[Festival Preview & Playlist] Movement Electronic Music Festival – 5/23-5/25 – Detroit, MI

Once a year, the best and brightest names in Techno, House (and its many iterations) and Disko converge on the city of Detroit for underground dance’s own version of a 3-day Happy Hour, and also one of the most important festivals within dance music’s rich history: the Movement Electronic Music Festival. This year’s lineup continues to set the bar globally for dance tastemakers, and with the full unveiling of their ‘Phase 2’ lineup, it’s clear to see how over the years Movement has been globally recognized for its unique talent curation and programming, showcasing artists from a wide-spectrum of up-and-comers, local luminaries, pioneers and trailblazers, and also the reason so many true dance fans treasure Movement above all other multi-day parties. Featuring some of today’s most notable names in dance music including Disclosure, KiNK (Live), Dixon, Soul Clap, Dog Blood, MK, Hot Since 82, Maya Jane Coles, Ten Walls (Live), Route 94, Tuskegee (Seth Troxler & The Martinez Brothers), Classixx,  Eats Everything, Maceo Plex & GRiZ to some of dance music’s literal genre architects, namely Kerri Chandler, Kevin Saunderson & Derrick May; and some incredibly choice lyricism from the likes of Danny Brown, Method Man, and People Under the Stairs, Movement 2015 looks to be the finest installment in its illustrious history.

We’ll be sending at least one Music Ninja on assignment for this one (expect a full TMN review after Movement’s conclusion) and we can’t wait to join our many friends as well. Tickets for the entire three-day excursion are still available for only $150.00, with single day GA clocking in at $65.00 which you can purchase here. [Chill] Maribou State – The Clown (feat. Pedestrian)

Maribou State
The Clown (feat. Pedestrian)

Maribou State‘s debut album is quickly becoming one of our most anticipated of the summer. Building on an array of the UK’s finest electronic styles, the production duo feel like an organic progression from their roots. This may be more evident than ever on their smooth, emotional, Pedestrian-featuring latest single. “The Clown” builds around a grand piano melody that when combined with a falsetto brings James Blake to mind before a percussive-driven groove emerges. The house tempo bolsters the flawless vocals and combines with occasional warped synths that tie together the songs’s steadily developing structure. It’s a colorful tune that draws at your heart strings and gets your head nodding simultaneously. Vibe above–Maribou State’s Portraits drops June 2nd and is available for pre-order here.

[Future Trap] Terra – Birthday Beauty (Party Platypus Remix)

Terra
Birthday Beauty (Party Platypus Remix)

Here’s a track to ease your daily struggles. Little is known about Party Platypus, but the mysterious producer sure knows how to bring out the fun in everybody. Stripping Terra‘s “Birthday Beauty” to bare bones, Party Platypus dresses it up with a trap beat and clever samples.

Hold me down my friends, we are the ones to show them out

The same sample is echoed throughout the whole track, and is tweaked each time around with more samples for more excitement. The chipmunked vocals and other crafty maneuvers are fused to create a sound resembling Trippy Turtle and Wave Racer. The upbeat and loosening vibe makes it one of those tunes you won’t ever get tired of listening to. Maybe he’s an actual animal producer, or maybe it’s just his moniker. But what we do know is that Party Platypus will make your day that much better with this lovely jam.

[Future] Tulpa – Deer Stared At Me (Clayjay Remix)

Tulpa
Deer Stared At Me (Clayjay Remix)

Don’t be fooled, this is not another mediocre future bass track that sounds like Tchami or Oliver Heldens. Clayjay, the 18-year-old from San Francisco, is cooking up something really special with his latest remix of Tulpa‘s “Deer Stared At Me”. Fusing future bass and trap elements, Clayjay manages to turn the amazing piano work from Tulpa into an epic tune. The minimalist approach and the bold synth melodies provide a total change-up from the beautiful keys, resembling the sound of Slow Magic. The more you listen to it, the more quickly you’ll fall in love with this track.

Clayjay possesses the new household sound. Make sure to check him out if you haven’t already, and grab a free download of this gem if you dig this. We’ll let his music do the talking.

[House] SNBRN – Raindrops (Hotel Garuda Remix)

SNBRN
Raindrops (Hotel Garuda Remix)

Before Hotel Garuda took on the future house scene, they were masters of the sax. Reworking SNBRN‘s “Raindrops”, the duo puts out a sax-y track that is reminiscent of their “Summertime Sadness” remix. The beginning melodies fill in just the right mood for the tune, and the deep bassline comes in for a dance breakdown. The emotionally driven vocals by Kerli are perfect for the electro-pop tune, as it captures hearts and makes everyone sing along. The fusion of summertime vibe and future bass works wonders.

Hotel Garuda manages to turn the electro-pop tune into a one-of-a-kind dance track. Picking just the right tunes for edit, the duo always finds a way to impress everyone. This remix will be available for purchase April 28, so get your popcorn ready because Hotel Garuda is about to take over the electronic dance scene.

[Electronic] Big Wild – Aftergold

Big Wild
Aftergold

Last month, production duo Odesza, a seemingly omnipresent force in electronic music, announced the launch of the Foreign Family Collective, an outlet they’ll be using to highlight their favorite up ‘n coming musicians and visual artists. After a strong first release, the second single from the series came yesterday with an absolute gem from Big WildThe LA-based producer, who supported Odesza on a few stops of their US Tour, has been bubbling on Soundcloud for over a year now with an approach to electronic music that combines live instrumentation with a similar emphasis on hip-hop and tribal inspired percussion as Odesza.

“Aftergold” may be Big Wild’s best work yet continuing the maturation of his sound with a playful backing beat that erupts into an addicting, enormous chorus layered with a powerful vocal sample. The track comes together as an anthemic composition and is sure to make you a fan if you aren’t yet familiar with Big Wild. Give it a listen and grab a free download above.
