Introducing our Next Resident Artist — Mat Zo [TMN Residency]

If you peep the backlogs of TMN, you’ll find posts about Mat Zo dating back as far as 2012. After bursting onto the scene during EDM’s heyday with a refreshing sound, Zo has continued to push his style forward to one so encompassing that you never know what to expect when you hit play in the best way possible.

In the 3 years since his Grammy-nominated debut album, Mat Zo has continued to pour out free downloads on his Soundcloud page remaining an influential producer while some other artists of the same generation grew stale. His 2016  sophomore album Self Assemble, captures that adventurous spirit displaying Zo’s versatility and growth as a musician since his debut. Playing out like one seamless and intentionally cinematic experience, the album spans bass / tech house, future funk / soul, electro-pop and even dubstep.

Mat Zo’s catalogue embodies much of what we love about electronic music–a penchant for innovation paired with the undeniable talent to pull off extensive experimentation. It’s for that reason that we couldn’t be more excited to welcome him as our latest Resident Artist. Over the next month, stay tuned for exclusive Mat Zo content on TMN. In the meantime, check out a medley of tunes from his latest album below.

[Indie] MOSAICS – Year of Valor

MOSAICS
Year Of Valor

Longtime Ninja readers may recall San Francisco’s MOSAICS from our 2015 interview shortly following the release of their debut, Of Colors–an impressive fusion of creative electronic production and acoustic guitar licks. Last week, the 3-piece returned announcing a new EP and unveiling its title track.

“Year of Valor” shows a clear evolution of the MOSAICS sound, in part with the help of new lead vocalist Maryam Sadeghian. The song opens with an infectious guitar loop that blends with syncopated hi-hat percussion making way for Sadeghian’s voice, which leaves an immediate impression. The production, even with its constant progression, gives just enough room to draw light to compelling songwriting regarding the world’s constant struggle with superficiality. During the chorus, the backdrop takes a psychedelic turn as the guitar reverses before an almost EDM-esque drop back into the verse.

Given that I’ve been listening to Moderat’s album on repeat recently, there’s definitely some comparison to be made in MOSAICS intersection of soul, indie and experimental electronic elements. However, the SF trio possess a more accessible, pop-leaning sensibility making Year of Valor, which drops May 20th, a likely summer breakout project. Keep your eye out and, in the meantime, vibe above.

Ninjas At Ultra Music Festival: Our Must-See Acts

12828316_10153585012267739_5718378475028926558_o

There’s no doubt about it – Ultra is a massive, sprawling festival featuring numerous well curated and impressively put together stages. Close to 200 acts will be populating these stages throughout the three-day festival, playing every single kind of dance music you could possibly think of. It can be daunting, at times, but fear not. We’ve taken the time to hand-pick a handful of our absolute must-see-acts, and included a sample set from each.

Make sure to stay tuned later in the week, too. We’ll have an artfully crafted playlist for each of the three days at Ultra Music Festival.

John Digweed | Friday @ Resistance

john-digweed

’John Digweed – Live From Ultra Music Festival Miami 2015’
When I think of sets that are guaranteed to be an epic time, John Digweed is one of the first that comes to mind. He has slowly built a DJ empire over the years that’s acclaimed as being one founded on quality over hype, and for many years (as many as 10 some could argue) existed as an undiscovered talent in his UK home. That stealthy Digweed. Thankfully he’s now on a global touring circuit of grand proportions, and Ultra is the perfect time to catch him. Check out his set “Live in Cordoba” and try to not have the insatiable desire to see him live immediately. I dare you. – Ninja Jordan

Gryffin | Sunday @ Live Stage

Gryffin_3

’Gryffin Flight Log 002 – Winter Solstice Mix’
Recently shifting into original material after a slew of successful remixes ranging from Years and Years to Bipolar Sunshine, Gryffin takes to the live stage for what is guaranteed to be an uplifting experience. He’s garnered quite a following already, but still seems relatively under the radar considering his millions of plays and impressive renditions of pop and alternative tunes. After working with Hotel Garuda and Josef Salvat, his stock continues to exponentially grow as a possible household name for indie dance and electronic music as a whole. – Ninja Mitch

Party Favor | Friday @ Worldwide Stage

party-favor

’Wantpicks Episode 28 mixed by Party Favor’
If you’re looking for a diverse set centered around booty shaking beats, Party Favor is your guy. There’s a reason this dude has been co-signed by the likes of Dillon Francis, Diplo, Brillz and Flosstradamus, he knows just how to turn things up. He already rocked major festivals last year, including EDC and Ultra, and now he’s back to make an even bigger impact. Expect an unforgettably wild experience as he returns to Miami to top his momentous 2015 live set. – Ninja Ren

Black Coffee | Sunday @ Resistance Stage

12670774_10156591425950591_7304411232185720572_n

’Black Coffee – 2nd May Mix’
The unofficial leader of Johannesburg’s booming and eclectic electronic dance scene (check out the mini-docs about Black Coffee and Johannesburg, put together by Resident Advisor for an in-depth look), Nathi Maphumulo is a national icon in his home country, known much more widely as Black Coffee. In the past few years, Coffee’s finally been receiving the global acclaim and credit that his artistic counterparts have been heaping on for years. A true programmer, Black Coffee’s sets display house music that simply oozes with soul. His take on house draws inspiration from the indigenous music of his homeland, blended with a penchant for classic hooks and simplified song structure. It’s a blueprint that’s helped him inspire a generation of South African producers, and it’s high time you got in know. – Ninja Matthew

