[NEW] Miguel – Bennie And The Jets (Feat. Wale) (Elton John Cover)

Miguel feat. Wale
Bennie and the Jets

In order to celebrate the anniversary of his landmark album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, music legend Elton John is preparing to release a deluxe edition of the timeless project over 40 years later. Along with a 100-page hardcover book, a CD of live performances, and a DVD of the 1973 film Elton John and Bernie Taupin Say Goodbye to Norma Jean and Other Things, fans can also expect the repackaging to include a tribute CD that features nine other accomplished artists tasked with providing a modern take on a few of the album’s classics.

The first of these commissioned covers comes from the unlikely duo of Miguel and Wale, who take more than a few liberties with their revision of “Bennie And The Jets.” While remnants of the original remain, Miguel adds his own flair to the redesign, complete with a roaring backbeat, potent guitar riffs, and peerless falsetto that stay true to the contemporary crooner’s typical style. Wale meanwhile, chips in with a smooth verse of his own (one that Chance The Rapper would be very proud of) that really helps provide this version of the single with its own identity.

Set for release next Tuesday, March 25th, the record will also include covers from Fall Out Boy, Ed SheeranEmeli Sandé and more. Pre-orders can be found here.

[Chill/Pop] Roosevelt – Small Hours (John Martyn Cover)

Roosevelt
Small Hours

Cologne upstart Roosevelt has been a blip on our ambitious radar for over a year, notably behind this writer’s favorite EP of 2013 Elliot, but today he’s peeled back yet another layer of production prowess, offering a smooth cover of John Martyn’s 1977 classic “Small Hours” which begs the attention of an entire blogosphere. Roosevelt cuts the original running time down significantly, routing his cover with a syrupy sweet downtempo melody and a focus on perhaps one of the most beautiful chorus line we’ve consumed in eons. “Keep on Lovin’ while your love is strong/Keep on lovin’ til your love is gone…away” may be simplistic on paper, but such a highly emotive vocal sang by Roosevelt stirred our pot in the perfect direction and adds an entire new dimension of depth to the ambient original. “Small Hours” is being pushed as a single on Joe Goddard’s tastemaking imprint Greco-Roman, and judging by the fact that we adore most anything from their camp, we were plenty excited that they were the genius music minds behind its release. So stream Roosevelt’s cover of “Small Hours” above, slink back somewhere comfy and let this absolutely gorgeous tune point you in the right direction.

MovesLikeMsJackson-coveraret

A lot of speculations around this flawless Cover of Outkast, but we finely have an official confirmation from the none other than Pete Tong. Some were saying this could have been Disclosure, so that’s saying a lot of the caliber of this new sensation ZHU. It’s safe to say that everything this guy touches turns to gold, and we can’t wait for more releases. Just in case you missed his most recent Original release “Superfriends”, take a listen. Cheers.

'81 (Joanna Newsom cover)

As we slowly waltz through the winter months, bundled up with the simple pleasures in life, we’re warmly comforted by our favorite music, softly carrying us to a sunnier, more embraceable time. Something about the familiar lyrics help ease the bitter cold, whether we’re willing to admit it or not.

Marika Hackman certainly knows this, consistently providing listeners with words easily associated with and fondly appreciated time and time again. When she’s not providing her own lyrics, she’s busy covering another notable harp-adorned female storyteller, which is what we have for you today.

Hailing out of the UK, February Resident Marika Hackman has graced us with the pleasure of premiering her live accoustic cover of the ever-so-talented harpist, Joanna Newsom. In this take on “’81″, we’re immediately ready to head to the “Garden of Eden” with Marika, as she calmly reinterprets this folk classic.

Drunk In Love (The Weeknd Remix)

Just when we thought we were done with the remixes, this happens. In honor of his 24th year on this earth, The Weeknd decided to celebrate the only way he knows how: by dropping his own rendition of “Drunk In Love.” In true Abel fashion, the Canadian crooner replaces the intoxication of the original with his typical musings about drug use and debauchery. With a completely original beat and fresh lyrics, The Weeknd furthers the concept of the record through his own inspiration, bringing the song to a whole different level. Grab a free download of the single above, and make sure to send your birthday wishes Abel’s way.

[Gorgeous] Laurel – Crazy (Patsy Cline Cover)

Laurel
Crazy (Patsy Cline Cover)

One thing we love about holidays is the influx of themed releases, covers and remixes that come out in perfect harmony with that day. Valentine’s Day has presented us with some soulful gems, including this gorgeous interpretation of the overwhelmingly classic tune “Crazy,” from country music legend Patsy Cline.

UK based indie vocalist Laurel has not only paid tribute to one of the most recognizable American classics out there, but she reinvented this 1961 gem with immaculate class and respect. The woeful sorrow is still very much present, as it is in the original, yet we’re brought into this century with a light spattering of synthesized drums, echoing piano keys, and classic movie samples.

We would be remiss to not talk about the flawlessness of Laurel’s vocals. In a cinematic swelling of haunting sentiment, Laurel has us wondering if this song had personal meaning to her, as her raw emotions are left in front of the listener, with unabashed honesty.
