[Electronic] D.L.I.D.- Colour In Your Hands (ft. Fink)

“Colour In Your Hands” is the kind of song electronic music was made for; building like jenga bricks, one layer at a time. D.L.I.D. (Dick Laurent is Dead) drives the analogy forward with a big beat, timed snare hits, and a catchy vocal part that sits on top of the layering, allowing D.L.I.D. and Fink to choose which pieces to pull out, and when, until the whole song gradually begins to tumble and fall apart. When it finally does collapse and fade out, though, you aren’t yelling and hating yourself as you pick up wood blocks… Instead the song leaves you satisfied, but somehow wanting more.

[Album P/review] Tennis – Young And Old

Young And Old is the latest offering from the Denver sweet hearts known as Tennis. Stylistically, the band is known for having embraced the rebirth of surf rock- and riding that wave into the open arms of the indie pop music scene. The band formed after Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, a husband and wife duo, returned from a seven month excursion ripe with sailing, adventure, and handfuls of songs documenting their experiences. They teamed up with the engineer who worked on their first record, James Barone (drums), to complete the lineup and began touring under the name Tennis- a joke about Patrick’s sportsmanship during his college years.

With Young And Old, the band maintains their tribute to past styles of music but veers from the path they paved on Cape Dory with their clean guitar driven sounds. While they have not abandoned their signature feel yet, songs like “Petition” (which reminds me of the girl lead equivalent to MuteMath‘s “Allies”), “Origins”, and “Traveling” all incorporate synthetic textures and leads that exchange the band’s surf rock roots for danceable grooves, reminiscent of Motown, that make you want to move your body. The song writing is still killer, personal, and catchy but seems to be growing and maturing, sampling later decades of influence than their previous releases.

The record was produced by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, which may account for some of the band’s slight change in sound. The production value of the record is notable because when the band nods to the style of a specific decade with their performance, the record changes in quality enough to sound almost true to that time… without giving up the feeling of unity from track to track. Overall the record is really well done. It’s catchy, danceable, and unique. Tennis has always stood apart from the crowd, but Young And Old puts them in a league of their own.

Young And Old is set to release on February 14th 2012 and is available for pre-order HERE.

[New] Bahamas – I Got You Babe

Bahamas at TheMusicNinja

Alfie Jurvanen of Bahamas has long been known for his soulful style of folk music. The second single off of his forthcoming release, Barchords, is an example of him living up to his reputation. The drums are light and airy, the guitars are melodic and catchy, and the vocals are breathy, intimate, and complimentary to the guitars. Though the song is about losing someone it’s still really light hearted and easy to listen to; you’ll probably find yourself humming it throughout the day without even realizing it.

[New] Patrick Watson- Into Giants

“We started as lovers, don’t know where it’s gonna end” sings Patrick Watson on his fresh new single “Into Giants”. The song is warm and uplifting, touching on the way the world feels when you’re with someone special and all the ways that people can grow together. The instrumentation on the track is just as inspired as the lyrical content, combining upbeat drum patterns with finger style guitar, and a voice that sounds almost like a more energetic Bon Iver. Add catchy horn parts and big vocal harmonies to the formula and you have a feel good brand of poppy folk music that only Patrick Watson can deliver.

The groups new album, Adventures In Your Own Backyard, is set for release on April 17th in Canada and May 1st in the U.S. from Domino/Secret City records.

[Album Preview] Brigg Fair – full length debut

When making an album, recording live is the musical equivalent of doing your crossword puzzle in pen. It’s risky. If one member of the band falters or delivers a performance that’s less than stellar- it shows through in the playback and you pretty much have to record the whole song over. There are very few opportunities to “punch in” where you left off in this kind of recording environment. Because of that, engineers often steer bands away from live recording. When it’s done right, though, it’s gold. The Album becomes a testament to a moment, an honest feel for the bands sound, as if you were watching them at a concert. It gives the record an energy and drive that cannot be created through tracking.

This is the nature of the mantle that Geoff Ereth and his band Brigg Fair have taken upon themselves. A challenge that they have well met through both their performance and the location in which they recorded- the sanctuary of an old church, whose high ceilings allow for beautiful organic reverberation and a light pulsing echo.

[Experimental] 123MRK- Untroubled

Squelch & Clap’s 123MRK is an up-and-coming french electronic and dubstep artist who is known for his complex beats. His new single “Untroubled” is a perfect example of the style that has made him popular; with it’s broken rhythms, vocal samples, and synth leads it’s a crazy ride from start to finish.

Whenever I listen to electronic music I tend to do it when I’m driving, and “Untroubled” is perfect for that. The layering builds and builds, lead by vocal samples that sit on top of everything and imply melody to move the song. The broken rhythms that come in around the one minute mark really showcase the talent of 123MRK as a dub artist, dismantling the beat without disrupting its overall flow.

123MRK’s album “Refined Madness” is now availble here.

[New] Michael Kiwanuka- Home Again

British singer/songriter Michael Kiwanuka is a fresh cup of coffee for a world of drowsy, early morning, soul music. Michael comes equipped with melodic guitars, light percussion, and a voice that’s somewhere between Otis Redding, Miles Davis, Bill Withers, and Robert Pattinson. The title track of his new CD, “Home Again”, is an introspective take on the comfort and safety of home, and how you long for it when you’re away.

Home again, Michael’s new album, will be out on March 26th 2012 on Mumford & Sons‘ Communion label. Pre-orders are available.
