[Electronic/Hip-Hop] THEY. – Nü Religion EP

As the work week slowly winds its way down, we’re fully aware that you’re on the hunt for solid tunes to carry you into two days of pure, unadulterated freedom. Luckily for you, THEY. just dropped their debut EP via Mind of a Genius, and it’s rife with heavy bass hits, lush vocals, and inventive verses.

If this is the first time you’ve heard of this act, we’ll fill you in on their background. THEY. are Drew and Dante. The two were introduced in LA through a mutual acquaintance. Dante was dialing up beats with the ever-so-popular, and oft mysterious producer ZHU, and Drew had just relocated from Maryland. Together, both are influenced by a wide variety of acts like Taking Back Sunday, Nirvana, Babyface, and New Edition, all of which culminate in an unique, and highly addictive listening experience.

Three tracks are highlighted in their Nü Religion EP, which can all be found below. Our favorite out of the trio is “Motley Crue,” which may or may not be due to our secret love for songs like “Kickstart My Heart” and “Shout at the Devil.” Whether or not the title was a subtle nod to Vince Neil and the rest of those cats, it still caught our ear and won’t let go. The dark and understated guitar lick would certainly indicate a connection to some hard rock roots, but we’re pretty sure the title is referring to the lyrics. Regardless, the combination of huge 808 hits, clean snares, and layered vocal samples all culminate into the perfect song to crank up on your ride home from work.

So, make sure you have your shades ready. Roll the windows down. Press play and don’t forget to turn this shit up.

[TMN RESIDENCY] Introducing Our Next Resident Artist: Galimatias

For so many of us, October signifies the changing of the seasons. As we usher in chilly weather, multi-colored foliage, good books, and hearty, home-cooked meals, we’re always looking to gleefully embrace music that matches those impending changes. Switching it up from the sun-soaked festival anthems and catchy-as-hell indie pop chart toppers, we can’t help but be drawn to tunes that are a little slower, a little more mysterious, and a little more relaxing to flood our airways.

As we welcome in all of the above, we’re also welcoming in a brand new resident artist, and one who has a style that’s perfect for slowing down, and taking life in, minute-by-minute, moment-by-moment.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, we’re, of course, talking about Danish artist Galimatias. Most of you should be familiar with his work by now, especially the stunning pieces composed with Alina Baraz. He flawlessly incorporates a wide array of genres, seamlessly fusing together elements of R&B, reggae, and soul, amongst others. All of those neatly combined influences shine brightly in the most recent EP, Urban Flora, which boasts eight sultry, seductive, and highly addictive songs. If at this point, you’re wondering what exactly that experience entails, please press play below. We’ve made it easy on you by including the entire collection, plus a few of our other favorites. Be warned, though, it might incite the need for some top shelf booze and quality time with your significant other. It always does for us, at least.

One thing that fans and bloggers haven’t seen much with this now Los Angeles-based musician is his personal side. His facebook is bare, showcasing only a few select photos. Interviews with him are hard to come by, as well, with only a few select publications getting the opportunity to dig a little bit deeper into the man behind the music.

For all these reasons, we couldn’t be more pleased to bring on Galimatias as our Resident Artist for the next month. We’ll be bringing you an in-depth interview, some exclusive music, and a few other surprises as well. Make sure to stay tuned all month long.

[Indie Rock] The Hunna – Bonfire/She’s Casual

It seems to happen when we least expect it. We spend hours sifting through music in dozens of different avenues, from SoundCloud, to email submissions, to random tweets from artists, and so on. We find tunes that we enjoy on a daily basis, casually putting them in our list for possible posts to happen in the following week. Every once in a while, though, maybe twice a year, we come across something that leaves us with a cartoonishly gaping jaw and trembling fingers, giving us the instantaneous urge to write it up. Ninjas and ninjettes, that’s exactly what we have here today.

The Hunna are a Hertfordshire four-piece consisting of Ryan (Vocals/Guitar), Dan (Lead Guitar), Jermaine (Bass) and Jack (Drums). This is more than likely the first time you’ve heard of them, given the fact that “Bonfire” and “She’s Casual” only came out two days ago. Upon pressing play, you’ll quickly realize this is a name that you’ll soon hear a lot more of in the near future.

First up in this two-track collection is “Bonfire,” which was produced by Tim Larcombe (Lana Del Rey, Halsey) and mixed by Dan Grech (Wolf Alice, Circa Waves). It’s frenetic, yet extremely polished, carrying the heft of a band that’s been writing songs for decades. Drenched in anthemic nature, it immediately insights the need to start singing along, which is incredibly rare for a debut release.

