[Indie] Feed Me Jack – Twice (Little Dragon Cover)

’Feed Me Jack – Twice (Little Dragon Cover)’
’Feed Me Jack – Reelin’ In The Years (Steely Dan Cover)’

As they prepare to release their upcoming EP, Oakland-based Feed Me Jack put out a phenomenal collection of covers last night. With Little DragonSteely DanWeezer and more included, the 5-track project showcases Feed Me Jack’s experimental indie rock and versatile musicianship to perfection. As with all great covers, the songs are complete re-imaginations that take each song to unique and exciting places.

Their take on Little Dragon’s “Twice,” our personal favorite, starts similarly to the original utilizing a beautiful acoustic backing, but around the 1-minute mark expands on that initial melody falling into a blissful guitar jam. It’s the type of song that only gets better the longer you listen–after repeating the chorus it once again erupts into a gorgeously composed outro. Feed Me Jack’s take on Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ in the Years,” another stand-out, transforms the original into an airy, guitar-layered jam session mixed in with flawless horns. Add in some goofy ad-libs, and it captures FMJ’s breezy quirkiness making for a completely different listen than the classic original.

It’s interesting hearing a young band like FMJ, who’s musicianship gives them freedom to take on endless sonic endeavors, truly establishing a sound. It’s even more intriguing that they’re able to do so while covering other artists’ music. Feed Me Jack are currently working on originals for their next EP, which they expect to drop in August. Based on some of the experimentation we’re hearing on this project, we really can’t wait for what they have in store. You can pick up the full covers EP over at their Bandcamp page for free and check out our interview with them from a few months back here.

[Electronica] Nicole & Zuri – 21 Questions (50 Cent Cover)

It’s no easy feat to choose an untouchable hip-hop classic like ’21 Questions’ as the basis for an experimental cover, but two talented women in the Australian electronic scene have turned an unlikely scenario into a success that is so damn satisfying. Nicole Millar of Peking Duk’s ‘High’ fame and the forward-thinking Zuri Akoko have combined their unique skills to flip the iconic lyrics and breathe a fresh perspective onto a track that others would dare not try and touch. The allure of this version comes in their ability to take inspiration from the song’s underlying emotion and craft an interpretation that lets them speak through their own artistic strengths. The sultry vocals of Nicole meld with the hauntingly beautiful atmosphere of Zuri’s sound to create a piece of music that will seduce your ears into instant obsession.

It’s just one of a series of gorgeous covers recently from the pair, with similarly enchanting adaptations of Shlohmo and Mya rounding out this incredible showcase of musical prowess. No doubt you’ll be craving for more of these in the near future once you’ve peeped all three below.

We Were Evergreen – Be Like You (WS Remix) [TMN PREMIERE]

Some of you might be too young to remember this overwhelmingly infectious song from the iconic Disney movie, The Jungle Book. However, it’s safe to assume that for a few decades, kids across the world were dancing around, singing Louis Prima’s memorable lyrics.

Today we not only have an intriguing interpretation of “Be Like You,” we’re also offered up a remix to accompany it. The original comes via French indie pop outfit, We Were Evergreen, who has graced the pages of this blogs numerous times before. This time around, we’re pleasantly enveloped in this newly released cover, which you can pre-order here.

We love the swirling percussions and vocal fragments repeated over delicate piano textures, making the track both danceable and intimate.- We Were Evergreen
’Be Like You’

Enter remixer WS, who has sculpted vocal samples in a way to where it almost seems as if they were destined for an electronic interpretation. Stepping in stride with the original ideation of the song, this remix focuses strongly on percussion, providing a worldly sound to accompany the twinkling piano keys and ethereal synths.

Like any classics, it’s always tricky to touch a masterpiece. But as WWE took this song to its darkest side, I thought why not emphasizing the somber chords progression and the jungle percussion vibe, and try to take it to the dancefloor.

While he remains mysterious, WS has a bevy of unreleased remixes he’s holding onto, all of which will be made public soon. Rumor has it, he’s also working on original EP as well, so be sure to stay tuned for that come 2016.

[Acoustic] Rae Sremmurd – No Type (Xavier Dunn Cover)

No Type (Xavier Dunn Cover)

Rae Sremmurd‘s “No Type” is widely regarded as one of the hottest club hits. It’s one of those songs that everyone sings along to, even if you initially hated it. With that said, we are utterly surprised by Xavier Dunn‘s cover and how he managed to completely flip the tune and gave it an pure acoustic treatment.

Delicate guitar kick off the tune with a tranquil vibe, and Xavier’s well-crafted vocals are adding colors to the original lyrics. The chorus is definitely the spotlight of the track, as Xavier utilizes some harmonies of his falsetto melodies and simple drums to support the lengthy buildup. You’d be amazed by how entertaining and well the track flows. Who would’ve thought an acoustic version of the controversial tune would works wonders?

The Australian musician is a master when it comes to changing up songs. Make sure to grab a free download if you dig it or click here. We’re sure Xavier has a lot more tricks up his sleeves, as he constantly provides us with quality music.

[Piano Session] Mario – Let Me Love You (Jack Garratt Cover)

As we continue on our month of Jack Garratt’s residency, we’re continually reminded why we’ve developed a sincere adoration for this UK-based musician. Today continues our ever-growing infatuation, as we get a glimpse at an entirely new side of this quickly-rising star.

Set against the backdrop of nothing more than powerfully cascading piano chords, we’re offered an intimate listen at the simplistic beauty and raw musical finesse from Garratt. Showing some love for the early 2000’s R&B hit “Let Me Love You,” we’re instantly taken away to another place, being helplessly consumed with each memorable lyric.

Originally played at Huw Stephens BBC Radio 1 show at SXSW, this cover (originally sung by Mario), accompanied a piano ballad-style version of his  song “The Love You’re Given.” If you’re unfamiliar with that one, take a gander at the original version below.
