[MP3 Playlist] The Chill Dojo #41

There are certain elements of a laid-back tune that elevate it to the status of summer music. We’re talking beach music, long-drive music, afternoon beers on the porch music. For chill summer sounds, the key ingredient is the beat, so this week we’re celebrating with plenty of infectious jams to enjoy for when the days are long and the sun is smiling down.

What better way to get things started than with a funked out collection from the latest album Dowhatyoulove by Aussie beatmaker Ta-ku. He may be immersed in the thick of winter in his part of the world right now, but he’s got you covered with a heap of dope mixes with that signature Ta-ku polish and future groove. The whole 18 track album is a must-listen for sure, but we’ve narrowed it down to the 6 that will get your summer right. A heap of other artists are in the mix with similar  sounding fresh hip-hop beats, but as you work your way through the playlist you’ll hit a selection of downtempo trap and electronic flavours as well.

We’ll keep the amount of reading to a minimum though cos the drinks are getting warm. So sit back, hit that play button and do what you love. Peace out.

[MP3 Playlist] The Chill Dojo #40

What’s that? 40 already? Damn, this dojo’s gettin old. Don’t worry though, we’re still keepin it fresh and chill for all you hip young’uns to enjoy. We’re still cool, we promise.

To prove it, we’re getting things going with something called “trap music”. That’s what the young people are listening to these days, right? In any case, our starting track from  E M P T is magic to anyone’s ears, and demonstrates that the young Romanian producer is just oozing with talent. The perfectly crafted percussion and vocal builds in this jam will be testament to that. And while we’re shedding light on some notable up-and-comers, check out the smooth finesse on this silky remix from bedroom beatmaker fwdslxsh. This artist certainly won’t be contained to the bedroom for long though, because these are the kinds of sounds that are taking the world by storm right now. He’s definitely tapping into everything about the scene well, right down to the trend of replacing vowels with consonants in your moniker. But that’s enough talking about the new, because this next feature is about to make things old-school in a big way. Dojo favourite Lindsay Lowend is channeling some serious 90’s nostalgia with this one, masterfully crafting these cosmic vibes from soundfonts sampled from a bunch of Super Nintendo classics.  See if you can pick out a few. Now for all the talk of being on top of all that’s new, it’s hard to believe we slept on this amazing Daft Punk edit which emerged back when the 15 second sample of ‘Get Lucky’ was all it took to cause remix overload. Well since then this particular version has amassed over 1 million plays on Soundcloud, so that has to say something. And that something is that this track is freakin amazing. No matter if you are religiously against the remixing of Daft Punk or are sick of all the versions that are flooding the web (and the Chill Dojo has been guilty of posting a few), this is the one that deserves exception. JT’s  ‘Suit & Tie’ is definitely another tune which has received plenty of remix attention since its release, and while there have been many a version posted on past playlists, there’ll be no apology for this next one as well. With sleek chord progression from UK producer Pikcha, how can you resist this little number?

So after 40 editions, what’s the secret to ageing so gracefully? That’s easy. Always keep it chill. Peace out.

If there’s one thing to look out for at this time of the year, it’s the re-emergence of summer disco vibes. Whether or not the influence of Daft Punk has sparked a disco revival in 2013, it’s certainly revealed that the demand for these soulful sounds is well and truly in the air. It won’t be limited to the dancefloors though, as the Chill Dojo gears up for plenty of funk-filled tunes on rotation.

