[Mashup/Cover] Noosa – Live For/From Time (The Weeknd & Drake Cover)

Noosa
Live For/From Time mash-up (Drake, The Weeknd)

We already know what you’re thinking, so before you roll your eyes hear us out first. Yes, this is yet another Drake cover, and yes, it’s unlike anything you’ve heard before. Bringing us the cure for the average Drake cover is Noosa, who blends together a wonderful medley of Drizzy and Jhené Aiko‘s “From Time” with The Weeknd‘s “Live For.” What we have here is nothing short of beautiful, as the brilliant songstress weaves together a delightful masterpiece that finds a cool balance between the esoteric lows and ebullient highs of both songs. The talented Mickey Valen provides a sprawling landscape for Noosa to thrive in, with swelling synths and gorgeous piano riffs that compliment her delicately airy vocals perfectly. You can listen to the breathtaking track above, or catch a glimpse of the astounding live rendition below. Either way, you’re guaranteed be left speechless.

Hold On We're Going Home (Drake Cover)

We’re going to be honest with you. We’ve heard more interpretations of Drake’s “Hold On We’re Going Home” than Peyton Manning has heard condolences. It’s been one of the most remixed and covered tunes in the past year, and it’s not hard to see why. While we’ve braved through a veritable onslaught of medicore takes on our neighbor to the north, this tune stands proudly amongst the mire.

17 year old Brisbane native Vancouver Sleep Clinic has gracefully adorned our humble blog walls before, giving us warm-n-fuzzies with his glorious vocals in “Collapse.” This time around, he’s partnered with an someone we’re unfamiliar with, GXNXVS.

The end result is a smoother than silk, icy cold, yet smoking hot cover of this widely popular Drake tune. It’s downright enchanting, begging to be listened to over and over again. Take a listen, and try not to hit repeat.

[NEW] Ellie Gouding – Life Round Here (Feat. Angel Haze) (Prod. Noah Breakfast)

Ellie Goulding
Life Round Here (Feat. Angel Haze)

When James Blake released his Chance The Rapper assisted remix to “Life Round Here,” late last year, we assumed that would be the ultimate version of the single that we’d hear. Then again, we never expected a team up quite like this. Covering a James Blake song is certainly no easy task, but this revamped crew consisting of Ellie Goulding, Angel Haze and Noah Breakfast, give the original a run for its money, rebuilding the track completely from the ground up. Crafting a dense, ambient instrumental for the ladies to play with, Noah opts for a sounds that’s arguably far more melancholic than Blake’s forerunner. Ellie’s vocals float through the track almost aimlessly, yet they still feel purposeful as they lead in to a fierce verse from Angel Haze. Stream the single above, and let us know which version is your true favorite.

[Cover] Fade Into You – Mansions on the Moon (Mazzy Star Cover)

Fade Into You
Mazzy Star x Mansions On The Moon

Many times when something one loves from the past is brought up to the present day through another artist’s vision, it can leave that certain something feeling slightly tarnished or altogether compromised. So when we heard one of our favorite groups of the moment, Mansions on the Moon, took on the steep task of re-imagining  the folk meets drug induced psychedelia of Santa Monica’s Mazzy Star and their 1993 Top-40 crossover “Fade Into You” (another quintessential favorite of us Ninjas from the past) it was met with a slight air of skepticism. All of that superfluous reluctance, however, was easily subdued when the opening four chords of MotM’s stripped  down cover reverberated through our in-house monitors. Ted Wendler gives us his best Hope Sandoval impersonation, lightly pulling back on his typical soaring incantations in favor of a more restrained vocal style, and comes out on top of the defiant challenge. Gone is Mansions’ highly electronicized sound, instead favoring only one acoustic guitar for the majority of the tune until an enchanting climax is met with a shuffling shaker and serene back up vocal contributions. This all results in a moment that feels considerably bigger than it actually is. Let Mansions on the Moon’s cover of “Fade Into You”  take you back to your first middle school makeout session, and grab the free download above.

Fossil Collective – Do You Realize (The Flaming Lips cover) [TMN PREMIERE]

Fossil Collective
Do You Realize (The Flaming Lips cover)

Coming hot off the heels of their breathtaking EP, The Water EP, Leeds based indie folk duo Fossil Collective are offering up their take on the legendary track, “Do You Realize.” The original tune, crafted by Grammy Award winning The Flaming Lips, is one of the more lyrically significant songs of the 2000’s, in our opinion. Wayne Coyne has a real knack for crafting thought provoking words.

The original psych-rock nature of the song has faded away, and in its place it’s clean guitar strums. Haunting vocal harmonies demonstrate the delicate folk nature in which Fossil Collective have made a name for themselves. Coupled with the powerful lyrics, Jonny Hooker and David Fendick’s vocals simply give us the chills.

This cover, released to celebrate their new EP, is one of our favorites as of late. Make sure you check out the EP, and snag “Do You Realize,” when you’re done.

Do You Realize – that you have the most beautiful face?
Do You Realize – we’re floating in space?
Do You Realize – that happiness makes you cry?
Do You Realize – that everyone you know someday will die?
