[Indie-Dance/Disko] The Juan Maclean – A Simple Design

The Juan Maclean
A Simple Design

Some labels just manage to carry a weight with them when uttered: in that regardless of who or what is being released people take notice. So when anything from indie-dance imprint DFA bubbles to the surface, we tend to take notice. And what better way to revisit one of our favorite labels than with one of the cornerstones which helped solidify their status as indie icon; The Juan Maclean. The long time DFA staple is ready to release another full LP on September 16, In A Dream, and have brought with them the second single from the album in the form of “A Simple Design”. A moody groover which rides the line between new-wave and darker disko, the tune once again features full time The Juan Maclean member Nancy Whang (of LCD Soundsystem acclaim) front and center. Her effortless vocal stems glide throughout John Maclean’s expansive, spacey dance vibes like never before, consummately fueling a hypnotic hip shaker of a melody. You can preorder In A Dream from iTunes, but for now we’ll be relishing in the beautiful dancefloor rumblings of “A Simple Design” to satiate our anticipation.

[Deep-House/Indie-Dance] Mark Morrison – Return of The Mack (SNBRN Remix) [TMN Premiere]

Mark Morrison
Return Of The Mack (SNBRN Remix)

Some artists seem to waltz into your life at exactly the correct time, armed with the exact stockpile of tunes to draw its listener in from the first exposure, all the way through their entire library of releases. While this observation may sound too good to be true to some, it has absolutely been the modus operandi of L.A. house purveyor SNBRN, who returns to TMN with yet another irresistible twist on a classic. Already credited with clubby underground alterations of Ace of Base and 50 Cent, SNBRN has reshaped Mark Morrison’s genre staple “Return of The Mack” and brought it directly into deep-house waters. While certainly not a newbie to the deeper sound kits, SNBRN’s bassline is as chunky as ever, coalescing superbly with Mark Morrison’s soulful R&B vocal track which coats the tune with a sublime ratio of sexy and grimy. SNBRN’s clear influence from classic house doesn’t go unfiltered either as he’s painted his high end with a garage leaning hi-hat shuffle to go along with a classic piano line à la Marshal Jefferson circa 1986 (which if you know your history, is a pretty damn good thing to be reminded of in dance music). It seems SNBRN has appealed to every ounce of our proper house brain brilliantly this time around; and had this to say about his latest remix: “So, I’m back up in the game…with a brand new remix of one of my all time favorite songs. There hadn’t been a remix in years and decided to give this thee old SNBRN touch. With tons of live instruments and a nice warm bassline this track is sure to keep you dancing from the pool to the club all summer long. You can bet that’s exactly what we’ll be doing over the next few months.

[Chill/Disco] Goldroom – Till Sunrise ft. Mammals

Goldroom
Till Sunrise

The way So-Cal dance-producer-turned-live act Goldroom approached the release of “Till Sunrise” was nothing short of inspiring. By now within most relevant electronic communities, Goldroom has become somewhat of a household name; and with every passing release, it would be quite simple to pick a handful of big name artists to author remixes and pocket a nice penny or two. But, rather than that extremely tired formula, the entire stem package was given away for free weeks ago, allowing any artist with a pirated copy of Ableton to try their hands at an official remix before anyone had even had a chance to hear it. We’ve heard great revisions already from names like MyKill and Justin Faust, which truly only stoked our proverbial fire before its concrete release today. But alas, it is Goldroom’s original tune which of course surpasses anything else done with the song. A wave of soft synth and airy pads give life to the track’s two-steppy stride of a melody before  Mammals’ breathy vocal incantations take their seat as our focal point. Goldroom’s slowed down brand of dance plays as luminous as ever, immediately taking our subconscious to late night rooftop parties and beach side soirees with our best friends; which is something we’ve almost come to expect from the multi-faceted dance creator. This one is about to go viral, so be a few steps ahead and stream “Till Sunrise”, which is out now on Binary, above. Trust us, it’s the most perfect Monday tune you’ll have listened to in months.

[Festival Review] TMN Dives Into Denver’s Underground Music Showcase

If you’re wondering whether or not Colorado’s music scene is embodied solely by bass-heavy barons devastating Red Rocks on a regular basis, or the constant national and international accolades given to Beta Nightclub year after year, you can stop that right now. While much of the Mile High City’s music scene’s notoriety falls into those two aforementioned venues, The UMS flexed it’s mighty indie muscle two weekends ago, showing the city, the state, the nation, and the world that a handful of tiny venues deserves just as much attention.

