[Happy 420] A Playlist Of Songs To Get Lifted To

Towlie

Here at The Music Ninja, we acknowledge that the relationship between music and marijuana go hand in hand…and we are pretty sure that a good number of our regular visitors probably puff the magic dragon themselves. Being this site’s resident toker, I thought I’d share with you a few of my all time favorite songs to get lifted to on this 4/20.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – The Weed Song

’Bone Thugs
N

This song is such a staple and reminds me of when I first started getting lifted in college. Bone Thugs really capture the essence of being high with a dreamy and atmospheric sound making this song so easy to repeat over and over.

DJ Quik – Bombudd II

’Bombudd II.mp3′

Not the typical DJ Quik song. Usually he gives us a nice danceable hip hop beat, but this reggae driven track sets such a great mood when you’re lifted. Quik talks about all the things he feels when he smokes be it paranoid, overjoyed, becoming aware or not even feeling a thing, all accompanied with the sounds of bong rips in the background.

Mayer Hawthorne – Green Eyed Love

I love Mayer Hawthorne for a lot of reasons. His polished vintage sound is certainly one of them, but we both seem to have the same admiration with what he describes as his green-eyed love. Enjoy watching the clouds from above on this track.

Bob Marley & The Wailers – Easy Skanking

And finally, what 4/20 playlist would be complete without some Bob Marley. Such a joyous track…plus you really can’t get more blatant in a song than saying “excuse me while I light my spliff, good God I’ve got to take a lift.”

Happy toking everybody. Enjoy burning one down this afternoon listening to these songs. As always, be safe and responsible.

[Hip Hop] Led Zeppelin – Stairway To Hip-Hop Heaven (Gramatik Remix)

Stairway

Whenever I hear that a classic is covered/remixed, I instantly get flashbacks of songs that I love(d) being completely mauled to the point of being unrecognized because someone in the production room got way too ambitious. By adding in a subdued beat and a well thought out time stamp, Gramatik (originally from Slovenia) gives you his hip-hop instrumental take on this classic rock staple. An example of “less is more” is displayed so well with this track by giving you the guitar line you fell in love with, accompanied by a beat to bob your head to.

[NEW] Santigold – Go (feat. Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs)

Santigold

I was starting to wonder where Santigold went! She drops an incredible debut album in 2008 giving us a fresh sound with songs like Shove It, Creator, and Unstoppable, and she disappears on us! Sure she was on Summit in the Summit (raising awareness about the worldwide water crisis), and was featured on a few songs by Basement Jaxx and N.A.S.A., but for the most part she’s been pretty quiet lately with no new material…until now! She doesn’t seem to have strayed too far from her worldly sound on her new track “Go.”. With a little bit of help from rock goddess Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, this track is sure to be played at every party this summer.

If this is a sneak peak into what the rest of her sophomore album is going to sound like, we are all in store for a treat.

[Remix] Sleigh Bells – Rill Rill (Clique New Trends Remix)

Sleigh Bells Clique New Trends Remix

Sleigh Bells made it onto many playlists last summer when their debut release of Treats hit the stores back in June. With their loud and boisterous sound, you knew that this band was here to make a statement…and UK DJs Club Clique wanted to change that statement into something completely new in their “Rill Rill” remix. This dancey little remix is full of cowbell, live guitar riffs, claps and basslines that really highlight Alexis Krauss as an actual vocalist making you appreciate this song in a new way…almost reminiscent of New Young Pony Club or CSS.

[Mash Up] Kaskade, Diddy Dirty Money, & Dirty South – Coming Home at 4AM (Kaskade Mash Up)

Kaskade

Kaskade’s “4 A.M.” is easily my favorite song of his. Something about Becky Jean Williams’ soft voice as she coos over the lyrics just does it for me. I would always play that song on the way home from the club, venue, dj set etc.because it’s such a nice way to end the evening on a soft and sweet beat (and I know I’m not alone on this). I think Kaskade took that into consideration, mashing up 4AM with Diddy Dirty Money’s “Coming Home.” Not only do the two conceptually and lyrically work, Kaskade made magic throwing in an funky beat and a crazy build-up to go with it.

[FRESH] Duck Sauce – Charlie Sheen (Spinstyle’s Bi-Winning Edit)(Barbra Streisand)

Duck Sauce’s “Barbra Streisand” got a ‘winning’ makeover! As if you needed another reason to love the infectious beat of this song, the “Charlie Sheen (Spinstyle’s Bi-Winning Edit)” pumps this track full of so much ‘tiger blood,’ it makes you feel like you were banging 7 gram rocks with the man himself. Pop culture appropriation at it’s finest…DUH!

[Folk] Of Monsters And Men – Little Talks

The resurgence of folk-influenced music has definitely been made apparent by the success of bands like The Shins and Fleet Foxes, more recently with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. Who would have thought though that an organic and folksly sound could be born out of the country that brought us Bjork? Iceland’s Of Monsters & Men have carved their own niche in the genre and have been growing a fanbase since posting a video of the band jamming in in a living room back in October on YouTube. It’s hard not to smile when you listen to this jaunty tune laced with tambourines and an fantastic accordion solo. Are we to believe that this is what people in Iceland listen to when drinking sweet tea and listening to the bullfrogs on the bayou? Couldn’t say…but the positive spirit of this song will lead to you abuse the repeat button either way.

It’s always so great when a band sounds just as good live as they do in the studio.
