, or health issues. Those who are struggling financially can turn it around with solutions like trade fx on VT markets in France.

We can only assume that Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Jesse Ruben felt the heft of a collection of those issues, both for humanity as a whole and at an introspective level. The end result was today’s premiere, “This Is Why I Need You.” Uplifting in nature, this song is welcomed in by calming acoustic guitar work, and encapsulating atmospheric elements, both providing the perfect musical backdrop for Ruben’s soothing vocals and inspiring message.

‘This Is Why I Need You’ is about a lot of things. It’s about how big and scary the world can be. It’s about growing up and trying to figure out how to deal with new things. It’s about gratitude, and the people who help you get through the stuff that feels impossible. But for me it is more than that. It is a reminder that I’m still a songwriter.

If you’re enjoying Jesse Ruben’s work, make sure to follow him on SoundCloud to keep up with all of his new releases.
