[Electronic/Ambient] I’lls – Keep

I'lls
Keep

As we wind down our Friday afternoon, slowly scanning through our inbox, with drink in hand, we’re happily coming across tracks we missed earlier this week. Let’s be honest here, if we don’t catch them today, they’ll surely be buried by hundreds more come Monday morning.

Released earlier this week, I’lls’ “Keep” is a luscious, ambient, and emotive song from this inventive trio. It leaves an everlasting remembrance of acts like Burial and Aphex Twin, yet stands tall on its own. Listeners can expect a well-crated, thoughtful, and enveloping soundscape which is coupled with gorgeous,  subdued lead vocals, and haunting monastery-esque backup vocals, all of which provide a wonderfully inescapable retreat.

This is the second track released off of Can I Go With You To Go Back To my Country. We highly recommend grabbing it by clicking here.

[Electronic] Panda Bear – Crosswords (Pete Rock Remix)

Panda Bear
Crosswords (Pete Rock Remix)

As we are now over halfway through the year, some of us music writers already start formulating our albums of the year list. Yes I know, it’s a bit early to be thinking about year end lists already, but such is the game inside the online publication world. One such album which is guaranteed to crop up near the top of countless such lists is Animal Collective founding member and acclaimed solo artist Noah Lennox, a.k.a. Panda Bear‘s excellent catalog addition, Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper. The LP takes on countless sonic mediums, never quite resting its laurels on any one sound; simultaneously functioning as a composition ripe for the remix picking. Needless to say, when we were tipped to a new remix EP, PBVSGR Remixes, to accompany the solid release, our pavlovian response manifested itself in the form of salivation. The third remix single to be released from the package after Andy Stott warped “Boys Latin” and Danny L. Harle took on “Come to Your Senses”, comes from Grammy Award winning Hip-Hop production legend Pete Rock, and it’s checked every box on our remix judgement-meter. An alternate but tasteful play on the original? Check. Gleaming production? Check. Keeping intact the original’s essence? Check.  Pete Rock’s nailed his revision, and we couldn’t wait to share it.

It’s Friday Ninjas, let’s start to get into that weekend spirit with Pete Rock’s “Crosswords” remix above. Check out the complete track listing for Panda Bear’s PBVSGR Remixes EP below.

[Electronic] Wild & Free – Tropique (Falqo Remix)

Wild & Free
Low Pressure (Falqo Remix)

Last month, we came across an excellent EP, Low Pressure, from L.A. based duo Wild & Free through Rock It Science Labs, and were immediately struck by their single “Tropique”. While we didn’t have a chance to feature the original, (as much as it pains this writer to reveal) we were blessed with underground dynamo Falqo‘s remix, and were even more entranced with “Tropique” than before. The Australian electronic savante pulls Wild & Free’s original towards a slightly more ambient sea of disco leaning modulation, landing somewhere between dance and chill. Which is exactly where we want to be this Thursday. Falqo’s slick implementation of the original stems flirts with a number of aural toys, from laidback chill-step to clubby house, but most importantly, it flirts heaviest with our ear drums.

Stream Falqo’s remix above, grab a free download here, slip into something comfortable, grab your favorite adult beverage (or not if you’re illegal) and unwind your Thursday.

[Deep-House/Industrial] Golden Features – No One ft. Thelma Plum

Golden Features
No One Ft. Thelma Plum

There’s no secret here at TMN that this writer has been a little more than slightly enamored with Sydney’s notoriously masked dance dignitary Golden Features. Most recently landing on our pages with “Baxter”, Golden Features returns with the Thelma Plum led gritty deep-house cut “No One”. “No One” plays the part of Golden Features’ most accessible crossover single yet, with a lighter piano driven base basked in Plum’s elegantly soft vocals, however that’s not to say the grimy muscle with which we’ve come to crave isn’t there. Golden Features’ instrumentation pumps more than enough Berghain grit, classic Detroit techno spirit, London House sensibilities and Australian refinement to satisfy both those who’ve been fans since a self-titled EP surfaced just over a year ago, to those only now coming into contact with the Australian dynamo. In regards to this latest tune Golden Features remarked:  “After finishing everything else on the EP, I spent a month trying to write something in a radio format and lost my mind trying. I couldn’t bear working like that anymore so I abandoned it and started something new with no particular goal in mind other than having it sound good. The  instrumental to No One is the end result. A few days later somebody sent me Thelma’s soundcloud link and it just made sense…”

“No One” will be available as part of an impending EP, XXIV, due out June 19 with an accompanying headline tour slated to kick off June 27th. Check out Golden Features’ forthcoming tour dates below, and stream “No One” above.

[Festival Review] Four Days In The Life of a Ninja at Movement Music Festival

movement

All photos copyright and courtesy of Matthew Reyer & Black Tuesday

Detroit’s fabled Movement Electronic Music Festival (formerly DEMF) was a visceral experience to say the least. From the sternum throttling bass kicks of the world’s loudest soundsystems designed exactly for all facets of dance music, the artificial crunch of plastic bottles and beer cans condensing beneath our feet in a warehouse basement at 5:00 a.m., to the general amounts of love from nearly every corner of the industry; we had an engaging and wonderful time. And with new owners Paxahau doing most everything in their ability to ensure a great Memorial Day Weekend, for the most part, the shows went off without a hitch.

Our team arrived late Friday night, and with still at least a couple of hours left in the evening to party before Movement’s official kick off the following afternoon, we headed to Detroit’s gritty warehouse district for an incredibly deep and storied lineup featuring both Moodyman and Theo Parrish taking us all to the Church of House through a vinyl only, eclectic set fusing neo-jazz, classic disco and plenty of contemporary house and techno without well… too much mixing really. It was certainly a throwback night in every sense, even an ode to Paradise Garage maestro Larry Levan style mixing. It was great to get back to our roots, stop being so damn critical, just enjoy a couple of dance music legends and set the stage for our weekend.

[Indie Electronic] Bells Atlas – Sugar for the Queen

Bells Atlas
Sugar for the Queen

Bells Atlas have already established themselves as a local favorite in Oakland’s burgeoning music scene, and for good reason. The band’s brand of “kaleidosonic soul punch,” as they have so eloquently described it, masterfully mixes electronic and acoustic elements with soulful, avant-garde vocals for a hypnotizing sound. We had a chance to catch their performance at The New Parish a few weeks back and that style translates into an undeniably moving live experience.

Today, the talented four-piece released their latest EP, Hyperlust, a short-but-sweet collection of songs, many of which they’ve rolled out over the last few months. “Sugar for the Queen,” the second offering from the project, dropped yesterday and serves as a perfect introduction to their sound. It’s a dynamic and textured track that draws the listener in with duet vocals backed by unique guitar-plucking and scintillating percussion. The song steadily evolves into blissful psychedelia making for an enchanting, thought-provoking listen.

Flo Rida ft. Robin Thicke & Verdine White
I Don't Like, It I Love It (Kasum Remix)

Following the Blink 182 remix, Kasum is back with another infectious jam. Taking on “I Don’t Like It, I Love It” by Flo Rida, the NY-based producer provides a future bass rendition on the Top 40 track. Kasum manages to keep it fun and entertaining throughout the short duration of the tune, as there’s never dull moment. Cleverly sampling the whitsling, Robin Thicke‘s vocals and Flo Rida’s verse, it all results in an incredibly catchy song that’ll make you move up and down in a heartbeat.

With this release, Kasum once again proves that he can do it all. From progressive house to future bass, he can produce any trending sound for mass appeal. Out via Atlantic Records, this tune shows a new side of Kasum’s talents. Make sure to show some support if you like what you hear!
