[Amazing Acoustic] Josh Kumra – Wildest Moments (Jessie Ware Cover)

A self-taught musician who picked up his first guitar at the tender age of three, Josh Kumra is a young new artist brimming with unimaginable talent. Based out of Swindon, a small town in the UK, he borrows from indie, acoustic and blues for music that’s impressively delicate, while still emotionally gripping. The highlight of his songs is his amazing voice. Smokey, rough and with a little tremble, it carries so much weight, conveys so much feeling — as though he’s holding up the world’s pain in every note. Here, Kumra takes on Jessie Ware‘s phenomenal power ballad “Wildest Moments,” stripping it down to a very basic, but very soulful and moving acoustic rendition.

Josh Heinrichs – Set Fire To The Rain feat. Stick Figure (Adele Cover)

Josh Heinrichs, former frontman of Jah Roots, puts quite the twist on Adele’s “Set Fire To Rain”. He not only wraps it in his unique, muscular croon but the ballad gets a lively breath of real reggae grooves. The cover, which was produced by Stick Figure, does not lose its passion, however; its slow, slightly dramatic bounce alongside Heinrich’s aching vocals still makes for a more than convincing love song.

[Chill] Postiljonen – How Will I Know/All That We Had Is Lost (Whitney Houston Cover)

The best part about scouring the internet and devouring music all day like a rabid beast is discovering that diamond in the rough. Here is one such gem. The ’80s R&B-pop anthem by Whitney Houston gets slowed down to a chill, dreamy electro track. It moves along so leisurely and tenderly, it sounds as though it’s floating away, off to some ethereal atmosphere. By entirely downplaying the power ballad and stripping it of its pop flash, mysterious Swedish trio Postiljonen turn it into a real heartbreaker as they elevate, emphasize and embrace the song’s emotional sentiment. Angus Stone – True Colors (Cyndi Lauper Cover)

Pretty sure the original version of “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper hit the airwaves just before I was born. It’s a tune I grew up with and because it’s one of those ’80s classics forever embedded in your mind — tagged specifically with Lauper’s unique vocals — it’s difficult to hear it done any other way. But somehow Australian singer-songwriter Angus Stone (who we’ve covered before) makes it possible, effortless and enjoyable, turning the song into an ultra cool, wooing, folky-blues track.

Florence + The Machine – Postcards From Italy (Beirut Cover)

This came out quite awhile ago, but some songs are timeless — give them to us weeks, months, years later and they still resonate, and maybe even more so. Beirut, an indie group that combines folk, Eastern European influences, and orchestral-rock, is simply amazing at what they do and they only grow better with each and every release they put out (there are too many to count). The somber, yet beautiful “Postcards From Italy” is off their debut album Gulag Orkestar, which came out in 2006. Here, eclectic powerhouse Florence + The Machine tackle it rather impressively. Though the cover is far more sparse than the original, it still holds onto the deep-seated sentimentality, while also adding incredible vocal work. Download it below!

[Indie] Coves – Wicked Game (Chris Isaak Cover)

UK-based duo Coves take Chris Isaak‘s ’80s rootsy hit “Wicked Game” and shroud it in dark shadows that seem to scream creepy love. It’s very much a hypnotizing rendition, complete with a fuzzy, psychedelic fogginess that sprawls and permeates throughout the entire track. Ellie Goulding – Some Nights (fun. cover, radio rip)

While on BBC’s Radio 1 this morning, the endlessly talented Ellie Goulding covered fun.’s hit “Some Nights”. By adding her wonderfully distinct and airy vocals, she’s made the already anthemic single more uplifting, graceful, and unsurprisingly, has turned it into a very interesting rendition. It’s not the most polished, obviously, given that it was done live, but still a must listen! Check out the radio rip below.
