[Amazing] Phonat – Never EP

Hailing from possibly one of the best cities in the world, Florentine seven foot beatsmith Phonat dropped a four track EP a few weeks ago, and it’s pretty damn amazing. Seamlessly fusing countless genres, this eclectic synergy of musical expression has us pressing play over and over again.

The Never EP boasts four tunes, two originals and two subsequent remixes of the title track. First up on the EP is a 70’s inspired glitch-hop tune that gracefully highlights sinfully delicious guitar work, coupled with a raw yet smooth funk vocal sample. While “Never” as a whole has an underground hip hop feel, the melodic synth work really brings it full circle back to the dancefloor.

One of the remixes that accompanies this tune comes via UK based Asa and Sorrow, and comes in fierce with some dialed up drum work. While the attitude-rich funk vibes are still apparent, the tune is turned on its head with some razor sharp DnB basslines and meticulous drum hits.

Icarus creates a laid-back version of the aforementioned track, relying heavily on a soulful groove and some 80’s style synths. Giving “Never” a more mainstream persona, this remix maintains the original appeal while taking on a whole new look and feel.

“Phase to Face,” has a delightfully broken nature, featuring classic DnB style vocals. While one would expect a normal progression of rapid snare and hi hats, they would actually be mistaken. In a fluttering culmination of break-beat drums and wobbling bass, melodic synths draw everything together in something that’s both wildly unexpected, yet incredibly attractive.

This EP is ready and available for you to purchase. We highly recommend you do so.

[Electronica] Blackedout – Champagne

Blackedout
Champagne

After penning a very solid debut EP, mysterious melodic downtempo producer Blackedout has just graced us with his latest take on atmospheric electronicism, “Champagne”. If we’re equating the title of the track to its sound, perhaps “Lean” would be a better suited title. Blackedout’s appliance of those spaced out drums really give “Champagne” the room it needs to build, simultaneously inducing an unconscious, albeit slowed down hip sway and head nod from its listener before blossoming into a full blown, highly layered melody. Further giving Blackedout’s new tune a little more gangster lean is an appropriately decelerated and spliced vocal sample from The Spinners’ “It’s a Shame” and shades of a Shlohmo or Ta-Ku influenced drum kick. Let “Champagne” and its mild, soft-hued vibes slink you down on your couch today after work, between classes, or wherever it is that you find some time to unwind and grab the free download above.

[NEW] Childish Gambino – Earth: The Oldest Computer (The Last Night) (Feat. Azealia Banks)

Childish Gambino
Earth: The Oldest Computer (The Last Night) (Feat. Azealia Banks)

Spastic, reverberating, and high-energy make this new Childish Gambino single an addictive listen. “The Oldest Computer (The Last Night)” starts with a tranquil synth-beat intro that features the actor turned rapper singing the chorus. What starts peaceful quickly flips into a drum and bass fueled, pulsating electro beat that continues to grow in tempo and infectiousness. Don’t be fooled by the soft beginning, as Bino still manages to squeeze in some bars later in the track.

In contrast to his chill collaboration with Def Jam’s Jhene Aiko, “Bed Peace,” Childish enlists the vocal talents of Azealia Banks. No stranger to sporadic dance rhythms and synth-heavy production, the Harlem rapper trades tongue-twisting rhymes for some smooth crooning on the hook. As the single progresses over the four minutes, the mix of hard and soft melodies is abandoned at the last minute when the song erupts into pure pandemonium. This is yet another dope release from the young spitter and will be featured on his upcoming sophomore LP Because the Internet, available for pre-order now.