And we’re kicking off this week in just that fashion, with a laid-back gem oozing with soul courtesy of Danish/German producer team Cool Million on the remix. The funky guitar rhythms and keyboard are seeped in 80’s style, but everything sounds amazingly fresh when all the elements combine. Coming in at 9 minutes, it’s one of the longest to ever feature on the dojo, but you’ll be too busy jamming along to even notice. We keep similar vibes flowing in our next track from a dojo newcomer in Sky Tony. With only 3 uploads on Soundcloud and 11 Facebook fans at the time of posting, there’s not much to reveal about this artist, but if he continues to produce infectious boogie magic like ‘Moves You Use’, these numbers are only going to climb. And while we’re talking all things groove, it’s hard to go past the latest remix from one of our favorites in Bit Funk as he puts his polished house production on full display. It’s time to wind things down now though, as there are plenty of slower downtempo jams to feature as well. The first comes from Greek duo WE SINK who are no strangers to the dojo, but have certainly stamped their name here with their downright sexy future sounds. The combination of gorgeous vocals and silky bass make for a certified baby-maker. It’s similar sentiments for this next one from Catching Flies in the wake of his upcoming EP. If you’re already digging the sultry elements of ‘Stay Forever’, the sax breakdown at 2:50 will have you melting into your seat. We finish this write-up with some much-loved chillstep, and it’s not often we have dubstep giants Zeds Dead gracing this humble playlist, but it’s the perfect time now with their latest, ‘By Your Side’, being the perfect fit. And of course, any mention of chillstep isn’t complete without some Sizzlebird, who has been releasing a steady stream of new material of late in the lead-up to his next EP, Avis Nocturna, with title track featured below.

It’s an exciting mix of classic and future sounds throughout this week’s playlist, all to be enjoyed in the present. But who’s really paying attention to time when you’re chillin anyway? Peace out!

[MP3 Playlist] The Chill Dojo #38

June is finally upon us and with it comes months of guaranteed chill Summer tunage. That’s not to say that the colder months left us in any short supply, but there’s something about this season that elevates this music to another level.

Our first track is the prime example as Snakehips goes next level with an edit to his upbeat hit  ‘On & On’. Just when you thought the original couldn’t get any better, the UK beatmaker adds a fresh touch which shines with pure happiness. We’re not done with this track yet though, because Kaytranada has also lent his skills to his own remix with an infectious deep sound and old-school hip hop beat. And as if to set a trend, Le Youth also revisited his own material with a slowed-down, sexed-up version of ‘C O O L’ which just oozes that classic R&B flavour. It’s the first of many baby-making Summer specials to come, that’s for sure.  Another certain thing about the Chill Dojo in the months ahead is that it’ll definitely feature plenty of Goldroom, with all the tropical stylings we can’t get enough of. TMN already covered the producer’s latest remix of Owl Eyes, but we’re throwing another one into the mix with a tropical-infused edit of his original ‘Angeles’ courtesy of the appropriately named Palm & Trees. And we couldn’t let this write-up end without bringing to light a remix from yet another dojo favourite in Shook, who recently released his downright funky take on Jamiroquai. It’s been two years sitting on this absolute gem, but we’re stoked it’s finally out for free download, and at the perfect time too!

It’s another edition loaded with those feel-good sensations, and this is only the beginning. We’re set for some of the most exciting weeks to come. Peace out!

[MP3 Playlist] The Chill Dojo #37

That time of the year is almost upon us and this edition of the Chill Dojo will get you excited for summer weather like nothing else. While we can’t wait for the season of long cruises, warm nights and good times, at least we will be fully prepared with all the right soundtracks for when that day finally arrives.

One song that is guaranteed to be on repeat all season long is a gorgeous drum n bass gem from Polish producer Silence Groove. ‘Dreams Do Come True’ is liquid dnb at its very best, with bright chords and a clean sound that is oozing with joy. Try not to smile, just try. If that last song left you floating on a cloud of happiness, then the latest from XTRAFUNK will ensure to maintain that elevation. The track title is no lie, this is music that will carry you away to where you want to be. It’s not only music that can achieve this sensation though, with some vocalists containing that very special power in their voice alone. LA songstress BANKS is one of those unique few, and when you combine such a gift with the production prowess of TEED,  you have yourself a mind-blowing result. Catch the original post from last week here if you missed it. In other news, SF producer Giraffage has been on a roll lately with a string of amazing mellow tunes, which may have just given him the confidence to bring a new take on the classic dance hit from Stardust. It’s a bold edit, but one that has been mixed to perfection and hits all the right notes. And while we’re on the topic of successful remixes, this next trap take on a JT smash by NY dJ eSenTRIK  is sure to make some serious waves. In a now heavily saturated genre, it’s polished sounds like this that will be the ones to stand out.

