The Chill Dojo #124

We’ve had no shortage of fresh musical offerings in 2015, each week bringing with it a diverse list of names as we uncover incredible new talent. This edition’s shining discovery is a French artist by the name of Petit Biscuit, who in one fell swoop has made us fall in love with his gentle sound. The culprit, ‘Sunset Lover’, is simple in premise but complex in sound, gliding through waves of vocal chops, beautiful guitar melody and blissful chords. When it all comes together it creates a vivid mental image saturated in all the colors of summer. jackLNDN may be a much more familiar name to our humble Dojo, but he never fails to delight with each successive installment of his signature chill grooves. As always, there’s just the right touch of dance-floor influence to keep this one ready for just about any occasion.

As far as other newcomers go though, Spire was unearthed onto our radar this week as another one to watch on the renowned Australian scene. Never before have we heard the ability to blend such peaceful vibes with elements of glitch-hop. Together it creates the most bizarre sensation of extreme bass and serene soundscape, but it’s a feeling we would very much like to experience more in future. Anticipation is the only thing that comes over us with each new teaser of GRiZ’s new album, and with the early stream of his collab with Talib Kweli released this week, it’s fair to say it has never been stronger than now. On the lighter side of his notoriously funky sound, ‘For The Love’ tones down the usual glitchy bass for a more hip hop style, but as can be expected, the sax is the thing that really steals the show for us. We couldn’t cut short this funky affair without a shout out to the beatmaster Gramatik, and it’s with very good reason too. Only a few days ago he unleashed the ‘Faraway’ instrumental that is one of the smoothest we’ve ever come across from the maestro. This dog is certainly not out of tricks that’s for sure, and our bodies are once again powerless against his hypnotic groove that he wields with almost effortless power.

All this goes to show that we’re never short on surprises when it comes to the quality music on display every week. And that’s exactly why this obsession is too good to give up anytime soon. Peace out.

The Chill Dojo #123

When it comes to chill vibes, nostalgia has the power to evoke vivid memories that can be triggered by just a single note. With his latest track ‘childhood’, rising producer Sam Gellaitry has done just that, and made no secret of his intentions either. Utilizing a potent combination of emotion-rich flute, superb beats and a soul-touching melody, this is one that hits straight in the feels, and transports you into a time-warp of distant recollections. It’s almost impossible not to lose yourself with this in your ears. If it’s got you craving blissful sounds of a similar nature, then we’ve got the perfect follow-up with a few additions from Krys Talk. ‘Rainbow Resort’ has the nostalgia-meter continuing to run on overdrive with some serious Kirby vibes and colorful sounds that burst into feelings of a carefree time. On the flip-side, ‘Forget-Me-Not’ turns up jazzy elements to express its relaxed sentiments, and yet as the title alludes, there is still an undeniable tinge of longing about it all. ‘Forever’ may just voice the exact opposite of this idea, but this latest jam from long-time favorites Snakehips is very much on the same wavelength when it comes to the undeniable funk laid down over the beat. It’s time to shake yourself out of the deep thought of the previous features, because this one was made to groove to!

It’s always a good week for the Chill Dojo with news of the next compilation from the always magical Moving Castle collective. It was only yesterday that volume 004 graced our ears, but the immense talent of the artists involved demanded a few shout outs in the write-up. Awaiting your ears are the glorious musical creations from names such as AObeats, Jai Wolf, Manilla Killa, Mark Johns…and that’s just one collab!

Make your way down the rest of the packed playlist this edition and you’re bound to stumble across many more gems. Peace out.

[Funk] Zanski – Saturnine EP

Young Canadian producer Zanski has been on our music radar for a little while, successfully whetting our appetite for his potential with incredibly funky remixes of the likes of Porter Robinson, Childish Gambino, and most recently a Stardust classic. Now the up-and-comer is ensuring we take note of his talents in crafting his own originals with the release of his latest Saturnine EP on SectionZ Records. Heavy-hitting electro-funk grooves and jammin melodic breakdowns are set in motion from the get-go, with all intentions to unleash this energetic display and command total intention from all listeners, familiar or otherwise. For those coming in fresh, there are clear traces of influence from fellow genre ambassadors uppermost and Lemaitre, but the EP really comes into its own here with the unrelenting assault of insane instrumentation that could only have been the result of countless hours of studio sweat. While the first 3 songs carry a very similar passion for this style, interestingly enough the final (and title) track switches things up with a much softer feel. As if allowing your body some reprieve from the intensity of the musical experience so far, ‘Saturnine’ heroes progression and astral vibes to add a sweet touch to this ending of what is a very memorable release. It’s one that we’ll surely be referencing when we continue to write about this talented individual in his bright future ahead.

The Saturnine EP is out now via Bandcamp.

The Chill Dojo #122

Sultry vocals, playful brass and an infectious deep house groove are everything we would want in a Chill Dojo headliner, and that’s exactly what we were lucky enough to receive this week from Mark Johns and co. The talented songstress celebrated her 21st birthday when we covered this one a few days ago, and you can definitely hear the maturity on display here. The gifts kept on coming though, as the young Braeden Bailey chimed in with a quick remix effort shortly after ‘5 South’ surfaced. Slowing things down to a more sensual pace, the original is flipped with a stunning drum mix and sweet chords which accentuate the power of the brass instrumentation involved. The vocals are teased in the final seconds of the track, leaving us desperately craving a follow-up with an extended version. Seriously.

