[Denver Giveaway/Event Preview] TMN Presents: ASTR + The Knocks (Live) – 6/24/14 – Larimer Lounge

The Music Ninja is ecstatic to be presenting two of our absolute favorite burgeoning acts, both out of New York, ASTR and The Knocks (Live)  next Tuesday in Denver, CO.  There’s a veritable buzz circulating around the TMN office as of late, and it’s pretty safe to say that is has to do with June 24th. Just 6 months removed from their Varsity EP, ASTR, whose story sounds like something out of a movie, bring their cimmerian, R&B tinged brand of electronica and pop for the first time to Denver with an incredible supporting cast. Also on the stacked bill is a very special live set from nu-disco revivalists The Knocks. While they’ve brought performances with regularity to Denver in recent times, most have come in the form of DJ sets, and to have them plying their craft in their true vision is always an inviting, raucous experience. We’ve once again teamed  up with our friends at the Larimer Lounge to get you ninjas involved in what will be without a doubt a can’t miss concert and one of TMN’s most anticipated nights of 2014. We’re giving away not one, two or three, but FIVE pairs of tickets to our studious readers through Facebook (just follow the instructions below) and for our friends who would rather not take their chances and want to secure a place in what will be a tightly packed venue, grab your tickets here.

Entering is a breeze. Simply “like” The Music Ninja, ASTR and The Knocks Facebook pages and share our Facebook status here for a chance to win! The contest runs until the day of the show, June 24th, at 5:00 p.m., and our winners will be contacted via Facebook but there are a few rules of course:

– You must be 16 or over to enter.
– You are responsible for transportation to the venue
– You must bring a valid form of ID to pick up your tickets at the door..
– You must promise to have as much damn fun as possible on our behalf

[Pop/House] Blonde – Higher Ground (feat. Charli Taft)

Blonde
Higher Ground (feat. Charli Taft)

Fresh off of web-spanning single “Foolish” which included a stay at #1 in the ‘Popular’ charts on the almighty blog aggregator Hype Machine, consistent play on Radio One and over 1.5 million Soundcloud plays; the Bristol based electronic duo of Adam Englefield and Jacob Manson, more readily accessible as Blonde are back with another single shot in the pop-house revolution, “Higher Ground”. Featuring an ethereal and soaring vocal top line from Liverpool singer/songwriter Charli Taft, “Higher Ground” arrives synchronously with the recent wave of warm weather stateside behind an early 90’s house backbone, sunny synth line and sleek R&B structural sensibility which all culminate to send its listener smack dab in the middle of a figurative sunny rooftop terrace. “Higher Ground” functions as the lead track from an impending EP of the same name due out August 10 through FFRR, and if its supporting tunes remain as pristine and full as Blonde’s last few original production entries, we think it may surely end up as one of those envious crossover records on multiple end-of-year lists in 2014. Blonde is currently getting prepared for a hectic slew of performances during festival season with sets scheduled at Creamfields, Bestival, Wireless and Glastonbury just to name a few, which for our U.K. and proper house fans should incite a little wave of musical euphoria as it did with us ninjas. So in anticipation, check out “Higher Ground” from Blonde above.

[Deep-House/Garage] Sam Smith – La La La (Eric David Remix)

Sam Smith
La La La (ERIC DAVID REMIX)

Every once in a while, a tune will surface seemingly out of the blue, only to steal your ears and heart in the process, while leaving you all the more bewildered as to how said track made its way onto your listening palate in the first place. Such was the case with upstart Denver producer Eric David’s remix of the highly infectious Sam Smith cut “La La La”, which unexpectedly cropped up in our Soundcloud feed this morning. The clearly adept producer rolls this one out behind a deep four-four kick drum and chopped version of the “La La La” vocal hook before ushering in the first wave of groovy synth behind a classic piano line. And, as if we all didn’t know, Sam Smith’s moldable reverberations echo exquisitely through David’s reworked instrumentation including some shufflin’ and jackin’ hi-hats. Not much is known about Eric David at the moment, but you can grab the free download here, and we’ll be on the lookout to see what else the future holds for this unexpected house spark plug, especially behind our first taste.

