[House] Porsches – Karate (Need & Necessity Remix)

Porsches
Karate (Need & Necessity Remix)

Perhaps the single most satisfying occurrence as a music writer -especially for a publication which prides itself on breaking artists before anyone else- is seeing acts with whom you’ve been enamored with evolve from releasing free tunes on their soundcloud to putting out music on some of your favorite labels. Such has been the case with Denver based house duo Need & Necessity whose latest record, an official remix for Porsches’ new single “Karate”, has been snapped up by tastemaking Australian dance imprint Sweat It Out! Music (also home to acts like RÜFÜS, Motez, Cassian, Yolanda Be Cool and What So Not) . Over the past few years we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing a steady ascension from the pair, and their latest remix offering is perhaps their best yet. Taking a deeply underground approach to their revision, N&N breaks down “Karate” into a club-ready jacker through the tactful implementation of rumbling sub-bass and their signature shuffled hi-hats before it gives way to a pounding synth line and one of the biggest grooves we’ve heard in a hot minute. With their last EP release, Patience, being picked up by another one of our favorite labels, Sleazy Deep, and now their Sweat It Out! debut, we’re expecting even bigger things from Need & Necessity as the year winds down.

Stream Need & Necessity’s “Karate” remix above, and be on the lookout for even more house gems from the assiduous duo in the near future.

TMN Presents: Small Black @ Larimer Lounge - 10/31

We’ve been absolutely ecstatic about our next ‘TMN Presents’ show in Denver, so for Halloween we have quite the special night planned. Coming off of their latest long-player, Best Blues, on mega-tastemaking imprint Jagjaguwar, we’re thrilled to bring Brooklyn based four-piece Small Black to the Larimer Lounge in Denver, CO this Halloween. Already with an impressive list of releases including two EP’s and 3 full-lengths ranging from wistful electro-indie-pop to chillwave and lofi 80’s pop throwback, Small Black has left quite the impressive footprint in just the five years they’ve been releasing music together. This Saturday is looking to be quite the party as well, with support coming from San Francisco psychedelic synth purveyors Painted Palms, who also will be drawing from a pool of freshly minted tunes with the recent release of their second album, Horizons, on Polyvinyl Records. We’re getting our costumes in order, and ears tuned for what will no doubt be a night of tasteful debauchery in Denver.

[Indie] Folded Like Fabric – Patiently

Folded Like Fabric
Patiently

Some songs simply have a way of injecting a special feeling into the start of your day. Such was the case this morning when we came across I Tried, the debut EP from Folded Like Fabric and their opening single “Patiently”.  Folded Like Fabric is the Hastings, UK based project of Jay Mooncie & Connor Sims, and the pair’s jazz inflected take on a contemporary blend of R&B, pop, and indie sensibilities have had us swooning head over heels since first consumption. “Patiently” ambles out of the gate into a slow-burning build as Sims’ misty reverberations -which carry the faintest echoes of If You’re Feeling Sinister era Stuart Murdoch– dominate the first guitar-tickled half of the tune before picking up a loungey drum roll and gradually evolving into a more complete version of itself. The perfect pairing with your morning or afternoon coffee, trust us.

I Tried was released on 25th September via Beauvoir Records and can be picked up here. In the mean time, and since you’ve already made it this far, enjoy “Patiently” from Folded Like Fabric above.

[Disco/House] Cazzette – Genius (Prinston Remix)

Cazzette
Genius (Prinston Remix)

As the atmospheric backdrop for this writer has turned a little cold, dreary and rainy in Denver, it was only fitting to counteract Mother Nature with some upbeat, sunny nu-disco. Filling that space is an official remix from enigmatic Swedish producer Prinston, who’s touched up Cazzette’s “Genius” with enough funk, soul, disco and classic house to have us dancing all the way through the impending weekend. Prinston riffs on Cazzette’s boisterous original by pulling its rolling cadence back to a breezy stride and instilling a bevy of Nile Rodgers tipping guitar licks to appeal to your funky side in the process. Previously, the mysterious Swede has already remixed Cazzette and his single “Sleepless”, but also wields credits on revisions of Avicii’s “Waiting For Love” and Maroon 5’s “Sugar”. With under 200 Soundcloud followers, 100 Facebook fans and a polished sound rivaling any of today’s most notable producers, Prinston is a bona fide find in today’s climate of music dispersion… which you might’ve heard we have something of an ear for. Be on the lookout for Prinston’s debut EP, due out in 2016, and in the mean time, sit back and get loose with his remix of “Genius” above.