The B-side to this tune is “She’s Casual,” dials back the intensity a bit, showcasing an impressive lyrical ability and cadence that lures listeners in within seconds. The track then switches back and forth effortlessly, showcasing larger-than-life crescendos and calming breaks rife with playful hums paired with a steady kick.

With a debut release as impressive as these, we have to imagine that the live show is equally as impressive. Check out their tour schedule below the players, and pick up some tickets ASAP.

Justin Bieber – What Do You Mean (Convex Remix) [TMN PREMIERE]

Justin Bieber
What Do You Mean (Convex Remix)

We’re just gonna come right out and say it – it takes a whole helluva lot for us to even open up an email with the Biebs in the subject line, and even more for us to actually click the Soundcloud link. If the track somehow finds its way to our ears through those two safeguards, it has to be truly spectacular for us to post it. Well, that’s exactly what happened when pressed play on this incredibly delicious remix from 22-year old Producer/DJ Convex.

Originally from Hawaii, this current Los Angeles resident has put an impressive spin on “What Do You Mean,” giving it a gorgeous future persona. Playing to Bieber’s strengths (yes, we’ll admit he has some), Convex highlights the vocals, seemingly making them even more silky and seductive before. Couple those in with rolling clicks, stunning synths, and haunting tweaked background vocals, and this interpretation has left us wonderfully stunned.

This tune follows a string of successes for this youngster, including being named the 2014 EDC LV Discovery Project Winner, playing at Nocturnal Wonderland, and garnering support from artists like Destructo, Zeds Dead, and Wax Motif.

If you want to catch him live, you can do so at the upcoming Insomniac event, Escape this Halloween, on October 30th

Brave Town – It Won't Be Long (Third Kind Remix)

Debuting an artist is something that we hold near and dear. Over the past six years, we’ve had the pleasure of breaking numerous artists that are now playing the biggest stages, dominating the radio, and becoming household names across the globe.

Today marks another debut, as we bring you a first look and listen to 20-year Nashvillian old producer Third Kind. As we’ve seen so many times before, this aspiring musician also splits his time with classes at a university. However, while a lot of college dorm room producers start their craft at that point in time, Jonathan Rankin has actually been immersed in music from a very early age, taking to a set of decks in just the 7th grade.

Remixing fellow Nashville natives, Brave Town, Third Kind has put a delicious future twist on what was originally a glowing, guitar-centric indie rock tune. Focusing heavily on the engaging original vocals, this remix effortlessly fuses together the two genres, creating an impressive, unique persona of its own. Vocal treatments aside, the fast, rolling snares, powerful, future-style synths, and atmospheric hissing, drips, and drops are definitely the heroes of this song. When they all come together, it’s hard to not get completely lost, helplessly smiling at the enveloping experience.

[House] option4 – Vibe On ft. Michael O/Say Woo

One of our favorite beacons in the Denver dance scene is back after a long hiatus with two freshly delivered originals, and we frankly couldn’t be any happier about it. For those of you who aren’t familiar with The Late Night Legend, aka option4, now’s a perfect time to start bolstering up your catalog with his always soulful, often groovy, and unfailingly dance-inducing tunes. Also, we should note that the aforementioned nickname was completely fabricated for this post. While it certainly has a ring of truth to it, you might get a strange look if you address him as such on social media, or face-to-face.

“Vibe On” is the first track on this newly released EP, and it features singer/songwriter Michael O, who you may recognize from Pitch Perfect 2. Positive, uplifting, and inspiring, the iconic lyrics glide along a sexy-as-hell bassline effortlessly, giving listeners something to both dance and sing along to. As the song progresses, well crafted and placed vocal samples and chops add to the memorable persona, leaving us wanting to hit the replay button a few more times.

“Say Woo” leans a little more to the lighthearted side, boasting vocal samples that shouldn’t come as any surprise. Coupled with those playful “woos” and “yeahs” is a very organically derived house style, which goes heavy on the kick and well-accentuated percussion. It’s not overly complicated, and still perfectly maintains that soulful experience we’ve come to know and love from this Denver-based Producer/DJ.

“Vibe On” will most assuredly be a great addition to a long, arduous day, and “Say Woo” is the perfect fit to a rowdy after-party. You can pick both up on beatport, via Nurvous Records, and have both on hand for when those occasions arise.
