TJH87
Good Life Feat. Gamble & Burke (Original Mix)

There is absolutely nothing more fun than a groovy Nu-Disco tune to get you through the final hours of your monotonous day job. The weekend called and said it’s about that time we kick things off early, so why not do it with a new tune from TJH87? The Finnish duo teamed up with Gamble & Burke for their latest original, “Good Life”, to which my grandma even had something good to say about this funky disco jam.

This tune is jam packed with funk guitars, massive synths, and a bass to take you back to the OG Daft Punk days. We over here at TMN have had this one on repeat, so press play and let that figurative disco ball light up your cubicle while you get ready for a big weekend ahead. With HARD Summer mode in full gear, we promise that TJH87 will get you in the right mood to rage your butt’s off in the coming days. Stay golden, ninjas, and party hard.

TMN: Thank you so much for taking some time to answer a few questions for us! We really appreciate your time. Let’s kick things off by talking about your latest release. What can people come to expect from it?

My pleasure, I’m a big fan of Music Ninja!

My latest release is called “Higher”, which features vocals from the amazing Emil, who is the lead vocalist of Urban Cone! It’s a special tune for me, and the journey behind it has been long yet rich. It’s a simple and playful tune which could be described as Indie Disco.

[Nu-Disco/Soul-Pop] Body Language – Feel It [TMN Premiere]

Body Language
Feel It

Brooklyn based indie-disco purveyors Body Language first showed up on our radar all the way back in 2011 with their remix of Givers’ “Up Up Up”, again back in 2012 with “I’m a Mess” and last year through an impressive, disco-synth laden retooling of Great Good Fine OK’s “You’re The One For Me”. Today, the multi-faceted electronic quartet returns to TMN for the first time in 2014 with a funk fueled synth-pop listen, “Feel It” for an official TMN Premiere. The second single to drop off of an impending extended play Infinite Sunshine, due out August 12, “Feel It” takes shape under a rolling four-four kick and the kind of sprightly guitar riff you’d expect to hear penned by the legendary Nile Rodgers before bursting into a sun-ripened downtempo dance groover. Never have their chunky 80’s dance synths held such weight either, with an incredibly danceable lead synth and bass line wrapping the entire movement up with a lovely little bow, simultenously turning in one of our favorite original tunes from an intellectually danceable catalog. We’ve also gotten confirmation that Body Language is currently working on the follow up LP to 2013’s Grammar, which we can’t wait to wrap our ears around either. Stream “Feel It” above, and we’ll keep bringing you the Body Language heat leading up to the release of Infinite Sunshine in a few weeks.

[Event Review/Preview] Boatylicious 2014 + Christmas in July

A few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to go boogie the night away with the Take 2 Entertainment crew for the return of Boatylicious. After experiencing the ultimate dance party of the Summer, I was convinced that I would never want to attend another event that wasn’t on some sort of boat. Before the boat departed from the dock, everyone on board S.S. Boatylicious got their drinks and headed up to the top deck to check out the gorgeous view of Long Beach, CA. With Sam Hiller and Kid B. spinning in the background, I found myself grooving all the way around the boat until my cup was empty.

As the sun began to set, the music shifted from an ambient and smooth vibe into a more club-like atmosphere that had everyone up on their feet dancing the night away. With artists like Moon Boots, Yolanda Be Cool, The Interns, Sam Hiller, Kid B., aRod, and Ruby Sparks, I was bound to experience the best of the best beats of all time. I have never had the chance to see both Moon Boots or Yolanda Be Cool and Boatylicious gave me the opportunity to listen to my music idols and intimately connect with everyone on board. There were a couple of other artists that definitely made me turn my head multiple times throughout the night and I just want to give a big shout out to both Kid B. and Sam Hiller once again for setting the mood at the beginning of the night – those dudes sent me straight to funky town and i’m pretty sure I still haven’t returned. Overall, Take 2 Entertainment threw down a bitchin’ party and I could not have had a much better time than I did that night; plus, I was on boat with a bunch of beautiful people who genuinely love good music…who could say no to that opportunity?

After that successful night, Take 2 Entertainment decided to surprise us all with ANOTHER Boatylicious event that will be departing the docks to cruise along the Long Beach Harbor this Saturday, July 26th. With a ‘Christmas in July’ theme and a line-up to knock you overboard, it’s imperative that you make your way out to this side of town and experience something truly magical. Hitting the decks this time around are legendary producer/DJ’s: Viceroy, Jessie Andrews, Bones, Troy Kurtz, Hendo, Bees Knees, Kid B., Shae B, and Wilks Music. If Viceroy, Jessie Andrews, or Kid B. don’t give you enough incentive to buy a ticket, then maybe a little introduction to their music will make you think twice. If you didn’t take advantage the first time, then make sure you grab a spot on one of the party buses so you can party and stay safe all at once; trust us, it was well worth the extra few bucks!

If you want to experience the party of a lifetime, then hop aboard S.S. Boatylicious and grab your tickets here and make sure to check out the entire schedule on Take 2 Entertainments website for bus arrivals and departures!

Here are a few songs from some of my personal favorite artists on this weekend’s line-up.