The fun doesn’t end there though, with plenty more fresh beats and tropical grooves from a heap of dojo favourites. Don’t be caught sleeping on this one! Peace out.

[MP3 Playlist] The Chill Dojo #36

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about the ‘state’ of certain music ‘scenes’, whether it’s growing trends or mainstreamization of certain sounds. As always, the message from this dojo is to chill and stay worry-free. While the saturation of particular genres and sounds may cause some to despair, there will always be artists pushing creative boundaries and providing innovation in their music. These are the people we look to highlight and celebrate in this playlist, who enable us to experience chill feelings with fresh sounds and good vibes.

A producer who does just that is London’s Snakehips, who brought us that magical edit of Bondax’s ‘Gold’. Now he’s back with a new original which will light up your day in a similar fashion, with smooth guitar sampling, sweet vocals and that trademark head-popping beat which carries you away to your happy place. We move on next to the soulful stylings of London-based songstress George Maple and if you’re thinking she sounds familiar, you would be correct. She features prominently on tracks from top UK producers like Bondax, Shadow Child, and of course Snakehips, providing the perfect vocals to compliment their stunning production. Another voice which is instantly recognizable is that of Lana Del Rey,  who sees her name grace the dojo again courtesy of a truly unique remix from Polish producer Chloe Martini. Certain singers lend themselves so well to mellow tunes, and her vocals are superbly handled on this occasion in creating this beautiful piece. Continuing this string of fresh sounds is Druid Cloak, the US artist known for unique creativity in his eclectic production style. This is again on show with his remix of ‘Invisible Colors’, which makes a stellar addition to this playlist. RAC makes a return this week, putting his signature upbeat touch onto a track from Phoenix’s latest album, Bankrupt. We also feature two more downtempo remixes of ‘Friday Nights’, as well as two further additions to the growing list of Sizzlebird’s amazing collections over the weeks.

Hopefully this should leave no doubt that the ‘scene’ for chill music remains alive and strong. Week on week the innovation and fresh sounds continue to amaze. Peace out.

[MP3 Playlist] The Chill Dojo #35

If you’re looking to start off your week in the most relaxing way possible, this installment of the Chill Dojo will be sure to deliver with some of the most mellow features to date.

It was looking to be a difficult decision for track of the week for #35 until the music of Dutch duo The Planty Herbs flowed through the speakers. ‘There’s Us” may just be the most chilled song ever to grace the dojo, and utilises a sound that epitomises the sensation that this playlist hopes to bring. It could be looped for hours on end and still maintain the same calming effect and amazing vibes it does upon first listen. From a song whose sound represents what we’re all about to one whose title does, the next tune, “Lazy Sunday” fortunately delivers on its promise to provide a killer Sunday feel. Mastefully crafted by German producer XTRAFUNK, a quick browse through his Soundcloud revealed a wealth of other great additions which carry similar feelings of bliss. If this has built up your cravings for disco vibes, then look no further than Louis La Roche to remedy your funky desires with his remix of the massive hit from Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding. It seems European artists are dominating the dojo this week, and Norway’s Cashmere Cat has become a definite favourite of late, and has seen his popularity skyrocket thanks to consistent displays of unique sounds and astounding production talent. For those of you who missed it in the Trap Dojo a little while ago, his latest remix of “Do You”  is an amazing mix of sexy synths and drumwork which work in pure harmony with the smooth vocals of Miguel.

There’s plenty more to write about this week, but this array of magical music is better heard than read, so delve into it at your own leisure. Peace out.
