[Cover] Freelances Whales – Girl U Want

Does Freelance Whales really need an introduction? The New York based quintet has made some pretty huge splashes all around music blogs everywhere, and has been played in everything from Chuck to Starbucks ads, quite rightfully so too. The fusion of indie-pop, electro, and folk is undeniably catchy and good, and seems impossible to consider hating.

Taking the classic new wave hit “Girl U Want” by Devo, the band has made it into a gloriously relaxing track that is perfectly suited for these spring days. It makes me want to lean back in my chair, catch a few more rays of sunlight as the day progresses, and simply relax.

[Fresh] Junior Boys – ep

The last time we talked about the Ontario based Junior Boys was just before the release of their album Begone Dull Care. Despite receiving a lukewarm reception from most publications, I thought it was a decently well rounded album, and certainly worthy of a follow up. Enter It’s All True, the indie-electronic duo’s fourth studio album, and the home of this tremendous gem “ep.”

Personally, I have always compared the band/duo to LCD Soundsystem, but this track evokes something more. The synthesizer’s sound like they come straight out of Paul McCartney’s legendary “Wonderful Christmastime” which gives a cool sort of nostalgic feel to the whole track. The vocals are typical of Junior Boys, but the lyrics seem somehow sweeter than usual, and much more poignant. The track’s ability to evoke nostalgia is strong, and certainly enough to warrant a few listens, if only to walk down memory lane.

It’s All True comes out on June 13th through Domino Records.

[Electronic] Asura – “He Sees On Through Her” (Real)

Despite all of its craziness, you sort of have to love Los Angeles. Producer and electronic artist, Ryan York hails from that city of angels, and has given us the magnificent “He Sees On Through Her” (Real), which comes from his new album Unreleasables, which was—semi-ironically—released silently under the moniker of Asura on his BandCamp a few weeks ago.

One of the hardest things to recreate in electronic music is the organic and imperfect nature of non-computer generated audio, but it appears that Asura excels at this. The organic nature of “He Sees On Through Her” (Real) is what really pushes it beyond the barrier of typical electro, and into the outer reaches of brilliance. While the use of synthesizers is apparent, the drumbeats sound as pure as if they were made in the very same room you are in now. It’s rather human take on a predominantly machine environment, and it sounds brilliant.

[Electro] Apparat – Ash/Black Veil

Berlin-based electronic artist Apparat has been known to take you on a journey through each individual track. It’s through this skill and delicate touch in music that he created last year’s fantastic “Sayulita,” off his DJ-Kicks album. No stranger to extravagant crescendos and brilliant arrangements, Apparat created a new journey that he wants to share with all of you, and it’s called “Ash/Black Veil.”

The track hits you immediately with its looped strumming and delicate piano, but quickly evolves a good drumbeat and ghostly vocals. The track goes from a walk into a run, but much like Foals‘ slow-burner “Spanish Sahara,” as the track progresses, it hits a number of crescendos that practically lets it fly. It’s a gorgeous—possibly even epic—journey, “Ash/Black Veil,” and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

[Chillwave] School of Seven Bells – Babelonia (Sepalcure Remix)

School of Seven Bells has proven over the years that they are nothing but a solid dream-electro band. With the New York based band’s last album Disconnect From Desire, the group built upon their previous success and emerged an even stronger band in my opinion. Brooklyn based electro-artists and producers Sepalcure pulled the already chilly “Babelonia” from it, and threw it into a snow storm.

The remix, while not immediately danceable, is a perfect tune for those moments of intense working or coding. The beats—which are elegantly spaced out—occupy that brilliant line between house and chillwave, and perfectly add to the smooth, melodic synthesizers. It’s something almost completely different from it’s source material, and yet it manages to drag me gleefully into it’s chilly soundscape again and again.

[HOLY SHIT] Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi feat. Jack White – Two Against One

I’m fairly certain that neither Danger Mouse nor Jack White need any introduction. Since 2005, Danger Mouse has been collaborating with the fantastic Jack White, Norah Jones, and Italian composer Daniele Luppi to bring you a spaghetti-western inspired and fueled album entitled Rome. The quartet has clearly spent some time polishing this to perfection, and it shows magnificently in “Two Against One.”

While Norah Jones’ lovely vocals don’t make an appearance on the track, Jack White needs no aid in this absolutely delightful tribute to spaghetti-westerns. The arrangement is mercurial and would sound right at home sandwiched between two Ennio Morricone compositions. It’s a perfectly—and masterfully—realized track, and if it’s indicative to the quality of the rest of Rome, then it’s safe to say we have ourselves a masterpiece.

Rome will be released on May 17.

[Video] tUnE-yArDs – Bizness

A lot of things were said about tUnE-yArDs’ 2009 debut album, most of which overwhelmingly positive, and with good reason. Lead singer, and front-woman for the project, Merrill Garbus has some amazing vocal qualities, and her arrangements have never ceased to impress me. The same is true for her latest entry “Bizness” off of her upcoming album, w h o k i l l.

The song is instantly likable with an assortment of brilliant synths and beats. By the time the lead vocals get brought into the track you’re already so far in love with the track that they merely add onto the brilliance. “Bizness”—much like the video above—is an exceptionally bold and colorful track that encourages more silliness and dancing than I could ever possibly imagine alone. I invite you all to join me in joyful dance.

w h o k i l l, tUnE-yArDs’ sophomore album, will be released April 19th through 4AD.
