[Indie/Synth-Pop] Roosevelt – Night Moves

Roosevelt
Night Moves

Roosevelt has long felt like an act waiting for that one crossover hit before spilling over into mainstream consciousness. While the Cologne based Greco-Roman Records mainstay hasn’t unveiled a significant amount of production since 2013’s excellent Elliot EP, save for some choice remixes and covers, we’ve been waiting for any sort of indication as to when we’ll be afforded the fortuitous opportunity of another Roosevelt record for well… a few years now. And so, as Greco-Roman’s Soundcloud rather unexpectedly dropped the first original single from Roosevelt since last year, “Night Moves”, we took notice like a perked up prairie dog peering out of its hole. All of Roosevelt’s sonic elements on which we’ve grown to love are still there; the warm and suffuse melodies, the soothing psychedelia and the streamlined pop structures, but this time around they’ve wrapped themselves much more closely than ever to the realm of dance music. Carefully layed out acid synth -which leans into Phuture’s 1987 vision more than his tastemaking contemporaries might stray towards- worms its way throughout Roosevelt’s thick sea of pop mutations, while a steady four-four kick never relinquishes its hold on the entire track. We could go on for hours about the finely tuned single that is “Night Moves”, but we know you all came here to listen over anything else. Indulge yourself above.

[Industrial/Future/House] Golden Features – Baxter

Golden Features
Baxter

It’s no doubt one of Australia’s most sought after musical exports is enigmatic masked dance slinger  Golden Features; and if you’ve read our pages regularly you know that’s quite the statement what with our fiery love for our friends Down Under. After finally unveiling the full extent of an upcoming Australian tour featuring San Francisco’s The M Machine, Golden Features simultaneously passed down the first taste of an upcoming EP, XXIV, in the form of a dark and gritty future-house stomper, “Baxter”. “Baxter” is paced with a set of murky,  sweeping pads and a rolling kick-drum filter before unloading a rhythmic dancefloor assault of melting synths, punchy drums, chopped and pitched vocals and minimal percussion. With tunes like this coming out of the Golden Features camp, it’s next to impossible to contain our  collective enthusiasm for the Sydney based artist to gift us with his latest body of work. Do this one, and your ears some justice by playing “Baxter” through a proper set of monitors. You’ll thank us. Check out Golden Features full Australian run of dates below and stream “Baxter” above.

Friday 3 July – The Tivoli, Brisbane

Saturday 4 July – Thebarton Theatre, Adelaide (with What So Not)

[House/Disco] Julio Bashmore – Holding On ft. Sam Dew

Julio Bashmore
Holding On feat. Sam Dew
It’s become increasingly difficult to not recognize the absolute #hustle emanating from Bristolian dance producer Julio Bashmore as of late. Coming off an impressive touch of singles which include the succinctly groovy disco-house burner “Rhythm of Auld”, and the classic Chicago house leaning “Kong”; we’ve finally found out more about his impending debut LP, Knockin’ Boots. This morning, Bashmore dropped yet another carefully composed piece of his album puzzle with a shot to disco revivalists everywhere in the form of “Holding On”, along with the concrete announcement of a July 10 release date for Knockin’ Boots through his own Broadwalk Records imprint. JB’s certainly showing off a diverse set of production chops in the buildup to Knockin’, touching down on bases of both classic and deeper but melodious house, nu and classic disco and sterling pop structures to encase an increasingly impressive set of singles. Featuring the lush vocal stylings of Sam Dew, “Holding On” flirts with a few genre ideals, but ultimately rests its laurels within the aforementioned confines of the 2015 real-disco-revival. Led by a set of scuzzy, late 70’s inspired strings and the archetype of classic rolling drums you’d expect to hear Larry Levan mold a Paradise Garage set around, “Holding On” bends slightly more contemporary with a fusion of shuffling hi-hats and an expertly swung, constantly evolving bassline to wrap everything with a lovely bow. Check out Julio Bashmore’s complete tracklist for Knockin’ Boots below, and stream “Holding On” above. Until then, we’ll be waiting rather impatiently for perhaps the biggest dance release of the Summer.

Cold As Ice (L.O.O.P Remix) [LoveStyle Records]★OUT NOW★

As a writer whom prides their body of work not just on the quality utilization of adjectives and similes, but also on the timely manner in which you can deliver a strong, cohesive article before anyone else; it is always a special moment when one of our favorite producers posts a full tune on Soundcloud at the drop of a hat. [House/Chill] Alesso ft. Roy English – Cool (Autograf Remix)

Alesso ft. Roy English
Cool (Autograf Remix)

We’ve been riding along on Autograf‘s steady output of sticky sweet house music from their humble beginnings cranking out melodic remixes, to what has now blossomed into a complete live electronic act -and one of the hottest in dance music for that matter. Lately, the trio has been taken on slightly more substantial fare, with a worthy debut original “Dream”, and the latest offering from our dear friends sees a bit of French Touch bubbling to the surface as they’ve reworked Alesso’s Roy English featuring single “Cool”. While the original may be better suited to lavish and excessive EDM club settings, Autograf carries “Cool” into another niche altogether. Alesso’s anthemic grand piano line is pulled back ever so delicately, while waltzing behind a beautifully modulated synth line to create an extremely effective and utterly groovy take on the original. Whether you’re cruising down a sunny highway, taking it in at a rooftop party or devouring this one during peak hour; Autograf’s remix of “Cool” functions brilliantly.

[Video] Rose Quartz – Leaving Now

Way back in December, we featured the aurally consuming synth-pop single from Rose Quartz “Leaving Now”, while today we finally got our hands on the Denver based four-piece’s accompanying visual piece. Rose Quartz recently wrapped on a nation spanning tour with Generationals, so as they’ve caught a brief window of down time, we were gifted with a lovely music video. The video features separate points of view between a feuding couple, complete with baroque and glittery imagery to accompany “Leaving Now” superlatively. Check it out below.

[Indie/Electro-Pop] Autumn in June – Hours [TMN Premiere]

Autumn In June
Hours

Molded in the depths of South Central Los Angeles’ tumultuous and effusive streets, Autumn in June‘s paradoxical moniker has always seemed to fit the burgeoning alt-pop artist. Whether you’re comparing the pleasantly slick indie-pop output of Autumn in June to the incredibly deep amounts of hip-hop and rap dominating the area’s musical landscape, or those syrupy sweet, reverb laden vocal incantations against what has become a hotly charged political backdrop since the late 60’s; it would be difficult to think up Autumn In June’s story for a fictitious film, let alone believe it in the real world. But fiction, Autumn is not. Behind an impressive debut EP, he’s blessed our Ninjas with an exclusive premiere for latest single “Hours”. “Hours” bends the kind of 80’s synth-pop progression that would make Martin Gore and Vince Clarke green with envy around dynamic, hip-hop tipping drums, droning guitars and even a cheerful xylophone pattern which gleams like a cracked rose through a melancholy soundscape; creating a beautiful view into Autumn in June’s artistic psyche and powerfully emotive vocals. We’re already drawing comparisons to early Devonte Hynes with a subtle, grittier edge (check out his entire soundcloud here), and you can bet we will be all hands on deck for anything else coming from the genre eschewing producer. Until then, stream “Hours” above before anyone else.
