Hold On, We’re Going For The Remix – The Best Remixes & Covers of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home”

Last week was Drake‘s birthday (October 24th), and in order to properly celebrate his 27th year on this earth, we’ve put together a nice little belated gift for October’s Very Own. Below we’ve compiled 22 (because 20 just wasn’t enough) of the best covers and remixes of possibly the most addicting single to drop this year, “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” It’s almost astonishing how many unique renditions of the track we were able to find during our search, making it incredibly tough to narrow down our selection. Nonetheless, we’ve broken them down for you into two separate collections of 11 songs each, listed in no particular order. Even the staunchest Drizzy haters will find something to enjoy here, with revisions that range from the garage rock stylings of Arctic Monkeys to the festival friendly Max Methods refix and everything in between.

Check out all the different selections below, and let us know if there’s any that we might’ve missed!

[House] option4 – Late Night Drop

option4
Late Night Drop (Original Mix)

option4 is a name which has been featured here at TMN a few times now, and for absolutely good reason. His brand of dance music has been self-described as “more house than tech, more deep than disco” and we couldn’t have coined it any better ourselves. “Late Night Drop”, the latest effort from the budding producer, certainly flashes influence from each of those aforementioned electronic genres, relying on a distinct set of synths to wind itself into afterhours party territory but more than enough pop sensibility to crossover to a multitude of listeners. That signature option4 bounce is all still there, but this time is cleverly dispatched amongst a sea of dark, luscious pads and shuffling hi-hats for a deeper groove and another glimpse into the diversity of his glowing production standard. “Late Night Drop” is being given away as a free digital download through Night Supply Records, so be sure to grab your copy here and be on the lookout for more option4 tunes in the near future, Ninjas.

[Chill-House] Passenger – Let Her Go (Kygo Remix)

Passenger
Let Her Go (Kygo Remix) Free Download

Boy have we got quite the lovely, uplifting electronic tune for you Ninjas today. 22 year-old Norwegian Kygo has retooled Passenger’s lovelorn, acoustic ditty “Let Her Go” into a mature and sensuous house ballad which stands miles apart from the original. Kygo’s remix begins with an almost contemporary 80’s feel à la early Genesis, riding on a hollow rim-snare kick and poppy highs before a low and lush synth is worked on top of  the entire production. Furthermore, the work done vocally – pitching them down, folding them into an airy but profoundly rooted synthesizer melody and working them in as a welcome and distinct addition to the entire fold – is just stunning, and enveloped every aspect of my senses along the 7 minute listening journey. It was high time Kygo earned his own writeup after a couple appearances on our always amazing Chill Dojo and there is no doubt that we will see this burgeoning talent once again grace the pages of TMN in the near future especially after such a captivating start. As an even brighter bonus, the remix is up for free download on Soundcloud, so please go get your listen on.

[Chill-House] Of Monsters and Men – Little Talks (Thomas Jack Remix)

Little Talks (Thomas Jack Remix)
Of Monsters and Men

20 year-old house wunderkind Thomas Jack has been blessed with the King Midas touch as of late (speaking of course in terms of production), spawning four #1 stints upon the Hype Machine charts within only two months, and his latest remix effort will surely follow suit. The native of Sydney, Australia has taken indie-folk superstars Of Monsters and Men’s uber-successful single “Little Talks” and flipped it into a surprisingly workable, tropical house rhythm. Never once when perusing through the original did we dream of taking Of Monsters and Men to the dance hall, but once again Thomas Jack has sprinkled some more of that Down Under fairy dust all over the tune and fostered another chilled out, but vibrant and catchy piece of dance music. Once again, all it takes is a Facebook like to take this one home, so be sure to hop on it.

[Interview] TMN Chats It Up With Yeah Boy

Yeah Boy
Can't Get Enough

So rarely does a music project debut as a fully developed and functioning artistic medium, but when they do, it is especially easy for us here at TMN to take notice. Such was the case with the side project of Parachute Youth’s Johnny Castro; Yeah Boy, and his electronically textured debut single “Can’t Get Enough”, which dropped back in August. This one, due out October 6 on Baked Goods, follows the path of a funky, feel-good Summer groover, but is awash in elements from a multitude of genres. A flitty electric guitar, which wouldn’t be out of place on an 80’s funk record tones the tune, while a beatific melody ties together a reverb soaked vocal track, deep synth work and housey piano licks. The resulting product was a sound we just couldn’t get out of our heads, and one which warranted some probing for more information from the largely mysterious Yeah Boy.

We had the opportunity to dig a little deeper into the psyche of Johnny Castro and his music project(s), finding out what is on the horizon musically in the coming months, what his recording process has been like, Daft Punk, Pink Floyd concerts and a whole bunch more. Check out the entire transcript below:

We imagine that your two-piece Parachute Youth takes up quite a bit of free time. What was the deciding factor in sort of breaking away for a bit to focus on your solo work with Yeah Boy?

I think it was simply wanting to write something different and having a completely different approach in my songwriting. I’m loving going back to my roots and writing/singing more soulful/funky vibes and its something you need to explore on your own I think when you have a band with a completely different sound.

What sound differentiations are you able to focus on with Yeah Boy that might not have gone over as well with Parachute Youth?

I think going more hip hop/soulful, which is where I started in the first place. Parachute Youth has a distinct sound and we push that sound to define who we are as a band, I’m ready to do the same with Yeah Boy, which explores my inner love for experimental hip hop/soul.

With basically only one single out at this time, can you enlighten us a little more about your forthcoming EP, such as title, release date, etc. Will most of the material be in the same instrumental vein as “Can’t Get Enough” or have you been playing with all different types of sounds?

There’s going to be some changes of course! ‘Can’t Get Enough’ was a great door opener and showed that I do love writing something very different than usual that can still come across as a pop record. I’ll be working with different artists for this EP also to explore the true potential of Yeah Boy and where I want to go with it. It’s still early days but expect a cool EP 🙂

[Nu-Disco] Chromeo – Over Your Shoulder

Chromeo
Over Your Shoulder

Don’t look “Over Your Shoulder” but 2013 has pretty much all but flown by. As daunting as that may sound though, we still have plenty of time to soak up some good tunes this year, with a few of our favorite artists still yet to release their highly anticipated projects. We can now add one more group into the mix as Chromeo returns onto the scene with a smashing new single (yes, I did just use smashing there). In all seriousness though, this funky new track continues the disco revival we’ve been hearing all year, and I can assure you, we are definitely not complaining. Do yourself a favor and download a free copy of the single above, and check out the trailer for Chromeo’s upcoming album, White Women, below.
