We booked our flights. We booked our house. Our cameras are packed, and our Music Ninja shirts are laundered, pressed and ready for full on desert festival action. Yes, we’re going to make the pilgrimage deep into the California desert for what is set to be one of the most amazing musical weekends ever. We’ll be tweeting, instagraming and facebooking. Make sure to stay tuned.
[Beautiful] Kishi Bashi – A Sunday Smile (Beirut Cover)
Multi-instrumentalist Kishi Bashi reminds us how beautiful Beirut‘s “A Sunday Smile” is with this amazing orchestral cover. So much yearning, so much feeling, so many sadly singing strings. Take a momentary breather from the beats, the guitars, the aggression and the rage.
Florence + The Machine also covered Beirut.
The Neighbourhood – Say My Name/Cry Me A River (Radio1 Live Lounge)
Yeah, you’re reading that title right. The Neighbourhood stopped by BBC Radio 1 and dropped this excellent rendition/mashup of Destiny Child‘s “Say My Name” and Justin Timberlake‘s “Cry Me A River”. It’s a silky smooth and downtempo take on the 2000s radio pop hits and we sure can’t help but love the darker, “playin’ it cool” vibes. These cats know what’s up. Tune in below.
[Soul] Jessie Ware – What You Won’t Do For Love (Cover) (Prod. by Sampha)
London-based songstress Jessie Ware uses her smooth, sultry electro-soul sound to breathe new life into “What You Won’t Do For Love”. A classic R&B track originally released in the late ’70s by Bobby Caldwell, it’s been covered and sampled many times over within the hip-hop world by folks like Mary J. Blige, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Mariah Carey. Ware’s cover, like much of the music found on her excellent debut album Devotion, is emotional and nostalgic, yet still maintains a very modern and stylish feel. Listen below.
This came out some time ago online, but this week the cover is part of the Future Classic x Laneway Festival series. Future Classic will be hosting their own stage at St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival, and to celebrate, each week they’re releasing a track from one of their performers.
“What You Won’t Do For Love” is also included on Ware’s new If You’re Never Gonna Move EP, out now.

Tegan & Sara – Fool To Cry (Rolling Stones Cover) (Prod. by RAC)
Tegan and Sara, one of our favorite sisterly pop duos, do a beautiful rendition of The Rolling Stones‘ “Fool To Cry”. The cover, which was produced by RAC, is off the soundtrack for HBO’s hit series Girls. Seeing as the show’s second season premieres this weekend, and the group’s new LP, Heartthrob, drops January 29th, this is pretty perfect timing for all the parties involved. Check it out below!
[Soul] Mikky Ekko – Chained (The xx Cover)
Soulful crooner and relative newcomer Mikky Ekko stopped by Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show and covered The xx‘s subtle and somber Coexist track “Chained”. It’s still very much a tragic, heartbreaking song, but Mikky really makes it his own with this rendition, inserting runs and shifting octaves throughout. In a way, it’s almost unrecognizable, an entirely separate R&B ballad, and this is hardly a bad thing. In addition to glimpsing his creativity, we get yet another taste of his smooth, smooth vocals. We heard it on his breakout single “Pull Me Down” (produced by Clams Casino), but this cover in particular puts his voice front-and-center, and it’s beautiful.
