[Unique Dance] Felix Cartal – Domo (Original Mix)

Vancouver-based Felix Cartal has been making electro, house and afrobeat tracks for a while now and he always seems to come up with unique sounds and production styles. In his latest single, “Domo”, Cartal fuses beautiful major chord progressions and melodic buildups with an unusual machine gun style synth line and afrobeat drums. Whether it is inspired by the red ballon, the blonde or the fuzzy little brown monster of the same name, “Domo” is a fun new ride that brings the listener into a happy place in Cartal’s unusual world.

[Remixes] Foo Fighters – Rope (Deadmau5 Remix)

This year The Grammys marked a significant turning point for electronic dance music. With Skrillex picking up 3 awards and Deadmau5 performing once again during prime time television it seems clear that dance music in general and dubstep music in particular have officially reached acceptance from mainstream society. Dubstep has unquestionably come a long way from the grimy basements and nightclubs in the southern UK where it began just 10 years ago. If the prestigious music critics who vote for Grammy award winners recognize the complexity and emotion behind electronic music then it is difficult for average haters to say anything negative about it anymore and for us here at TMN this is a very good thing indeed.

At the forefront of the movement is the amazing Deadmau5 who has also evolved immensely in the past few years from a great electro house producer to a audio visual demigod. In a Grammy performance that fused mainstream rock with his signature electro house style, Mau5 performed live with Seattle’s The Foo Fighters on their track “Rope”. Although the dissonant vocals are off-putting, this track does have some cool elements with its fusion of guitar power chords and heavy dance beats. So turn this one up as you sit back and watch EDM take over mainstream culture this year!

[Remixes] Nero – It Must Be The Feeling + Flux Pavilion and Nero + Brookes Brothers + MORE Remix

UK dubstep giant Nero has had a successful string of singles over the past few years due to his quality vocal samples and heavy wobbling bass lines. Although his tracks are good on their own they often take an innovative remixer to elevate them to greatness. Examples of this include Skrillex’s massive remix of “Promises” as well as Knife Party’s infectious and slightly maddening remix of “Crush on You”. We’ll let you be the judge of whether this trend continues with his latest single “Must Be The Feeling”. Although the smooth disco vibe of the original track stands on its own, some of our more hard core listeners out there might enjoy this drumstep remix by fellow brits the Brookes Brothers.

[Remixes] MIA – Bad Girls (AKIO Remix)

MIA is unquestionably one of the baddest girls in the indie dance scene today with her potential family ties to Sri Lankan militant groups and questionable party lifestyle. As if that weren’t enough, her latest stunt at the 2012 Superbowl during her performance with Madonna should seal the title. With one little gesture she told over 100 million people to fuck off. UK remixer AKIO took “Bad Girls” up a notch with his grimy synth lines and tough guy dubstep drums. Throw this one on your headphones tonight and flip a middle finger to the sky courtesy of The Music Ninja!

[Electro] Feed Me – Strange Behavior (Caveat Remix)

It is a tall order to take on the likes of UK giant Feed Me for a remix project, but fate rewards the bold. 16 year old San Diego remixer Caveat stepped up to the challenge with his rendition of “Strange Behavior”. Although the original definitely has more punch, Caveat’s rendition takes this epic vocal track into eery new places that Feed Me would likely be proud of. In any case this is a damn good job from a 16 year old and it is hardly fair to compare it to a seasoned veteran such as Feed Me. Overall we solute Caveat for stepping up to the big leagues even if he only made it to first base this time around.
