[Rock] Glass Caves – Summer Lover EP

Whether their recent hype pays homage to the incessant and undeterred busking they’ve embarked upon, or is a testament to their melodic charm and indie swag; Glass Caves are making waves on the streets and stages of Northern England.

The pulsating and ardent energy they emit has captivated bypasses in York, England, for many a month. Recently they transferred their earnest efforts into a sold out local venue and delivered a startling performance to an electric home crowd. It’s this drive coupled with unarguable talent, that has seen Glass Caves cause a storm at both Leeds and Reading festivals. More recently they mesmerised crowds at notorious Northern venue: The Brudenell Social Club, which this year has seen the likes of Albert Hammond Jr, Yuck and The Raveonettes gracing its stage.

It’s on the crest of this buzz that Glass Caves present the title track, taken from their upcoming EP: Summer Lover. Here resides a stark reminder of Britpop past and anthemic classics, immersed in contemporary euphoria. Tight melodies meet their match in a soulful, controlled and yet considerably raw vocal. Their stringent and compact noise has cultivated comparisons from Fleet Foxes to live melodic extraordinaire’s Local Natives. Whilst embracing these resemblances Summer Lover also exudes the allurement of The Maccabees, circa Wall Of Arms, with its pacey, composed and energetic sound.

Whatever the parallels to come, here lies a band on the brink of bigger things. Quite simply, this track is nostalgia for the modern age. Believe the hype.

The EP Summer Lover is launched on the 9th of December. Title track is available online now!

[Pop] Bloom Twins – Faranheit

BloomTwins
Fahrenheit

A slice of sultry and a piece of gloom pop featuring a haunting piano accompaniment. Meet Ukrainian duo Bloom Twins: meddling in both modelling and music they’ve now leapt the pond to London, where they currently reside.

Their most recent venture is their rendition of Kish Mauve’s ‘Fahrenheit’. Taking a minimalist and stripped down sentiment Bloom Twins overlay their interpretation with dreamy soundscapes and a dash of darkness. Beneath their perfected pop vocal, and amidst the mature harmonies, lies a forlorn undercurrent. This track succeeds in being both familiar and recognisable, yet uneasily unique.

Whilst they’re already hyped with high hopes, Bloom Twins at the age of seventeen, have a few years to reach their predicted status. Here’s a stark and unblemished reminder of a potentially big future.

[Rock] Loon Lake – Carolina

LOON LAKE
Carolina

Remember the early nineties, when indie exploded? Rhyming verses, a big chorus and a bunch of drunk, elated fans mouthing hooky lyrics. These days it’s all a bit demure. Where there was once sweat there’s a hipster haircut, anthems are exchanged for something a bit more experimental and a beer’s second preference to a nettle tea. It’s all about lo-fi twee.

Rise from the rubble Loon Lake: a Melbourne based five piece, armed with nothing but catchy chords, a sprinkle of honesty and some unpretentious indie pop.

Avoiding artifice, Lake Loon’s latest offering “Carolina”, is expressively authentic in its sentiments and simplicity. An stadium-sized and carefree chorus, that simultaneously and excitedly sings of regret. Here lies the kind of track that will leap into your head, etch its lyrics on your brain and then pursue you for the rest of the day.

Unashamedly uncomplicated, “Carolina” may just be the perfect summer fling.

Carolina is out now, Loon Lake’s full length album Gloamer is released October 11th

[Indie] Malpas – Charlemagne

MALPAS
Charlemagne

Where beauty meets the beats, this sparkling new track from Malpas is the love child of a lustful honeyed vocal set upon a heavily textured backdrop of mechanical beats, synth-laden pop and a myriad of dreamy nu-gaze soundscapes. There’s no collision in this seemingly effortless collaboration, cultivated by songwriter Ali Forbes and producer Andy Savours (My Bloody Valentine fans insert nod here).

“Charlemagne” fuses acoustic electronica and mechanical drum beats with a contemplative and melodic vocal. Their roles interchange throughout: the voice being both the spine and heart of this track, carrying waves of regretful nostalgia, whilst remaining sincere in its sentiments. Meanwhile the versatile backdrop acts as an industrial support and a sound-shifting chameleon whose composition alters. The product is a beautifully reliant and seamlessly blended structure, in which one can’t exist as strongly without the other component.

Charlemagne has a wide frame of reference in regard to its influences, and its output is demonstrative of clearly competent and fresh composers. It’d be reductive to continue outlining the attributes that produced this triumph, but let’s just say the outcome is impeccable.

Charlemagne is first in line for release from the EP Promise. 23rd September- Killing Moon.

Don’t expect big crescendos from this London duo. They’ve avoided peaking and troughing as much as they’ve dodged the try-hard vibe. Here lies four minutes of ethereal authenticity: a myriad of instrumental talent masquerading as a modest and quietly stunning pop piece.
