[Concert Preview/Denver-Boulder Giveaway] RÜFÜS DU SOL, Option4, and Hermitude – 10/15 – Fox Theatre

RÜFÜS / RÜFÜS DU SOL
We Left (Night Version)

Us Denver Ninjas are getting pretty dang excited for next Wednesday’s Fox Theatre show in Boulder, CO. The bill showcases one of Australia’s single most coveted musical exports, and one of TMN’s favorite acts in the entire electronic and indie landscape, RÜFÜS DU SOL who are bringing their entire live act for one of the most anticipated concerts on our agendas to round out 2014. The Aussie trio combine the spectacle of live instrumentation with a keen pop sensibility and dance undertones to hone a sound that has thrust them into international spotlight over the last few years. With singles like “Desert Night”, “Take Me”, official remixes for The Presets and most recently ZHU, as well as a pending debut long-player, Atlas; the indie-dance triumvirate have begun to bubble over into more mainstream consciousness during perhaps their richest musical stretch in the band’s short history. Further rounding out the card is another TMN favorite, Denver house maestro option4, who has become a serious mainstay here over the last year behind a jacking, soulful and unique take on house music, including his most recent debut on Fool’s Gold Records; and rounding out the evening is fellow Australians Hermitude who will undoubtedly pace the night wonderfully with their blend of instrumental, hip-hop infused electronicism.

Of course, we wouldn’t just tell you all about a show and not get our awesome readers involved. So we’re giving away a pair of tix through another contest! [House] Sammy Bananas – Money Time feat. Antony & Cleopatra (option4 Remix)

Sammy Bananas
Money Time feat. Antony & Cleopatra (Option4 Remix)

It’s always such a thrill for us at TMN when an artist we’ve been following from the ground up starts receiving the critical support for which we believe was due from the beginning. After an impressive 2013 and start to 2014, which included founding the digital Night Supply imprint, singles on the hallowed Nurvous Records, and absurdly viral remixes for Great Good Fine OK and Elizabeth Rose; Denver’s option4 makes a soulfully jacking debut on one of the biggest electronic tastemaking labels in existence, Fool’s Gold, by re-visioning Sammy Bananas’ “Money Time”. As with much of his back catalog, option4 paints a vibrant, deep and jacking U.K. house shine onto Bananas’ original; resulting in a tune armed with more than enough dark funky lacquer to incite a dancefloor storm. This one’s coming out as part of Sammy Bananas’ Money Time EP package, which dropped today through iTunes. Snag a copy here, and since you’ve made it this far, get your boogie onto option4’s remix above.

[Deep-House] Stuart Software, Gibson & Glover Feat. Rob James – Keep On

Stuart Software, Gibson & Glover Feat.Rob James
Keep On (SectionZ Fresh Friday) [Free Download]

As our Tuesday afternoon lingers on, some  of Ninjas are still left with visions of dancefloors teeming with beautiful, sweaty masses and basically blowing the steam off from last weekend. And what better way to kick that feeling into gear than with a little bit of quality, club-driven deep-house. “Keep On” from budding dance producers Stuart Software and Gibson & Glover popped up on our Soundcloud feed this morning via a well timed repost, albeit about a week after this one’s official release, but the moment we ran through it once; we knew it was a perfect cut for a blustery Tuesday. Vocalist Rob James lends a gorgeous helping of reverberations to this one while the prosperous pairing of Software and Gibson & Glover paint a chunky, U.K. club, deep groove onto the movement; producing a track we’ll be soundtracking our pre-games to this coming weekend. Not much information is available thus far on all three artists, but you can snag the track here on Bandcamp as a “name your price” download. Kick your afternoon into gear and let this one ride through your favorite and loudest listening medium.

[Deep/Tropical-House] Ben Sollee – Letting Go (Thomas Jack Remix)

Ben Sollee
Letting Go (Thomas Jack Remix)

It’s been a bit since we’ve featured one of our favorite burgeoning artists and one of the leading faces of these laid back Tropical House vibes which have so heavily been permeating dance blogs everywhere, Thomas Jack, and the moment we heard the opening bars of his latest remix we knew our Ninjas had to get on the train as well. Taking form behind a punchy kick-line, stabby violin progression and actual self-recorded waves from the beaches of Tulum, Jack’s revisioning of Ben Sollee strays a bit from what has become his signature tropical sound of modulated pan flutes and airy synths, rather opting for a deeper, longing and almost melancholy atmosphere this time around. Thomas Jack continues to be one of the few electronic artists constantly pushing their sound forward, which is also the reason we’ve found ourselves writing about most everything that emanates from his pristine catalog. It’s hard to imagine the Australian wunderkind will be giving away his music for free for much longer so get on it, grab the free download from his Facebook page, sit back, and let those lush, chilled, housey vibes wash over you.

