Owl Eyes – Jewels & Sapphires (Goldroom Remix)

Owl Eyes
Jewels & Sapphires (Goldroom Remix)

As sounds emanating from America’s biggest club nights have slowly begun to shift from jacking, four-to-the-floor big-room anthems and wubby, extreme bass towards more groove-heavy sounds from genres like Electro, Trance, Nu-Disco, Deep-House, Future Bass, U.K. garage and funk, Synth-Pop and countless others; it is starting to become clear that the underground club scene has begun to leak into mainstream consciousness, and there are a handful of producers from each respective field who are in part responsible for the recent awareness in their music movements. There is no doubt that if you look into the Nu-disco phenomenon under a magnifying glass that you would come across Los Angeles based disco-purveyor Goldroom. Although most of their original material now comes with the support of a complete live act, most remixes remain producer Josh Legg’s dance outlet and today he’s blessed us with another original remix for Owl Eyes’ single “Jewels & Sapphires”. Goldroom has stripped away much of the original instrumentation in favor of a more gyration-friendly bass line and Summery steel drum, while keeping the track’s integrity and simultaneously highlighting Owl Eyes’ (aka Brooke Adammo) deep, vibrant vocals. The remix is set to be released as part of Owl Eyes’ forthcoming EP, which has yet to receive an official release date, but we will keep you posted as always. Stay Ninja.

Crystal Fighters – You & I (Gigamesh Remix)

Crystal Fighters
You & I (Gigamesh remix)

Few DJ’s and producers are fixed with that coveted “dance-floor tastemaker” tag more so than Minneapolis native Gigamesh, and with such an eclectic range of original compositions and impeccable choices in remixing, it is pretty clear as to why. Recently, the electronic trendsetter wrapped up an impressive worldwide tour with stops in Asia, australia and the U.K., and it didn’t take long to flex his production muscles once more.  His latest track, a remix of Spanish folktronica trio Crystal Fighters‘ “You & I” is carried into a Nu-Disco frenzy by a very Night Rider-esque synthesizer, exaggerated percussion and a four-to-the-floor heartbeat. The bait to our ears on this one comes at about the 3:00 minute mark, as Gigamesh boldy breaks the track down to a near screeching halt before launching back into more danceable instrumentation. A little deviation from the rules on a club track always puts a smile on the face of this Ninja. Crystal Fighters have been large proponents of the remix treatment, even going as far as to release a complete remix album to go along with their last LP Star of Love, and Gigamesh has done them justice again painting his patented sound onto theirs.

[Synth-Pop] Club 8 – I’m Not Gonna Grow Old

Club 8
I'm Not Gonna Grow Old

The second taste  from Swedish indie-pop group Club 8‘s forthcoming album Above the City, “I’m Not Gonna Grow Old” sees them move away from the darker, italo-disco sounds of previous single “Stop Taking My Time” and more towards straight 70’s disco meets 80’s synth-pop. Lead singer Karolina Komstedt’s delicate, but dignified vocals soar sky-high above Johan Angergård’s focused production, and why shouldn’t they? Throughout the past decade the duo has proven a mastery of a multitude of pop sub-genres and “I’m Not Gonna Grow Old” is no different. Above the City is due out May 21 through one of Sweden’s most reliable indie-pop labels Labrador Records, and as a Ninja hook-up you can pre-order the release here. Just try not to release your inner late 80’s Madonna while grooving to this one if you’re in public… or do because we love that kind of thing.

Valentina – Wolves (The Svens Remix)

Valentina
Wolves (The Svens Remix)

Joe Goddard and Greco-Roman Records have built a solid reputation in part by helping break the music careers of rising electronic trendsetter T-E-E-D and Disclosure. The newest addition to their stable (whom we featured earlier this month), Valentina, already appears to be another clear cut hit for the Berlin to London collective. The sultry pop singer has seen her stock begin to rise amongst tastemakers worldwide with the release of her single “Wolves” two months ago, and while a healthy buzz has been picking up amongst the blogosphere, fans were left in limbo as the April 18 release date of her EP of the same name had been pushed back indefinitely. All has been patched up now as a June 5 date has been handed down by label brass, and in anticipation, Greco-Roman is leaking a few remixes that will surface on the release. Giving the dreary ballad a glitzy deep-house remix today is Scandinavian duo The Svens, and this one had the ol’ rump shaking harder than Wreckx n Effect did in ‘92. Featuring Valentina’s celestial vocals wrapped in a hypnotic house drum kick, The Svens managed to pair their club sound seductively with hers, creating a cut appropriate for peak-hour club sets or more turned down after-party affairs. As an even bigger midweek treat to our ninjas, the track has been offered up as a free download in anticipation of the Wolves EP drop, so do yourself a solid by getting those dance-muscles in shape and picking it up here.

[Album Review] Allure – Reunion

What is it about French musicians and their acute mastery of all sounds electronic? 23 year-old Lorris Piasco, more commonly recognized by his production alias Allure, is an attractively fresh face in a long line of talented house and electronic producers hailing from Paris. Allure has just dropped his second full length album Reunion, and “The Little Prince of French Electro”’s latest release utilizes elements of classic disco, house, pop-song structuring and a classic four-to-the-floor drumkick all awash in jazzy harmonies and clean synths. The end result is a finished, cohesive piece of work that feels oh so provocative, yet irresistibly danceable. Allure makes the kind of electro that has a live feel, as if an entire band was involved in the production rather than just one man and an intimidating set of electronic gadgetry. It is a quality that gives his music a human feel, although it is mostly robotic in execution.

Citing influences that range diversely from Prince, Bowie and Stevie Wonder to more symbiotic sounds from Justice and of course Daft Punk, there is no denying that the weight of said artists comes through in the catchiness of Allure’s “funky baroque” electro sound. Taking Reunion even one step higher though (musically of course), were seemingly perfect vocal contributions from some of his French contemporaries in Alexia Gredy on “Nobody Dance” and Jordan Lee featured twice on “Pretty Bad Day” and “I Will Change”.