[House] No Doubt – Hella Good (Dr. Fresch Summer Revival Remix)

No Doubt
Hella Good (Dr. Fresch's Summer Revival Remix)

With temperatures rising stateside, our auditory focus always begins to shift upwards towards more radiant, sunlit sounds, especially in regards to dance music. So right when we were in need of some honey-coated shake inducing deep rhythms, L.A. house purveyor Dr. Fresch gifted us with his newest remix; this time of No Doubt’s 2001 pop smash “Hella Good”. While the original tune doesn’t exactly scream pool vibes or palm trees aside from lyrical content, Dr. Fresch has reinvigorated “Hella Good” and Gwen Stefani’s luscious, powerful vocals with signature highs and a rooted bass line; but taking this edit to even greater heights is an absurdly groovy alto-saxophone line written and performed by Sapphire Adizes which just oozes sexiness. We’ve been all ears to Dr. Fresch’s latest string of remixes, and today’s will certainly keep us in that piqued state of mind. Grab a Mai-Tai, slip on a little Summery dance attire and grab the free download to kick this Hump Day into gear.

The Notorious B.I.G. – Big Poppa (Lucas Chambon Remix)

We’ve heard hundreds of “Big Poppa” remixes, but none have come close to Lucas Chambon’s NuDisco flip! The summertime vibes will lift your spirits, and the funky bass line and percussion are sure to have your body swaying. Somehow this French producer was able to slip by our radar. When we posted a De Hofnar tune recently I took a moment to peep through all of the people he was following. I’m pretty excited that I did, otherwise we would have never been able to share this with you!

[Nu-Disco] Michael Jackson – Love Never Felt So Good (Slinger Remix)

Michael Jackson
Love Never Felt So Good (Slinger Remix)

Fresh off of one of our favorite Nu-Disco takes on popular music, Slinger returns again to grace these hallowed pages of TMN with a high-energy disco rewrite of Michael Jackson’s posthumous charting single “Love Never Felt So Good”. Already with remixes of Prince and Pharrell under his belt, it was the perfect window for that glossy and ultimately mysterious nu-disco of Slinger to wrap itself up with the inimitable vocals from the King of Pop. Slinger’s remix begins with washy synth pads fueled by a simple upscale of strings before an exploding kick drum clears quite the followable auditory path for the tune to build into a dance floor assault. Again we’re taken one step further with the addition of a classic house piano and even a slight pan-flutey breakdown to pull a smile from even the most serious of dance groovers. Once again, this one is being given away in exchange for a Facebook like, so hop to it Ninjas.

[Chill/House] Donnell Jones – U Know What’s Up (option4 Remix)

Donell Jones
U Know What's Up (option4 Remix)

It’s been a bit since we’ve had the pleasure of featuring the groovy addictive electronic sound of rising producer option4, excluding our convivial group interview at Snowball Music Festival in Denver a few month back, so when the burgeoning house fixture sent over his latest remix of the classic Donnell Jones vocal track “U Know What’s Up”, we were chomping at the bit. Needless to say, option4 has once again hit the mark with a savvy dance rearrangement tipping the scales from sultry pop to club-house goodness all the way into the jacking sound more closely associated with early Chicago Trax records. That’s part of option4’s alluring mystique though; a unique and vast understanding of all things dance, employed with a forward thinking, intoxicating spin. Not to mention this latest composition just simply oozes sexy, and on top of that, is available as a free download. There certainly seems to be a reason option4 has been paired up with Moby, Empire of the Sun, Flume and The Bloody Beetroots in big markets like NYC, Denver and Seattle as well as stops at SXSW and Miami Music Week as of late; and if our electronic and dance aficionados out in Ninja haven’t gotten in on the secret, we highly suggest you do so now.