Patrick Topping | Saturday @ Resistance Stage

11222353_974549249234670_4305864582031256546_n

’Premiere: Patrick Topping @ Tunnels, Aberdeen (07. 11. 2015)’
If you’ve got co-signs and collaborations from the likes of Claude Von Stroke and Green Velvet, chances are you’re doing something right. UK-based producer Patrick Topping has done just that on his meteoric rise to the top of the tech-house scene. “Voicemail,” his 2014 collaboration with Green Velvet, remains in regular rotation for DJs worldwide, but Topping’s sound has continued to expand making every new release an adventure–ranging from dark and ominous to uplifting and soulful. His DJ sets have been hailed as some of the best on the biggest stages so he’s definitely an act worth catching at this point in his career. – Ninja Ashraf

Miike Snow | Friday @ Live Stage

miike-snow-600x600

’Miike Snow live Coachella 2012 full concert HD’
After a three-year hiatus, the Swedish indie pop trio is back in full force. Their long-awaited album “iii” was finally released, including hit singles like “Genghis Khan” and “Heart Is Full”. It will be interesting to see these veterans get together again and perform at Ultra Music Festival. Their immense energy and entertaining live sets will definitely bring down the house as the Friday headliner of the Live Stage. – Ninja Ivan

Tycho | Friday @ Live Stage

tycho

’Black Sunrise – Sunrise DJ Set at Burning Man 2014’
I’ve been a massive fan of Tycho for quite some time. His passion for ambient, multi-layered electronica and graphic design is inspiring, keeping me anxiously awaiting each time he plays. I know a lot of you are heading to Ultra to rage, but please trust me. This is one act of electronic mastery you don’t want to miss. – Ninja Clayton

JR JR Steps Up to Help Families in Flint [Cadence & Cause]

If you haven’t noticed, we’ve been highlighting our friends over at Cadence & Cause for the past few weeks. Shift your eyes over to either side of the page and you’ll see what we’re talking about. If you’re still confused, just know this – they’re an online platform that connects musicians and their fans to worthy charities.

As we continue our support for their initiative, we’re eager to spread the word about their latest campaign. We’re going to go ahead and assume you’ve heard of JR JR, formerly Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr. If you haven’t, we’ve curated a selection of our favorite songs in a handy playlist below.

Enchanting music and amazing live performances aside, today is all about what they’re doing to help with the Flint water crisis. To help fundraise for the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, members Joshua Epstein & Daniel Zott have combed through years of memorabilia for a number of incredible sweepstakes through Cadence & Cause. On the top of our personal wish list is the hand-painted stone blazer from the music video of favorite JR JR tune, “If You Didn’t See Me (Then You Weren’t On the Dancefloor).

In addition to that extremely rare piece of memorabilia, the band is offering up a bevy of other collectables, including the sax used to record their first two albums, a massive JR stage prop, sweaters from a photo shoot, and tour-worn NASCAR jackets. All you have to do to enter to win is contribute the minimum contribution.

As concerned ninjas, music lovers, and fans of JR JR, we strongly encourage you to head over and contribute. Each time you do, you’ll be helping families in Flint who are dealing with this incredible hardship.

’Gone’
’In The Middle’
’James Dean’
’Revelation Blues’
’JR JR – If You Didn’t See Me (Then You Weren’t On The Dancefloor)’
’Hiding – Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.’
’Don’t Tell Me – Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.’
’War Zone

[Cadence & Cause] An Inside Look at Youth on Record

A few months ago, as we looked ahead into this friendly partnership with Cadence & Cause, we had the opportunity to visit with one of their featured charities, Youth On Record. Located in Denver, Colorado, this organization seemed right up our alley. Essentially, they provide music education to at-risk teens, all of which can be counted towards school credit.

On paper, we were already behind their mission, from the simple standpoint that we love seeing new musicians being influenced and inspired. We didn’t know how much we would love what they do until we went down there.

The space they’ve set up is a musician’s playground, complete with a full recording studio that includes a tracking room and vocal booth. Kids walk around playing a bevy of different instruments, joined by fellow classmates throwing down bars on whatever it is that’s playing. In every nook and cranny, you’ll find these developing musicians collaborating, talking at length about what their project should sound like. It’s impossible not to beam from ear-to-ear, enjoying every minute of what you’re witnessing.

We wanted to know more about what this place meant to the actual people who were benefitting from it – the students. On the day they were set to perform with Twenty One Pilots, we caught up with a few of the organizations best and brightest. Check out what Christian, Naimah, Shewit, Alex, and Justa had to say.

We’ve made it easy to support Youth On Record. You can find numerous campaigns on Cadence & Cause which feature music, merch, and memorabilia from artists eager to help this impressive cause. If you’re in Denver, you can volunteer for them, which we highly recommend.

A very special thank you to our friends at Blurred Pics for putting this video together, and to CRL CRLL for letting us use his song.
