We’ve had no shortage of fresh musical offerings in 2015, each week bringing with it a diverse list of names as we uncover incredible new talent. This edition’s shining discovery is a French artist by the name of Petit Biscuit, who in one fell swoop has made us fall in love with his gentle sound. The culprit, ‘Sunset Lover’, is simple in premise but complex in sound, gliding through waves of vocal chops, beautiful guitar melody and blissful chords. When it all comes together it creates a vivid mental image saturated in all the colors of summer. jackLNDN may be a much more familiar name to our humble Dojo, but he never fails to delight with each successive installment of his signature chill grooves. As always, there’s just the right touch of dance-floor influence to keep this one ready for just about any occasion.
As far as other newcomers go though, Spire was unearthed onto our radar this week as another one to watch on the renowned Australian scene. Never before have we heard the ability to blend such peaceful vibes with elements of glitch-hop. Together it creates the most bizarre sensation of extreme bass and serene soundscape, but it’s a feeling we would very much like to experience more in future. Anticipation is the only thing that comes over us with each new teaser of GRiZ’s new album, and with the early stream of his collab with Talib Kweli released this week, it’s fair to say it has never been stronger than now. On the lighter side of his notoriously funky sound, ‘For The Love’ tones down the usual glitchy bass for a more hip hop style, but as can be expected, the sax is the thing that really steals the show for us. We couldn’t cut short this funky affair without a shout out to the beatmaster Gramatik, and it’s with very good reason too. Only a few days ago he unleashed the ‘Faraway’ instrumental that is one of the smoothest we’ve ever come across from the maestro. This dog is certainly not out of tricks that’s for sure, and our bodies are once again powerless against his hypnotic groove that he wields with almost effortless power.
All this goes to show that we’re never short on surprises when it comes to the quality music on display every week. And that’s exactly why this obsession is too good to give up anytime soon. Peace out.
