Perhaps the single largest lifeline pumping through this wonderful site of ours is the passion to discover artists & bands that might’ve been passed over by some larger tastemaking publications, or not had the type of marketing teams bringing so many acts to prominence in today’s musical climate. Our latest discovery falls within the realm of proper house in the form of Sacramento based 8150. Although the mysterious producer wields years of studio production credits, his first foray into solo territory waited until its level of quality was on par with the sterling sounds of bigger-label dance tunes. “Wonderful”, our house tune du jour does just that, pacing itself behind a blissful intro comprised of sultry pads and a delicately crafted piano progression, before giving into girthy bass licks and just a lovely set of vocal chops pulled from the one and only Aretha Franklin. We could dive even further into the minutiae of why this one hits our chochlear cavities so well, but we’ll just shut up now and let your ears be the judge. 8150’s latest single finds a home on fledgling imprint THNK TNK Records, marking their debut release, and if “Wonderful” is anything to go off of, we may have a new label in the running for favorite independent dance collective in the Western U.S. within the next few years. “Wonderful” is available as a free download over on Soundcloud, but since you’ve made it this far, don’t bounce on out of here without streaming above.

Some magical songs seem to pull their listener into a saccharine sweet pool of sound, while also brandishing a surgeon like precision throughout its production. “Wave”, the OKBADLANDS featuring single from rising Australian producer Golden Vessel is certainly one of those tunes. A simple and sticky melody rests atop a bed of carefully placed piano, airy pads, measured drums, and just a beautiful vocal slice from fellow Aussies, Sally and Kate of OKBADLANDS. Try not to get your swoon on to this one.

About the tune, the young Brisbanian shared: “I’d been working with Sally & Kate over the last few months producing tracks for their debut EP. I really loved working with them, and they are both immensely talented, so I decided to see whether they wanted to collaborate on this track. After a quick creative discussion over some burgers, I got stuck into finishing up the instrumental and OKBADLANDS had the vocals finished up within a week.” If only all singles this good came together so easily. We first stumbled upon rising D.C. based producer zacheser back in April when his debut original record “Skippy” sailed smoothly onto our radar. The young artist’s latest sees him tackling the remix game with a beautiful, melodic revision of Vincent Coleman‘s “Little Eyes”. Utilizing a foundation of housey roots, disco influences and unsyncopated ensemble rhythms, zacheser paints an addictive soundscape that pulls its listener into a tranquil flow state of aural consumption; while staying true to Vincent Coleman’s balmy original.

About zacheser’s remix, Coleman remarks: “DC producer zacheser is such a talented individual & I’ve been a fan of his for a while now. I reached out to him to do a remix and he surpassed my expectations, creating this new vibe to “Little Eyes” that still plucks at your heart strings but also gets your feet moving through an easy going atmosphere of grooving synths and consistent percussion.” I don’t think we could have said it any more eloquently. [Techno/Indie-Dance] Tiger Tooth – Clementine [TMN Premiere]

Tiger Tooth -the East Village, NYC based electronic trio comprised of Johnny Siera, Will Broussard and Sofia Szamosi- came to us like the sweetest of gifts when they asked for our hand in premiering bouncy analog-techno instrumental single “Clementine”. Immediately, a muted synth that sounds like it was pulled straight off of an old 909 is underpinned by a buoyant kick-clap, setting the stage for the rest of “Clementine” to blossom into what sounds like a mid-2000’s electro romper lingered around a techno warehouse just long enough to embrace the weird while manging to escape with all of its accessibly cool points. This one fills us with the kind of gritty electronic joy that powered the blog-house era with so much fun, yet tasteful dance sounds. “Clementine” is one of the lead singles from Tiger Tooth’s self-titled LP on the fledgling imprint Baby Tooth Records, and with the amount of detailed craftsmanship found on just their first LP, it’s safe to say we will be waiting patiently as Tiger Tooth’s catalog continues to evolve and expand.

[Event Review] Project Pabst: Denver

While the influx of major brands into all sectors of independent art over the past decade or so has certainly seen a large swath of fans and critics let out a collective groan; it is events like Project Pabst that at least let us know that some corporations are putting their efforts in the right places. Last Saturday, a pair of us Ninjas set out into one of Denver’s most diversely beautiful neighborhoods, The Five Points/RiNo Arts District (which was conveniently also this writer’s own hood) to enjoy one of the more eclectically diverse days of music we’ve consumed in the Centennial State in years.

We arrived fresh on a sweltering afternoon just in time to see Brooklyn synth-pop outfit Small Black, who if you’ve followed us for some time, know we have developed quite the soft spot for -especially after playing our Halloween TMN Showcase last year. The four-piece paced the day wonderfully, ranging their sound from wistful electro-indie-pop, to chillwave, to lofi 80’s pop, and all of those murky spaces in between. After running through a slate of singles off of last year’s LP Best Blues, Small Black arced their set brilliantly, landing upon their shining star “No Stranger” to wrap up an hour-long set.

[Denver Event Preview] Project Pabst – RiNo Arts District – 5/21

Already an established and highly praised festival in Portland, Project Pabst is set to touch down for its first ever stop in Denver, and we’re chomping at the bit for their all-day lineup featuring the likes of TMN Favorites Best Coast, Small Black (who headlined one of our TMN Showcase parties back on Halloween), K. Flay, and local Denverites turned national darlings Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats; along with classic staples including the Violent Femmes, Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires and loads more across seven stages on Saturday, May 21st in Denver’s booming and eclectic RiNo Arts District. We’ve been watching Project Pabst pick up steam as it nears closer and closer, and with the announcement yesterday that all tickets have now been sold out, it’s shaping up to be a beast of a day for music in the Mile High City.
