[Dubstep] Minnesota – Jetstream

When many people think of the word Dubstep they automatically assume it must be aggressive, harsh and dissonant to an extreme. It is refreshing to see producers out there like Christian Bauhofer AKA Minnesota who challenge this stereotype by making music with more of a melodic, songwriter focus rather than strictly making the loud sounds they can program.

If you’re looking for an alternative take on dubstep then you might enjoy Minnesota’s latest track “Jetstream”. The glitchy synthlines and dreamy arpeggios used in this relaxing tune not only give Minnesota a unique sound, but may also give a potential way for dubstep to escape the arbitrary classifications often laid upon it.

[Dubstep] Fonik – Pain Game

There must be something in the water on that massive island known as the UK. Pretty much every major dubstep producer seems to hail from there as if its a national policy to slay eardrums. Meet Robbie Mackie AKA Fonik, an upcoming artist from Aberdeen, Scotland.

In his track, “Pain Game”, Fonik stays true to the heavy bass tradition while pushing new boundaries with his Medieval 8-bit organ swells, legitimate music-theory-based progressions and seamless switch-ups between dubstep and four-on-the-floor beats. His debut EP “Altered Dimensions” just came out this week on Beatport so if you crave the UK flavor then quench your thirst with some fresh meat.

The latest release along these lines is called “Paradisco”, a collaboration between French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg and the always unconventional yet talented singer/producer Beck. This groovy track is ideal for lovers of nu disco and indie dance alike. Gainsbourg’s ethereal voice perfectly compliments Beck’s funky bass lines, crispy guitar riffs, and house-meets-rock inspired beat.

[Drumstep] Red Hot Chili Peppers – Give it Away (Psymbionic Remix)

As the dubstep landscape evolves it is exciting to hear artists break the mold. One such artist is Psymbionic from the “keep it weird” city – Austin, Texas. His brand new remix of “Give It Away” by The Red Hot Chili Peppers is really well done, with gnarly, twisting bass lines and intricate drumstep hits that perfectly compliment the original song’s funky style.

By ornamenting and augmenting the original song rather than completely destroying it, Psymbionic shows restraint and sophistication that is rare in dubstep circles. Look out for Psymbionic at this year’s SXSW festival as well as at solo gigs across the country, and groove with him as he keeps it weird.
