[MP3 Playlist] The Trap Dojo: Volume #7

The Trap Dojo is here once again to take over the world, infusing everything we can with 808s and snares. Forget about cowbells, we need more gunshots.

Oh Snap!! hits us first with “Watup Bitch” an absolute club banger that could make any dance floor go crazy, love the 90’s vibe coming off Flygirls vocals. No word on when this one is coming out though. “Flex” by Solice starts off with a dance beat to keep those feet moving but comes out of nowhere (just like Solace did) with a huge haunting bass drop. CRNKN has been on such a massive roll lately and brings us two new tracks this week. Both are simply oozing with gangster swag and filled to the brim with gunshots and heavy beats and hooks. Dupstep pioneer Caspa remixed this Ludacris track way back in 2010. It didn’t get much attention or an official release then, but was just put back up for free on his Soundcloud this week. Up next are a couple sounds by OG Status, definitely a group to keep an eye on. The rest of the list is hit after hit, with ETC!ETC!, Brillz, TrapZillas and Big Chocolate all going hard. Godmode get dark with their own brand of “Satanic Trap,” and Baauer shows his incredible diversity and ability to produce hype anthems as well as tracks like this remix of Brick + Mortar.

[Trap] Bird Peterson – Drankenstein 4

Last week, Bird Peterson, the producer from Austin, Texas released his fourth, and possibly final chapter in the “Drankenstein” mix series through Mad Decent. For over a year, Bird has been using the Drankenstein handle to remix popular electro tracks, turning them into instant Trap bangers. While his remixes are great, his Drankenstein Mixes have always been something very special. Filled with (mostly) Trance classics, with a healthy amount of heavy dub bass, Bird traps these tracks out, not simply by increasing the 808s and snares and throwing in the odd gunshot or “Damn son” sample, but instead by expertly layering lyrics by some of the best dirty south Trap rappers like Three 6 Mafia, T.I., Future and Crime Mob over every song. Now, Bird has given us the entire mix separated into the individual songs, resulting in 15 incredible mashed-up tracks that would fit well into any Trance or Hip-Hop set, or act as your soundtrack when you are hitting the streets. This week has been absolutely massive for Trap music! I won’t bother to tell you about how Trap is conquering and infiltrating all forms of EDM, because, if you have been paying attention over the past couple of months I’m sure you already know (and if you didn’t know that, we welcome you to the wonderful world of the Dirty South). First up Wick-It The Instigator throws some classic dub sounds before switching it back to a straight-up “Dirty South Gangsta” beat. Next is a kid you definitely need to be familiar with because he is blowing up in a HUGE way. Already featured on two of the past Dojos 15 year old ∆lex Young brings us two absolute bangers; the first, a collab with The Hi-Yahs, “So Much” and the booty-dropping “Boomerang”. Hey, while we’re on the subject, experts in booty dropping, shaking, bouncing and percolating, Bro Safari drop “That A$$” down to the floor once again. Watch out for another huge track from him later today. Another Trap Dojo regular, Ookay remixes a couple old favorites by Sidney Samson and Bingo Players. I hope this guy can keep making such great tracks so consistently, so far releasing 8 tracks in the last month that his Soundcloud profile has existed. Yet another big figure, Luminox, whose Trap mix of Bingo Players “Rattle” has been picked up by the likes of Ministry of Sound, remixes one of the two tracks this week by The Party Squad, bringing those Hardstyle sounds to the streets. The rest of the list basically serves as a who’s who in the Trap scene, with names like Oh Snap!!, gLAdiator, Trill Murray, Gent & Jawns along with a few lesser known names sprinkled in for good measure.

If you still haven’t heard, Trap music is absolutely taking over the EDM scene, with producers from all over the world and from different Genres tackling the dirty south sound of Trap. Meyhem & Antiserum kick off this week with an absolute banger that definitely deserves the title of “Anthem”. Ian Boom slaughters it with Own Supply Hi, a huge track to be sure. Next, Bleep Bloop produces some of the deepest bass on the list; play this one on the loudest system you can find because it will definitely shake your foundations. Le1f, one of the first openly gay rappers lays waste to the haters and spits homoerotic fire over a killer trap beat by 5kin and Bone5, with an awesome video you can find here. Next, everyone’s favorite South African Rap/Rave group Die Antwoord kills it with, what else, a song about singer Ninja rubbing his dick on expensive shit. DJ Hi-Tek’s production really shines on this one. ETC!ETC and Brillz, hot off their Bueller EP last week show no signs of slowing down with a huge remix to Pharoahe Monch’s Simon Says, a killer track in its own right. I won’t go into too much detail about the rest and let you enjoy the 808s, but the last two tracks by DJ Slink and Alter Natives, show a much different and chill side of the Trap wave. As always, don’t be afraid to hit the “buy track” button, you might get lucky with a freebie.

[MP3 Playlist] The Trap Dojo #1

Welcome to the first volume of The Trap Dojo. This new weekly feature on The Music Ninja will bring you playlists of some of the best new Trap Music being released. This first volume includes some brand new tracks as well as a few of the hottest trap anthems of this past summer, and examples of the versatility of the genre with the many different styles on display. If you regularly follow The Music Ninja, you may have a vague idea of what Trap Music is; or this may be a completely new musical experience for you. Trap, the label originally applied to Southern Hip-Hop artists like T.I., Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame and others, has now been adopted to describe this new musical movement, using the gangster beat of that Southern Hip-Hop, along with pumping 808 bass sounds, crisp snares and hi-hats, and mixing it with a more electronic sound. One of the fastest growing genres, Trap music is being promoted and produced by the likes of Diplo, Skrillex and some of the biggest names in EDM. Like any genre though, it is best to let the music speak for itself, so turn up your speakers, crank the bass up to “earthquake” and enjoy the first Trap Dojo.
