YES! I love this track – NYC DJ/Producer Treasure Fingers has taken this Cassius original (1999 single) and thrown down a gauntlet of funky house to get you bopping. If I’ve got a gripe it would be my gripe with all house music that starts in the same generic “kick hat snare” intro but get over that and you’ve got yourself a gem of a remix.
Ashley Jones aka. Treasure fingers originally started in Atlanta but after sigining to AM Only he popped over to brooklyn to get the party started.
If he’s new to you, well he’s not new to the big boys – he’s done remixes for Miike Snow,Groove Armada, Eric Prydz and Chromeo so is starting to get pretty good at the game.
BetatraXx has got his sight set on world domination and has released his X EP for FREE. Making a statement on his site, Tim announced “it is out and ready to be spread. Share the music and help me take over the world”. Shunning the traditional forms like iTunes and Beatport – right here you’ve got 6 banging tracks in 320k form ready to be slammed onto your system. What brings a smile to my face about this EP isn’t just that it’s free, but more that you’d expect the 6 tracks to be average, but they’re anything but. Hit the play button and go download crazy!
Wasted celebrities doing the running man on tables whilst Foo Fighter play their whole new album for the first time… not your standard awards ceromony, but this is the NME awards 2011, and anything goes.
Brixton Academy
So on Wednesday I popped down to the O2 Academy in Brixton (London) for the ceremony, which is affectionately known as the “Brat Awards”, to find every indie rock and roller from around the world gathered under one roof in the name of music and, of course, free booze.
The NME Awards feels like a yearly rock and roll family reunion and over the years we’ve seen Jarvis Cocker become the head of the family, or the “NME Godfather” if you like. Before handing over the John Peel award for Innovation to the mighty duo Crystal Castles, he disciplined the raucous crowd using his Godfather status, pointing his cane and saying “Now listen up you lot, it’s always the same old faces, the same people every year causing trouble’ – genius.
Angelos... dressed to impress!
The host for the evening was the ever so funny Angelos Epithemiou from the British TV show – Shooting Stars and the night’s live performances came from NME Best New Band Hurts, PJ Harvey, Crystal Castles and Foo Fighters.
After picking up the NME Godlike award, Dave Grohl announced that “we were asked to play you 4 or 5 songs… but we thought nah, we’re gonna play for 2 fucking hours instead!”. NME magazine editor Krissi Murison called Grohl “one of the most important rock stars alive today” and Foo Fighters went on to play every track from their new album Wasting Light, followed by the classics of Everlong, Hero, extended version of Stacked Actors etc.
So how does the new Foo Fighters album sound? Heavy, grunge-tastic and everything I wanted to hear as a big Foo’s fan – my neck still hurts today from rocking out to it. With a release date of April 11th, the album didn’t contain any slow ballads, but each acoustic start was soon trumped by the enourmous sound of Chris Shiflett’s raging guitar.. that thing needs a leash!
Grohl commanded the stage and got almost every high profile rocker standing on their chairs for an extra 2 hours – a mean feat which I don’t think many bands around right now can do. The Who‘s front man Roger Daltry sang along side the band after presenting the award with an improvised version of Young Man Blues… felt like a moment in rock and roll history. Later in the set Grohl started rocking out on top of an unsuspecting table (video) and the usual crowd banter was present throughout – a 10/10 performance if ever I saw one.
The highlights of the Awards for me: Crystal Castles’ amazing performance ,which saw Alice scream out “Baptism of Fire” then collapse to the floor , Foo Fighters sheer presence and NME Best British BandMuse doing a very drunk interview (video) for NME.
Each table full of free booze to ensure an eventful night!
Ultimately, the running man moved failed spectacularly, with a defining face plant bringing the timeless dance to an abrupt end, but the night lived on with a great atmosphere and worthy winners. A big thank you to all the NME staff who were incredibly friendly on the night and also to Ricki & Harry for being general legends.
Awwww yeah – stop what your doing, sit up right and pay some close attention to one of the best EDM producers out there – BetatraXx. Real name Tim Nelson, he’s just released his Drug Abuse Remix EP on Metamimetic (a UK based label) it’s got some absolutely killer tracks on it. Getting some great remixes from 3 Kilos, Dave Scorp and Digital Switchover – the EP goes hard. BetatraXx has also got a new EP out called “X” which got off to a great start with an awesome looking launch party with a live drummer, put on by our good friends over at Gotta Dance Dirty – check out the video here.
When the boys of Dada Life release their mix tapes you know your always in for a treat. Februarys mix has thrown out some lethal levels of bass, with the Swedish duo Olle Corneer and Stefan Engblom arming themselves with the AK47’s of electro tracks right now. Before hitting the play, ensure you create a space for some big dance moves – it’s pretty epic.
Here’s 2 of my cheeky highlights from the mixtape…
Joey Youngman aka – Wolfgang Gartner, had his track Space Junk used as the opener on the mixtape. Wolfgangs sound is almost all through analogue synths and processes so it seems to always carry a certain purity to it – his latest creation being no different. Wolfgang Gartner – Space Junk
Prepare your ears for this one from German boy Miles Dyson. His his brand of grinding electro and huge synth sounds should make your purr like a kitten and dance like a wolverine – enjoy! Miles Dyson – I-tune (Original Mix)
Redial had a competition recently for the best remix of their track “Venom” and One Man Ben has released his version – it’s utter filth. It got me jumping the moment I heard it and it hits you with some bass madness from start to finish. What’s pretty cool about this remix too is that One Man Ben has avoided repetition, keeping the track really dynamic by slamming some clever sampling in and a bunch of layers. The result being that you’ll find yourself playing this over and over again.
Press play – and tell your friends about One Man Ben
Coming at you today with a Designer Drugs remix, we have Dada life. Designer Drugs have a new remix EP out for their single “Through The Prism” and each track is pretty darn hot. Dada Life got their dirty mittens on the track though and did what they does best – add a bit of filthy bass. Chug this out through your laptop and you’ll be bitterly disappointed – slam it though your big ass speakers however and prepare to get your jungle groove on as this track hits you with beats that are near impossible not to get your dance onto! Enough said, hit the play and choose your spot to groove in…