Taking over one of Denver’s most prized neighborhoods, The UMS flooded the numerous dive bars, galleries, and restaurants that adorn the colorful South Broadway stretch. In a meticulous blend of some well known acts coupled with hyper-indie (so indie, even the hippest of your friends haven’t heard about them yet) there was more than enough to appease the auditory appetite of the thousands of festival goers that flooded the streets.

Knowing that there was too much music for one ninja to cover, we had to break up The UMS between two from our clan. Check out what Matty and Clayton experienced during their first full experience of this must-attend event.

While we couldn’t yet make it out in full force to the first night of Denver’s incredible Underground Music Showcase, we did manage to make it to one of our favorite electronic artist’s sets, with CRL CRRLL (pronounced Carl Carrell) at Blue Ice. An abbreviated set to say the least, CRL CRRLL managed to warp our minds through different texturized soundscapes played off of his bevy of machines, MIDI controllers and gadgets on stage through the 40 minute performance. This was the second time we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing him live, as he played our TMN presented show in Denver with Young & Sick (which if you haven’t heard his remix of their tune “Glass”, check it out below) and it seems in the short span of time, CRLCRRLL’s reached a more fluid, comfortable and mature stage presence.

[Future/Dance] Snoop Dogg – Sensual Seduction (Dr. Fresch Remix)

Snoop Dogg
Sensual Seduction (Dr. Fresch's #FutureSex Remix)

Dr. Fresch has been an artist with whom we’ve become a bit enamored with through a varied collection of original tunes and remixes which touch down on nearly every genre encasing the subterranean dance sector. This time around, the L.A. based electronic producer has revealed yet another wrinkle to his production game with a very forward thinking remix of the Snoop Dogg hit “Sensual Seduction”; which fuses together components of house (both deep and G), trap, 2-step, and disko laden synths to create something we’ve never before felt or heard. Rather than turning in a formulaic dance remix on this one, Dr. Fresch’s version tells a complete story taking us from the scooting melody and retooled, high pitch vocals through its climax of deep bass, pitched down Snoop rumblings and slight wobble to boot. It’s always exciting to see artists tap into their more creative sides, especially when it’s executed with the same finesse you’ve come to love them for in the first place. We’re surely not the only ones with a musical crush on Dr. Fresch either as he was just a part of Global Dance Festival’s Main Stage at the best venue in the world, glorious Red Rocks Amphitheater outside of Denver. We can’t wait for another shot at a set from Dr. Fresch, but until then, his tunes will have to hold us over. Stream the Dr. Fresch remix of “Sensual Seduction” above, grab the free download here and maybe slip into something a little more risque to feel the full vibe on this one.

[Synth/Dance-Pop] Mansions on the Moon – Somewhere Else Tonight

Mansions On The Moon
Somewhere Else Tonight

With So-Cal alt-pop troupe Mansions on the Moon‘s debut LP release right around the corner in October, our anticipation has been piquing towards the group like never before. A few weeks back, the tasteful pop purveyors dropped the first single from the album, “Don’t Tell”, and today they’re back with the latest offering from their impending self-titled long player: “Somewhere Else Tonight”. Whereas “Don’t Tell” rode a more subdued dance melody, “Somewhere Else Tonight” feels much more aimed towards the dancehall than almost anything we’ve covered from MotM in the past. Their cadence rides more agile and quick than most anything within their library thus far, feeding on an expansive synth and perhaps our favorite vocalist in the entire indie landscape to bolster the tune’s entire sonic atmosphere. Speaking about “Somewhere Else Tonight”, the crafty ensemble of skilled musicians stated: “We wrote Somewhere Else Tonight during our first few months in Los Angeles.  The chorus was inspired by our move from East to West Coast .  After we wrote the verses, the lyrics became a metaphor, not only for getting out of one’s comfort zone but also for returning to a childlike, imaginative perspective towards mundane everyday life.” That inspirative vibe is absolutely felt with every kick, clap and synth stab contained in this four-minute pop stride, so do yourself a favor and feel it above.
