2014 is finally drawing to a close, meaning it’s time to look back on the year that was. As music bloggers, most of our reflection is done through music. This year we’ve decided to bypass the obligatory rankings and lists that lead to inevitable disagreement and argument. Instead, four of our most noble editors took upon the task of arbitrarily selecting their favorites from the past twelve months and decided to share their picks with all of you. Think of it as one final gift from us for your continued support throughout 2014. We hope you enjoy the massive playlists we have below, and wish you a Happy New Years!

[Bass] Alesso – Heroes ft. Tove Lo (Salvatore Ganacci Remix)

Alesso
Heroes feat. Tove Lo (Salvatore Ganacci Remix)[Out Nov 24 on Def Jam]

Out now the legendary Def Jam imprint is the remix of the debut single on the label from rising dance star Alesso. “Heroes” has been garnering some serious air time and gets the remix treatment from
Swedish producer Salvatore Gannacci, amongst a couple of others. His remix opens up proceedings with some low-slung dubbed out reggae vibes which enhance the vocals of singer Tove Lo and bring down the tempo to an easy swing.

Creating some tension, that gradually builds before the vocal crescendo and drop combine, switching the feel of the track completely. Big gassy kicks and riffs work inside scatty percussion, making Ganacci’s remix something of a banger. Seek out a copy of the remix on Monday when it lands.

[Drum & Bass] Decade Of Viper LP

2014 marks ten years in the game for Viper Recordings, the popular UK drum and bass label ran by producer and DJ Futurebound. The past decade has seen the platform gain considerable success, signing some of the scene’s most impressive artists and releasing a string of classic tunes that will be played for well over the next ten years. The label is choosing to celebrate their birthday by putting out a brand new compilation, “Decade Of Viper”, filled with both exclusive tracks and a set of classic Viper tunes that have been doing the rounds at D&B nights since they were first unleashed.

The array of artists that feature on this LP is quite astonishing – from Sigma to Delta Heavy, The Prototypes to Koven. Previously unheard music takes the form (amongst many others) of Tali “Forces”(Trei Remix), Smooth & Futurebound “Savoy Affair” and Cyantific “Bring You Love.” There are twenty Viper favourites on this album, ranging from DC Breaks “Halo”, Smooth “Virgo Cluster”, The
Prototypes “Pale Blue Dot” and Seven Lions “Below Us” ft. Shaz Sparks.

It’s certainly been an impressive decade for the Viper family, and we’re looking forward to the next one. The “Decade Of Viper” LP is out now, and you can purchase a copy here.

Get To Know: Inpetto [TMN Exclusive Interview]

German production and DJ duo Inpetto have just released a sublime single on Dirty Soul, an imprint of renowned dance label Be Yourself Music. Titled “Never Too Late” and featuring vocalist Bryan Finlay, it allows the pair to show of their musicality and attention to detail in impressive style. We caught up with Inpetto to hear a little more about their take on deep house.

When did you first both sit down and make music together, and has it always been a part of your family?

Funnily no other (known) family member besides us has a musical background. It was around 1995 when we discovered our interest in making music and spent more and more of our money and time on it. We then did a couple of our own tracks that we sent out to some music labels. Finally in 1999,our first track was released – this was the start of our musical career.

What pulled you in about the Jerk & Bastard remix?

We love that remix, because it is a complete rework of our track just using the sax and the vocals combined with amazing sounds and driving beats. You have to love the kind of remixes where the remixer made a complete new track by using only the main part like the vocal or main melody of the original – like we always do.

When DJing at your live shows do you both take on separate roles, how does it work?

Well, because we are two people, the situation comes where you have different opinions. Someone has to have the last word on decisions, which is the older one. But that doesn’t happen very often!

Outside of electronic music, what do you find yourselves listening to and do you think this is apparent in your productions?

Actually we find ourselves listening to any genre, but not every genre is an inspiration for our tracks. We are big fans of alternative/indie rock like Daughter, Josè Gonzalez or London Grammar, which might play a role in how we use melodies in our tracks.

What do you have planned for the New Year, maybe an EP or even an album?

We have a couple of new, maybe surprising tracks signed in the first part of 2015. Stay tuned, but theres no album planned yet…

[News] Cadence & Cause – Beta Rollout

You might be stopping and asking yourself, “did I just read that correctly? Is The Music Ninja posting a news item?” You’re correct in your second-guessing, as we rarely post anything but music, interviews, or show reviews. However, this new music platform is something that we believe strongly in. You may have caught wind that one of our co-founders has a new site on the horizon, which is entirely true. While he will still be a part of TMN, Clayton Warwick has plans to unroll a new music platform different than anything we’ve seen.

Cadence & Cause is a new website which connects musicians and their fans to worthy causes. Think of it as a combination between a music streaming service, a fundraising site, and kickstarter, all designed to create much needed revenue for worthy causes.

While we can’t go too far into what this site will entail, we can assure you that there are already large artists on board. It’s being revered as something incredibly positive for the industry, and we’re happy to be on board to support it.

Below, we have an exclusive VIP code that will get you onto our guest list for the beta rollout. This means that you will be able to get into the site before anyone in the GA line, and get the earliest access to some really unique opportunities from some amazing artists.

Click here, then enter your email address and the code below in the VIP side of the landing page.
