Example – Stay Awake + New Album Track Listing

Example is always a favourite on The Music Ninja, and the cheeky English chappy has released some new tunes for us to feast on. The electro-pop maestro has taken a darker turn, giving a head nod to the 90’s trance crew, briefly high-fiving the dubstep possee and bringing in the layered bass driven ‘Example’ sound that’s gained the 29-year-old countless UK top 10’s.

Stay Awake comes loaded with some pretty immense remixes from Alvin Risk, Micky Slim, Moam, Delta Heavy and Pitron & Sanna. It seems like Skrillex has taken a shining to the Alvin Risk remix as he’s been including it in his sets… let us know if you include it in yours!

The Unofficial History of Moombahton

Download ALL 19 tracks on the Moombootleg

Read about the tracks selected –  Part 1 | Part 2

So I stumbled upon a great post the other day on Moombahton.com written by Chris & Marcus from Postcultural and TGRIonline that gave both a great overview of the genre’s origins and evolution, and also an amazing compilation of tracks (or Moombootleg) to give you a good understanding of the ever changing genre.

Here’s a quick exert from the post:

Even though it seems ubiquitous, devotees of moombahton must remember that their cherished genre is still a mystery to the music world at large. For those of us who have been following the ascendant sound, it’s easy to forget that most people can’t answer the question, “what is moombahton?”

Describing it as a Dutch house and reggaeton hybrid certainly doesn’t do the trick – that’s just jargon. You could try retelling the genre’s “origin story,” as it were, with Dave Nada slowing down a record into something more palatable for his cousin’s skip party, but that’s a setting, not a sound. Play the Nada-compiled Blow Your Head 2, and you get a specific vision of moombahton, albeit through Mad Decent’s rose-colored glasses. None of these give you a complete picture of a genre that has undergone so much in just over a year.

For those reasons and more, I’ve compiled The Moombootleg: 19 tracks over 80 minutes that attempts to present the story of moombahton for beginners. Moombahnistas might get a bit of nostalgia from these tracks, as I did when assembling it, but the real audience is your co-worker, your siblings, or even your parents, so they can finally understand moombahton. You can even fit it on a CD (remember those?) and let it blow the car speakers out as you educate your neighborhood.

Moombahton has caused such a stir in the EDM scene with a lot of producers claiming it’s ‘too easy to make’ so this somehow devalues the sound. Personally moombahton can do no wrong in my eyes. Upon initial listening it can be quite hard to take in, but imagine that you’re hearing these tracks amongst a crowd of crazy partiers and you can see how moombahton GOES OFF in clubs. This very nature of the genre is exactly  why DJ’s are quickly changing their stance and we’ve seen the quick rise of a moombahton era. So here’s 4 of my favourite tracks from the moombootleg featuring A-mac, MunchiAlvin Risk and Tittsworth .

The track is being released under Never Say Die Records (home also of Foreign Beggars) and has been quickly gaining recognition on the Beatport charts, currently resting at the #10 Dubstep spot. [OMG! Electro] Clockwork – Breaker EP Minimix

Woah – this has gotten me craving more! New York born producer Clockwork has got his new EP Breaker coming out on 1st August under Lee Mortimer’s label Wearhouse Music and to wet your appetite he’s created an incredible minimix. Here’s the track listing:
1A. Two Left Feet
1B. Breaker
2A. Wzup
2B. Blackout

An absolute menace live and always ready to slay the crowds in LA, Clockwork is pumping out some of the most highly anticipated sounds in the EDM sphere and that’s after only 3 years of making beats and DJ’ing. This minimix is exactly how a minimix should sound with each track given enough space to build and drop. To say that I’m super excited about getting my hands on the full tracks once they’re released is an understatement… these tracks may well define my summer!

Chilled Dubstep – Beethoven | Christina Aguilera | Eggchan | Jakwob

So who says you can’t have a nap with some dubstep gently nurturing you to sleep? Not me, so today I’ve got tracks to get you to you in peak nap condition.

First up is one of my favourite finds this month and it came courtesy of Sound Remedy‘s Facebook. The Chicago born dubstep producer recently featured on The Music Ninja with his Fuck Bill [O’Reily] Feat. Tyler, The Creator, political bombshell of track. This time he’s tamed his synth frequency dials and turned his hand to creating a much darker track using Beethoven’s classic Moonlight Sonata.

Next up is 19 year old producer fAux who released this remix a few months back but it wasn’t really picked up. Taking the stems from Castle Walls by  T.I and Christina Aguilera, the Australian producer has weaved together some magic and created a beautifully chilled sound. Brilliant.

Here’s a track from London based dubstep producer Eggchan. Set to feature on the Gamma Audio upcoming Global Wub Vol 3 compilation, Eggchan has really created a stunning composition which could be in danger of setting a pretty eery atmosphere wherever it’s played. Throwing out glitches and pops on-top of a text book vocal sample – this producer is definitely one to bookmark.

 Oblivious – Eggchan (Gamma Audio)

Finally, this track from Jakwob was released under his own record label Boom Ting Recordings back in September 2010 but it deserves a second play. At the time Jakwob was rolling off the success of his Ellie Goulding remixes and his next track was highly anticipated. On it’s release people were skeptical about the sound, but what’s interesting is that a lot of dubstep sounds and shapes have moved towards this broader horizon and the fact I’m still enjoying this track 10 months on proves (at least to me) that he was onto a winner.

[Salsa Juke] Munchi – Andando

So moombahton pioneer Munchi has just released his new Rotterdam Juke EP for free on his blog. The EP see’s Munchi explore his sound and this track, Andando, really got my attention. The intro features the legendary merengue guitarist Eladio Romero Santos who passed away in 2001, and the rest track is full of good slasa vibes!

Munchi himself put a great description on his soundcloud about this track:

“I tried to just keep it minimal and just vibing, just in time for the summer! When u on the road or just chillin on the beach, looking around and just being like: fuck, im feeling good today nigga.”

So pop those flowery shorts on over to the beach with this track blaring out your Boombox!

[Radio Rip] Coldplay – Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (Swedish House Mafia Remix)

With several videos appearing of Swedish House Mafia dropping this tune in their sets, it looks like they’ve just created another summer hit. This latest track was passed onto to BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong for an exclusive first play, who you may remember was the first to play the trios Save The World Tonight anthemic track too. We’ll bring you the full MP3 of this when it’s released in all its ‘un-radio-tarnished’ glory.