Viceroy:

’Viceroy – The Life Feat. Penguin Prison’
’Mystery Skulls – Ghost (Viceroy Remix)’

Jessie Andrews:

’Jessie Andrews – You Won’t Forget Tonight Feat. Comets We Fall’
’Slim Fit Jeans’

Troy Kurtz:

’Casino Gold – All I Need (Troy Kurtz Remix)’
’The Rolling Stones – Miss You (Troy Kurtz & Pirate Stereo Mix)’

Bees Knees:

’Kill Paris – Falling In Love Again Feat. Marty Rod & Alma (Kill Paris & Bee’s Knees Keytar Mix)’
’Robin Thicke – Blurred Lines ft. T.I., Pharrell (Bee’s Knees Remix)’

[Interview/Deep-House] TMN Gets Burnt With SNBRN + 50 Cent – 21 Questions (SNBRN Remix)

50 Cent
21 Questions (SNBRN Remix)

It’s safe to say that we’ve fallen absolutely head over heels for S0-Cal sunny house maestro SNBRN over the last few months. After two TMN premieres: a remix of Morgan Page’s anthem “In The Air” and a collaborative take with KLATCH on Ace of Base’s “All That She Wants”; both of which caught on like viral wildfire, we thought it was the perfect time to sit down with the blossoming producer and ask him a few questions on behalf of Ninja Land while simultaneously dropping SNBRN’s latest remix of 50 Cent’s “21 Questions”. About the new tune, SNBRN said: “I came across 21 questions a few weeks ago and I thought to myself, I have to remix this track. I wanted to create a fusion of nu disco meets hip hop while still keeping the flow of the vocals. The result was a bouncy, funky remix. Hope you guys enjoy this summer revival and remember to stay burnt.” It’s another refreshing take on a tune we didn’t think would work in the underground, but once again SNBRN revealed his knack for flipping tunes beautifully into dance territory. Check out the SNBRN remix of “21 Questions” above, grab the free download here, and read the full transcript of our interview below.

There always seems to be a wave of eclectic dance music emanating from the L.A. area. Does the surrounding music scene provide a bit of inspiration for you or do you try to shut in and work on your own sound without too much outside influence?

The surrounding scene does have a big roll in the music I produce. LA has become a hub for underground dance music, so I’m constantly being introduced to new tunes. I tend to not jump on the trend bag wagon and make music that I personally want to listen to. I wanted to create a hybrid sound of multiple genres and decades construed into a feeling that a lot of people can relate to.

So far you’ve remixed a couple tunes which premiered on The Music Ninja which were both on fairly opposite ends of the spectrum. First you reworked Morgan Page’s big-room anthem “In The Air” into an incredibly groovy indie-deep cut and then put a deeper, almost gargey lean on Ace of Base’s 90’s pop smash “All She Wants”. Now you’re taking another classic, this time of the hip-hop persuasion with 50 Cent’s “21 Questions” into “burnt” territory. How do you decide which tracks to remix for the most part?

The most important thing to me is originality, remixing tracks that haven’t been touched or that would take people by surprise. I usually start by listening to a bunch of tracks and artists I have written down over a few weeks and see if the track already has 1000 remixes. I then look for an acapella online and typically start by writing an entirely new chord progression to the vocals. I don’t like to use lots of pieces from the original, but more creating a whole new song from the vocal.

[Disco/Pop] Lemaitre – Wait feat. LOLO

Lemaitre
Wait feat. LOLO

While we might be a few days late to the party on this one, there was just no way we couldn’t feature Oslo electro-pop troupe Lemaitre and their latest single “Wait”; which features an alluring vocal from LOLO. A single from their forthcoming EP Singularity , due out tomorrow, July 22; “Wait” jumps off immediately with a subdued funk-guitar riff and classic piano stabs before bursting open behind LOLO’s exquisitely primed vocal track and huge snare kick. Structurally Lemaitre employs a very pop leaning backbone, but just past the tune’s halfway point, a heavy, but welcome dose of electro synth ushers in a high energy apex that meshes just wonderfully with LOLO’s infectious chorus. There just is simply nothing we can do but start dancing along to this one, which is also the reason it’s a Monday must have today. Lemaitre’s Singularity EP drops via Astralwerks, also home to Porter Robinson, Mat Zo and more TMN favorites, so be ready to get your hands on this one tomorrow.

[Indie/Synth-Pop] Mansions on the Moon – Don’t Tell

Mansions On The Moon
Don't Tell

If you’ve scrolled the pages of TMN regularly over the past few years, you may have realized that we absolutely adore most everything from alt-pop purveyors Mansions on the Moon. From their excellent Full Moon EP last year, which was championed around the TMN office as the year’s choice extended play by more than one staffer, all the way back to their first ever mixtape produced by Diplo & Benzi and everything in between; it’s safe to say we’ve been hooked on their uniquely sophisticated sound for years. Today, Ted Wendler, Ben Hazlegrove, Lane Shaw and Jeff Maccora are back with their first single in almost an entire calendar year, “Don’t Tell” and as with every passing album, we’re offered a slight shift in instrumental focus with all of the careful execution we’ve come to expect from the So-Cal troupe. Fueled by a punchy kickdrum before diving into an irresistible synth pattern and Wendler’s reverb soaked angelic refrain; “Don’t Tell” plays like just as much rooftop pop anthem as it does disco and funk fueled club number; striking a delicate balance between pop sensibilties & structure and expert musicianship. As if we weren’t already excited by this one, the real icing on the cake is that it is the lead single from an impending debut, self-titled Long Player due out on October 22, which we have been drooling for like one of Pavlov’s canines since our first taste of Mansions. About the forthcoming LP the band this to say: “The name, “Mansions On The Moon,” comes from the concept of turning a dream into reality, which for us, means making the best music we can possibly create. After countless studio sessions, nights of crashing on friends’ couches, and bus rides to mixing sessions – our Mansion On The Moon is here.” Keep your eyes on us as we’ll be following every single leading up to the LP’s official release, but until then, enjoy “Don’t Tell” above.
