[Event Preview] BUKU Music + Arts Project – New Orleans – March 22-23

Nestled right in the heart of New Orleans, BUKU Music + Art Project is a wildly unique festival experience. It has the culture of a boutique event, coupled with the organization and production of a large-scale event, topped off with a diverse and eclectic line-up. On top of all of that, it’s in one of the best cities for dining, partying, and history. Unlike other festivals, located in remote forests and deserts across the US, this is one event you can definitely plan a full trip around.

We went down last year for the first time and couldn’t quite find the words for our experience. It’s culturally relevant, musically intriguing, brimming with top-notch art, and has a world of opportunities after the lights go off. It’s unlike anything else out there.

With that being said, it should come as no surprise that we’re heading back down this year. As we’ve seen in years past, the lineup is artfully crafted, boasting a thoughtful collection of all sub genres of dance, a dash of Top 40, some killer hip hop artists, as well as guitar-heavy emo rock, with Mayday Parade and Dashboard Confessional.

If you’re still on the fence, we recommend tuning in to Music Ninja Radio on BFF.FM this Friday from 4-7PM PST. We’ll be dedicating the first half of the show to everything BUKU.

[Event Preview] One Love Festival – Lake Perris, CA – 10/20-10/22

It’s tough to keep up with the seemingly endless supply of festivals. With only a limited amount of disposable income, it’s a challenge to pick and choose which ones are worth your time. The heavy hitters are always a good route, whether it be Coachella or Lollapalooza, but those come with a hefty price tag, and an endless sea of people all jockeying to get closer to the stage.

Lately, we’ve been checking out a few festivals that fall into the “Transformational” space. Aside from offering up a solid line up, they have a little more too offer — yoga, bonding ceremonies, healers, live painting, and more.

In a few weeks, we’re going to head out to Lake Ferris, California, which is about two hours outside of Los Angeles, for the One Love Festival. It covers all the bases mentioned above, delivering programming that goes well beyond music. Not to say that we’re not excited for a few of the acts playing — Moby, Mark Farina, and Alex Cruz are a few that we’ve highlighted. But, the thought of a deeper meaning to the festival experience is something we’re excited about, especially after hitting so many that are just about the music over the years.

To switch our usual routine up even further, we’re going to skip the camping, luxury hotel packages, and the AirBnB rentals, instead opting for a completely unique experience. It’s called the Lost Hotel, and it’s unlike anything that we’ve ever heard of.

You set the scene – each cube tent is a blank canvas. At the Lost Hotel we take an expansive notion of the word art. Surprise us. Shock us. Illuminate us. Do it however you please, and the floor, or at least one square cube of it, is yours. We’re specialized at vacation de-programming and, if needed, can help co-create a new story tailored just for you.

If you’re feeling lucky, or if you’d just like to help out with a great cause, our friends at Cadence & Cause have a handful of ways to get into the festival and support Fuck Cancer, a charity that helps with prevention, early detection, and emotional support for those battling breast cancer. From artist experiences with Alex Cruz, to the ultimate festival experience for four people, you have a chance to have the time of your life, all while helping something that affects us all.

While you’re checking that out, feel free to jam on the little playlist we’ve curated below, and get amped for your time out at Lake Ferris.

’Xavier Rudd – Follow The Sun (Alex Cruz Official Remix)’

[Festival Review] CRSSD Epic Weekend Recap

crssd2016_1001_164512-2828_flg

(PC: Felicia Garcia / CRSSD Fest)

San Diego’s Waterfront Park hosted its fourth CRSSD Fest this weekend, a place that’s become home to lovers of electronic music across the entire Southern Californian region. Maintaining a similar aesthetic to the previous CRSSD festivals at the park, the scene was filled with feelings of a tropical escape, an escape that differs only so slightly from that of the city the event is held in, but it’s the difference that gives patrons a feeling that they’ve left home and arrived at a new one. The lineup, as always, was stacked with legends and exciting up and comers alike. TMN had the opportunity to check out the show, and we’ve got a full run-down below.

The fest kicked off its first day with huge names like MK, Justin Martin, Miike Snow, Cashmere Cat, and Bonobo. As per usual, Dirtybird showed up in big numbers, and Justin Martin’s set and Shiba San’s set were ones to remember. There’s always something so special about the Dirtybird crowd. Knowing that all of your lives were probably touched at one point by Shiba’s track “OKAY” is a strong bond that not many other labels can achieve, and Shiba’s set was filled with all the depth and bass one would imagine. Justin Martin’s headlining set drew crowds that were worthy of his talent, and the set was an hour and a half of pure bliss. And while Justin Martin was taking everyone on a journey at one side of the festival, house music legend Marc Kinchen (aka MK) was giving everyone an education on the other side of the fest. Pioneering house music with tracks like “Always” from the 90s, MK has his finger on the pulse of house music now more than ever. We were ecstatic to see him headlining, getting all of the glory that he deserves.

’Adam Vida – Tomorrow Land (Prod. Mikos Da Gawd)’
’Adam Vida – Sifu (Prod. Mikos Da Gawd, Mr. Carmack and Woostaar)’

Combining agile flows, refreshing lyricism and Bay Area flavor, emcee A-1 has built a career out of ingenuity. Recently, the San Francisco native announced that he’d be leaving the A-1 project behind in favor of Adam Vida, representing a new, “more worldly” chapter in his artistic journey. Based on the releases thus far, which you can peep above, Vida certainly takes a step forward but one that fans of his early work will most certainly appreciate. Building off Thurlian, his final project as A-1, Vida’s style finds a balance between clever, comedic bars and laser-focused commentary. With producers like Mikos da Gawd, WooStar and Mr. Carmack laying down the backdrop for his message of positivity, the sky is the limit for Vida.

With that in mind, we couldn’t be more excited to be giving away 2 tickets to his first ever headlining show under the new moniker. Enter below to win a pair of tickets to catch Vida along with Mikos Da Gawd, Richie Cunning and Dregs One at The Independent this Friday, May 13th. Tickets for the show are also still available here.