[Deep-House] The Internet – Dontcha (Need & Necessity Edit)

The Internet
Dont'cha (Need & Necessity Edit)

On paper, matching the smooth soul sounds of Odd Future offshoot The Internet with a forward thinking house beat sounds like a match made in dance-head heaven. As to why we haven’t seen more of it, we’re not exactly sure, but Denver based house duo Need & Necessity have taken all the trouble out of the job and come through with one of their most accessible, catchy edits yet. Coming off of “This Life”, their last original recording, Need & Necessity’s take on “Dontcha” carries with it a rare playability. Whether it’s casually jamming out in your car or on a booming club stack this one has the type of shiny appeal to touch the most ardent of house fans to casual listeners alike. A loungey, almost jazz club vibe is upped through the malleable execution of a rolling, deep bass line which rides along infectiously under The Internet’s sultry original vocal, resulting in a polished dance tune that we’ve been religiously looping all afternoon. The boys are giving this one away for free through their Facebook, so go ahead and snag a download here; and if you missed our group interview with them back in April, check it out.

[Deep-House/Garage] Arches – Want You [TMN Premiere]

Arches
Want You

Arches, the incredible pairing of Sebastiaan Vandevoorde (better known as Moonlight Matters)and Sound of Stereo‘s Jochen Sablon, have begun bubbling into mainstream consciousness at exactly the perfect time for their intellectual brand of house music to be consumed by the masses. The Belgian dance duo is back with a brand new single effort after “There’s A Place”, their debut record with Columbia, which was received remarkably well critically, while netting them a substantial bit of merited buzz in the process. This afternoon, we have the utmost pleasure of premiering their latest, soon to be viral club hit “Want You” and we couldn’t be more entranced by their precise production prowess. Included on The Magician‘s latest Magic Tape, which seem to have taken on a life of their own and become a huge ground for new, incredible tunes to surface from; “After You” finds Arches clearly sending this one out to a sweaty dancefloor. The tune’s foggy synth work leads a low-end fueled piano melody and jacking house vibe into a driving groove for a track that is top-to-bottom one of the most succinct and well thought out dance cuts we’ve heard throughout the entirety of 2014. Try not to wiggle those hips and bob your head while listening, we dare you. And while you’re getting your bounce on, pick up a free download here.

[Album Review/Stream] Lincoln Jesser – Modern Color

Much of today’s musical release climate is permeated by a steady influx of gigantic marketing campaigns behind singles, the occasional EP, and everything in between. Sadly, the disappearance of countless independent labels over the past 15  or so years has left this writer’s favorite release format, the long player, as somewhat of a novelty and a major gamble for smaller artists not signed to a major. So when one of our favorite rising sons of synth; indie-pop architect, Lincoln Jesser, announced the impending release of a debut LP, Modern Color, we were all ears on deck. To see such quality and a clear conceptual path put forth into an album format in 2014 without the backing of at least some type of indie is refreshing to say the least. Bending a bevy of electronic pop buoyed with a slick indie sensibility has been the auditory bait for more than a few of us Ninjas, as Jesser has become a regular amongst the pages of TMN over the past year through singles like “We’ll Be Fine”, “Wicked Son”, “Untold” (both of which can be found on Modern Color), “After_Love” and he’s put together quite the diverse, but focused collection of tunes to create his debut album.

Kicking off with an atmospheric, saccharine slice of indie-pop on “We’ll Be Fine”, Modern Color quickly highlights its superlative attributes through its opening tune: hooky, modulated synth lines and Jesser’s penetrating incantations. While “We’ll Be Fine”, a pop song in pure form, paces the LP; much of Jesser’s musical perspective on this one comes in the form of slower burning fragments. Tracks like “Untold”, and “Supertouch” provide an insightful glimpse into Jesser’s more emotive musical outlook on which Modern Color’s most poignant moments take place. But without the LP’s poppy respites on cuts like “Tops” & “Certainty” -which both dip into club-house territory along a flowing four-four kick and minimal electro house vibrations- and “Wicked Son”; those moments don’t feel like they’d come across as impactful. Modern Color closes its doors on the heels of two previously unreleased tunes, “Rolling Stones” and “Time Apart”; and both are an incredible close to a very worthy debut entry into the album form from Lincoln Jesser.

Modern Color is out now digitally and can be purchased on the cheap through iTunes, and for such a well thought out LP inauguration, we think it’s completely worth the squeeze. Stream Lincoln Jesser’s Modern Color below in its entirety