[Denver Giveaway/Event Preview] The Music Ninja Presents: Teen Daze w/ Cemeteries, Shark Dreams @ Lost Lake Lounge – 10/22

Denver Event Giveaway
Teen Daze @ Lost Lake Lounge, 10/22

Perhaps our favorite single common thread around the staff at TMN is the ability to showcase artists in our favorite cities across the U.S. We’ve been able to bring some of our absolute favorite artists’ live shows over the years as presenters, and this Thursday (10/22) in Denver, we’re incredibly proud to bring another very special show to the Mile High City with Teen Daze. Fresh off of the release of  another excellent and critically applauded LP addition to the enigmatic producer’s catalog (he uses only his first name professionally), Morning World, Teen Daze will no doubt bring with him another excellent incarnation of an expanding live show to Lost Lake Lounge. We’ve been able to gradually witness Teen Daze’s steady evolution from his earliest work, which was often times lumped in with the ‘chillwave’ movement, to an artist whose rhythms and melodies have taken center stage and allowed the Western Canada based producer to offer a more engaging, and even dance-oriented concert experience. Needless to say we’re chomping at the bit for another chance to see Teen Daze in such an intimate venue.

The night’s opening flavor kicks off quite tastefully as well with Portland via Buffalo ambient-pop experimentalist Cemeteries. Also coming off of an extremely well executed LP, Barrow, which had us drawing up comparisons to the current arc of post-punk revivalists and darkwave flag bearers including The Soft Moon, and A Place To Bury Strangers. Just excellent stuff really. Rounding out the bill is newly formed Dream-Pop troupe Shark Dreams, who thus far have released only one demo and have our curiosity piqued with their worthy entry into the world of singles.

Of course, when we present a show, we’d rather not just talk about it, but get our savvy readers in on the fun as well, so we’re giving away not one, but two pairs of tickets to this Thursday night’s show. As always, entering our contest is beyond simple. Just “like” Teen Daze, and The Music Ninja’s Facebook pages, and comment below on why you’re excited or deserve to win. That’s it! We’ll notify our winners Thursday afternoon, the day of the show at 12:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. Stream our preview playlist below to get your ears ready, and good luck!

For those of you looking to secure a ticket, don’t fret either as tix are still only &10.00 for this one. Snag them here!

There are a few rules, of course:
– The event is 18+, so tell all your friends to increase your odds of winning!
– You are responsible for your own transportation.
– You must bring a valid form of ID to pick up your tickets at the Lost Lake Lounge door.
– You must find a TMN representative and let them buy you a drink (perhaps a Red Bull for our non legal friends?)

[House] Pat Lok – Your Lips ft. DiRTY RADiO

Pat Lok
Your Lips ft. DiRTY RADiO

It’s always a treat when two of our favorite entities come together for a warranted collaboration, and we’ve gleefully gotten to add another groover to that list on this fine Monday. TMN mainstay Pat Lok, who most recently stopped by our pages with his remix of The Knocks’ viral single “Classic”, has added another soulful house gem to his carefully crafted catalog by enlisting the vocal duties of fellow TMN regulars,  Canadian indie-R&B slingers DiRTY RADiO to create “Your Lips”. “Your Lips” is equally suited as a club-ready track or casual listener, pairing pulsating deep-disco vibes to DiRTY RADiO’s sensual vocal track, which results in a silky smooth melody that beckons its listeners to the dance floor. This one’s already garnered support from BBC Radio 1Xtra as well as artist support from the likes of Tensnake, Moon Boots, Goldroom, and more; solidifying Pat Lok’s staying power in the process. Stream “Your Lips” above and let’s start dancing away this Monday afternoon.
