Chicago’s Bestfriends may have released this buzzy-addictive piece of dance-pop a few weeks back, but as their forthcoming EP Refine inches closer to release we realized we hadn’t yet published their single “The Way I Feel” and had done a disservice to you Ninjas in the process. From the onset we were reeled in as a towering synthesizer emanates a contorted sea of arpeggiated keys which act as the tune’s fishing pole, while the simple and hooky seven line chorus is in turn the bait for which us fortuitous listeners are able to sink our teeth into. At first listen, it may seem a bit frenetic in structure, but “The Way I Feel” carries more than enough poppy sensibility to attract droves of plays from all walks of sonic backgrounds. Cologne upstart Roosevelt has been a blip on our ambitious radar for over a year, notably behind this writer’s favorite EP of 2013 Elliot, but today he’s peeled back yet another layer of production prowess, offering a smooth cover of John Martyn’s 1977 classic “Small Hours” which begs the attention of an entire blogosphere. Roosevelt cuts the original running time down significantly, routing his cover with a syrupy sweet downtempo melody and a focus on perhaps one of the most beautiful chorus line we’ve consumed in eons. “Keep on Lovin’ while your love is strong/Keep on lovin’ til your love is gone…away” may be simplistic on paper, but such a highly emotive vocal sang by Roosevelt stirred our pot in the perfect direction and adds an entire new dimension of depth to the ambient original. “Small Hours” is being pushed as a single on Joe Goddard’s tastemaking imprint Greco-Roman, and judging by the fact that we adore most anything from their camp, we were plenty excited that they were the genius music minds behind its release. As the most popular electronic sounds stateside begin to stray away from gigantic stadium-sized drops coupled with over-the-top lasers, strobes and everything in between; we’ve been gifted with a renaissance of sorts -back to the purest forms of house and its many offspring- thanks in part to efficacious artists like Brooklyn duo Walker & Royce. Sam Walker and Gavin Royce have been plying their stirringly groovy brand of deep-house since 2011 to great critical response behind singles on some of the most influential taste-making imprints in the game including Crosstown Rebels, OFF and Pets Recordings along with the shining and untouchable distinction of being tabbed as one of legendary Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong’s “Future Stars” back in October . Today, they’ve gifted us with a brand new original tune, “Insanity” and we couldn’t wait to share it with you Ninjas. “Insanity” kicks off out of the gate behind a compressed kick drum leading into some entrancing synth work and a welcome vocal track spliced from ‘Mr. Let’s Get It On’ himself, Marvin Gaye. Let’s face it. Duke Dumont’s uber-addictive single “I Got U” was bound to father a slew of remixes from the moment it began receiving its due diligence in live sets from the world’s most influential dance artists. So when we heard about an entire EP being put out behind the clubby house tune, we crossed our fingers hoping that a suitable slate of talented producers would be there to move “I Got U” under their vision. We were more than pleased with the way remix duties were handed out, especially when we discovered Swedish artist Jonas Rathsman was amongst those commissioned. We last featured Rathsman on a stunning original track “I Feel What I Feel” late last year, which was put out on tastemaking dance imprint French Express and in the time since, the Swedish producer has remained relatively quiet except for a few remixes. Suffice it to say, when we got a chance to glue our ears to his trademark brand of dreamy house and disko painted over the Duke’s dance-floor hit, we couldn’t help but be thrilled. Jonas executes his version masterfully, using much of the original stems as its core but infuses a healthy bit of atmospheric tinge throughout. If you’re feeling this one like we were, be sure to look out for the entire EP, featuring remixes by TMN favorites MK, Tensnake, Bondax, and High Contrast. It’s safe to say that the genre tag “deep-house” gets thrown around pretty haphazardly at the moment. We’ve overheard more than our fair share of dance music “aficionados” lumping groups like Disclosure or Bondax under the distinction simply because they are alternatives to commercial EDM, feature some similar sound structuring and run a little slower than those stadium sized electro anthems. However, when we talk about deep-house here at TMN it is most likely pertaining to the pure and soulful archetypal variety. Today brings us a proper house debut from veteran underground DJ and producer Danny Marin, “Searchin”, which is being put out on Night Supply. An intoxicating and bouncy cut in nature, “Searchin” kicks off into a hypnotic house groove under the guise of compressed kicks, sculpted pads and a deep lead synth and bassline. Further glossing up the track is an elegantly pulled vocal slice from Bloody Beetroots and Greta Svabo Beich’s past collaboration “Chronicles of Fallen Love” which adds just the perfect amount of human element to insure “Searchin” a healthy amount of crossover playability, and judging from some of his live 2013 performances with the likes of MK, Cyril Hahn, Ryan Hemsworth, J Phlip and Moon Boots it seems the house guru can and will appeal to any number of differing listeners as well. In preparation for their upcoming 4th studio album, electro-funk legends Chromeo have dropped a number of incredibly addictive, feel-good songs in the last few months. Today, the Canadian duo unleashed “Jealous,” yet another testament to their ability to capture the groove of old-school funk, while utilizing the new age sounds of EDM.

In the span of just a few recent releases, L.A.’s Dr. Fresch has quickly become one of our go-to sources of consistently proper Disko and House music. We last featured the line-towing producer with the release of a self-titled EP on his own Prep School Recordings imprint, which we fell head over heels for and today we’re happy to bring TMN another slice of the Dr. Fresch picture. Fusing vocal elements from two classic tracks -Animotion’s sticky sweet 80’s heater “Obsession” spliced with a tinge of Nate Dogg’s “I Got Love”- “You’re My Obsession” occupies a unique space between mainstream and underground while exuding the kind of dance credibility most producers yearn for. It was out of the blue that Dr. Fresch was mused to produce this one, from a classic video game session of GTA: Vice City as Animotion’s hypnotic anthem struck an inspirational chord with the producer, undoubtedly while virtually mowing down hoards of police and innocent civilians (because we hear that’s what goes on in those games). He’s been quoted as saying “I was playing GTA: Vice City a couple months back and got inspired to remix my favorite track from the game, “Obsession”. Then, I sprinkled a little Nate Dogg vocal on top, and this is what I came up with.” Well as simple as that sounds, we know there was much more to it than that but we really, really like it.