Louis Futon has been a consistent groove machine in recent weeks, his name an ever-familiar presence in reviews and playlists on TMN of late. If you happened to miss his latest remix on our site, or the #1 spot on HypeM no less, let this be another friendly reminder to catch his future bass style mix effortlessly together with some lyrical fire from G-Eazy. This next track had us digging through the Dojo archives as nu-disco fiend La Felix throws back to his unforgettable DCUP remix with a fresh upbeat original ‘Don’t You’. It was over a year ago when we were smitten by his incredible take on ‘Don’t Be Shy’, so to hear this similar vibe again brings back plenty of good memories. Seeing names like Hoodboi and Lido together on a release always bodes well for the incredible musical ride we are about to experience, so it wouldn’t take someone with any clairvoyance whatsoever to predict that ‘Palm Reader’ would be nothing short of amazing. No matter what’s in store for this week to come, we’ll be wearing a smile as long as we have this replaying in our ears. Peace out.

The Chill Dojo #121

We’re ensuring you kick off the week with a smile on your face thanks to some fresh young talent coming out of the UK. Ollygon’s chipper take on ‘Promise’ is bubbling with brightness and positivity, with an infectious groove to back up all its youthful enthusiasm. Loaded with generous helpings of recognizable pop culture samples, this track is far more than novelty though, that change-up displaying just how much musical expertise is at play here. With the mood set right now, it’s time to radiate more sunshine courtesy of a European triple-threat in Freddy Verano, De Hofnar, and MÖWE. With their powers combined, they’ve crafted a summer-ready chill house delight topped off with catchy vocals and a glorious piano melody. You can picture this one playing at your favorite outdoor venue while the drinks are flowing. In similar fashion, Dutch duo Larrykoek have brewed a special little acoustic number with plenty of kick. The refreshing cocktail of joyful melody and dance floor beat make for the perfect fuel to your next summer party. LA producer Matt DiMona continues our obsession with this week’s feel-good vibe as he adds a little deep house flare to the stunning LANY original. The beauty in this remix lies in how all the elements are designed to amplify the vocals, and the pace is treated with pure finesse all throughout.

The happiness flows much deeper than that for edition 121 though, and we guarantee your grin won’t fade until well after you’re done here. Peace out.

The Chill Dojo #120

The Chill Dojo returns after a short break, but the music world definitely didn’t slow down while we were taking a breather. The result is a playlist of over 40 tracks, covering all the unmissable releases in recent weeks as well as the best features from the all-important Valentines Day period.

Grabbing our attention first and foremost was Ta-ku’s incredible remix of ‘Talk Talk’, dishing up one of his most sultry pieces to date, complete with his own vocal input. Slow, pulsating drums create an atmosphere steeped in emotion that will simply wash over you. It wasn’t the only news for the George Maple hit though, with the first official remix from Moon Boots finally made available to stream. In signature fashion, the groove here is as clean as you can get, and suits the iconic vocals to a tee.

For fans of chill DnB, last week also saw the release of compilation, Then & Now, from MrSuicideSheep. As you’d imagine, it’s filled with all the best names in the game, and we’ve picked out the latest track from Rameses B to be the poster boy. It’s no surprise that the angelic voice of Holly Drummond is the perfect fit for this slice of liquid serenity, and we’re certain one listen will carry you away to the place where you’re most at ease.

Perhaps the biggest story over the period was the huge stream of Odesza remixes unleashed for the insanely popular ‘All We Need’. As much as we’d love to have featured them all, we instead decided to highlighted the amazing interpretations from Haywyre, Giraffage, and KAASI which best resonated with the vibe of the Dojo. Despite the massive influx of remixes, we assure you that each version is surprisingly unique, making this a situation where you should definitely not shy away from seeking them all out.

You’ll notice that this edition finishes with a heavy influence from Djemba Djemba. As if all this new music wasn’t enough, the immensely talented beatmaker decided to gift fans with a string of previously unreleased edits that were way too good to be simply left unheard. It took extreme self control to not throw them all in to the playlist.

That should just about cover everything for our little stint away. Consider yourself back up to speed. Peace out.

[Chill] Lana Del Rey – Black Beauty (Dinnerdate Remix)

Lana Del Rey
Black Beauty (Dinnerdate Remix)

Evolving one’s style and experimenting with new sounds is never an easy time for artists in the producing game. With all the excitement of exploration comes the risk of never being satisfied with the results or getting lost in a state of seemingly endless indirection. As is the case with most things in life though, the rewards are out there for those willing to take the leap, and for that we have this official remix from TMN favorite Dinnerdate as a shining example. It’s intimidating enough to take on the incredible talent of Lana’s vocals under normal circumstances, but to do so while carving out a fresh signature feel is a remarkable feat. The outcome speaks for itself, and the chills are still resonating from the first time this buttery mix graced our ears.

For those familiar with our previous features from Simon, don’t expect the usual deep house groove you may have grown accustomed to. As much as we’ve enjoyed all his past releases, nothing comes close to the pleasure of hearing someone have the courage to expand their repertoire and absolutely nail it. We won’t ruin the surprise for you, so all you need to know is that this one is sexy as hell. The perfect treatment for Lana’s voice that leaves us brimming with anticipation for what he’ll come up with next.
