[Electro] Charlie Darker – Guns For Hire (NGHTMRE Remix)

Charlie Darker
Guns For Hire (NGHTMRE Remix)

LA-based producer NGHTMRE just dropped this much anticipated remix of a Charlie Darker track titled “Guns For Hire”, and he’s definitely holding it down for all the club bangers and making a name for himself. Incorporating trap and dance into Charlie Darker’s electro-house goodness, NGHTMRE is definitely in his element. The buildup will leave you wanting more and more, and the epic drops will make you dance your pants off. It’s unique, catchy and the hard-hitting bass just seals the deal for everybody. Talk about a turn up jam!

Call me a psychic, but very soon you will probably hear this song at every club you go to. Needless to say, we would want to see more of this talented producer.

[Electronica] Odesza – Say My Name (Slow Magic Remix)

Odezsa
Say My Name (Slow Magic Remix)

Odesza‘s “Say My Name” has officially become one of the most remixed tunes ever since it came out alongside their In Return album. Everybody wants a piece of this delicious cake but not everyone gets a hold of its essence. Slow Magic‘s take on the song is probably, in our opinion, one of the best versions out there.

Featuring his very own father on the guitar solo, Slow Magic manages to put in his own twist to the already amazing collaboration. It starts off with his sweet signature piano chords, with the original chorus fading in the background. When the beat drops, it’s everything Slow Magic represents. The epic synths, the hardhitting drums and the killer guitar solo steal the spotlight for this remix while crediting the original tune. So much is put into the production of this rework that we can’t help but admire these talented musicians whose styles compliment each other so well. So go check it out above, give the other remixes from their ongoing competition a listen here, and tell us what you think!

[Electropop] Jaymes Young – I’ll Be Good

Jaymes Young
I'll Be Good

Oh dear, the talented Jaymes Young just released his Habits of My Heart EP, and let’s just say our ninja senses are tingling. The LA-based singer-songwriter gave us hearing pleasure from this gem titled “I’ll Be Good,” which is a more stripped down and softer tune compared to his usual electropop style that depends heavily on the bass. Every good EP/album needs that one song that takes it down slow but at the same time, gets to everyone’s emotional core; and this track does just that. The simple beat and his fingerpicking really showcase both his talents to go both hard and soft, but yet accentuates his butter-smooth voice. Hats off to you, Mr Young.

If you like groups like Sir Sly or The Kite String Tangle, grab a copy of his new EP and tell us what you think!

[Album Review/Stream] Lincoln Jesser – Modern Color

Much of today’s musical release climate is permeated by a steady influx of gigantic marketing campaigns behind singles, the occasional EP, and everything in between. Sadly, the disappearance of countless independent labels over the past 15  or so years has left this writer’s favorite release format, the long player, as somewhat of a novelty and a major gamble for smaller artists not signed to a major. So when one of our favorite rising sons of synth; indie-pop architect, Lincoln Jesser, announced the impending release of a debut LP, Modern Color, we were all ears on deck. To see such quality and a clear conceptual path put forth into an album format in 2014 without the backing of at least some type of indie is refreshing to say the least. Bending a bevy of electronic pop buoyed with a slick indie sensibility has been the auditory bait for more than a few of us Ninjas, as Jesser has become a regular amongst the pages of TMN over the past year through singles like “We’ll Be Fine”, “Wicked Son”, “Untold” (both of which can be found on Modern Color), “After_Love” and he’s put together quite the diverse, but focused collection of tunes to create his debut album.

Kicking off with an atmospheric, saccharine slice of indie-pop on “We’ll Be Fine”, Modern Color quickly highlights its superlative attributes through its opening tune: hooky, modulated synth lines and Jesser’s penetrating incantations. While “We’ll Be Fine”, a pop song in pure form, paces the LP; much of Jesser’s musical perspective on this one comes in the form of slower burning fragments. Tracks like “Untold”, and “Supertouch” provide an insightful glimpse into Jesser’s more emotive musical outlook on which Modern Color’s most poignant moments take place. But without the LP’s poppy respites on cuts like “Tops” & “Certainty” -which both dip into club-house territory along a flowing four-four kick and minimal electro house vibrations- and “Wicked Son”; those moments don’t feel like they’d come across as impactful. Modern Color closes its doors on the heels of two previously unreleased tunes, “Rolling Stones” and “Time Apart”; and both are an incredible close to a very worthy debut entry into the album form from Lincoln Jesser.

Modern Color is out now digitally and can be purchased on the cheap through iTunes, and for such a well thought out LP inauguration, we think it’s completely worth the squeeze. Stream Lincoln Jesser’s Modern Color below in its entirety

[Melodic House] Felix Jaehn feat. Chris Meid – One Last Time (Remix)

Felix Jaehn feat. Chris Meid
One Last Time Remix

Respected German producer Felix Jaehn just released this juicy Jaymes Young remix titled “One Last Time”. Also helped produce the track was London-based producer Chris Meid, who contributed to perfect this chill house goodness. Together they completely flipped the mood of the Jaymes Young song and turned it into this beachy and chill house tune, while keeping his vocals as the spotlight. The tropical synths and the sustained vocals really give it feel-good vibes. It is unlike any cliche house music you’ve listened to because of the slower paced beat and wave-like background noises.

This gem goes to showcase how talented these artists are for their ability to cross sub-genres while staying true to their music. Felix Jaehn is definitely one to watch, as he’s soon becoming one of the front runners of his genre and style of music.

[Event Review] Mad Decent Block Party – San Diego

(PC: Fixation Photography)

Last Sunday, following the recent heat wave that everybody would soon forget about, Mad Decent took their members and friends to sunny San Diego. The venue is located at Park Boulevard and Imperial Avenue near Petco Park and downtown SD. With only one giant stage put in the parking lot area, the artists definitely brought down the house with their high-energy performances and star power. Participating in this year’s lineup, we have artists like Cashmere Cat, Diplo, Flosstradamus, Laidback Luke, STRFKR, Thurz, TJR and Zeds Dead. It was a great mix of music, showing off their roster and connections with diversity.

With Kaytranada‘s set being cancelled due to personal reasons, STRFKR started off the one-day festival with some of their indie psych rock music to get the crowd in the mood. They put on a great show as people were just starting to roll into the venue and vibing their way into the crowd. Their mellow and enjoyable tunes are the epitome of a great band performing at a great festival.

Next up we have Thurz, a member of the underground hip-hop duo U-N-I. It was a smart choice for him to come on after an indie band. His high-energy performance definitely got the crowd going by playing some familiar rap songs and some of his own. At this point there was already a good amount of people in the audience, slowly and reluctantly making their way into the front of the stage even though the immense heat was getting onto everybody. Cashmere Cat, who was the next act, warmed up the crowd even more with his clever remixes of trap and hip hop tracks. His music covers a wide range of genres and sub-genres which take everybody on a fun and exciting joyride of both hype and chill music.

TJR was definitely the dark house of the festival. For those who weren’t familiar with who he is, the crowd referred him as “the mysterious bald guy who stole the show at Mad Decent”. The talented producer from Connecticut showcased his skillset with a variety of turn-up jams spanning the trap, house and funk genres. He incorporated funky drops and fast-paced trap beats into remixes of popular songs, which got the crowd pumped up like no other. His jaw-dropping performance definitely left the crowd in awe.

As the sun set and the heat gradually submerged into the horizon, the crowd was all warmed up and ready to get crazy. From the moment Laidback Luke got on stage, that’s when the real block party started. The Dutch DJ/producer got everybody on their feet and bobbing their head left and right with his incredible electro/deep house goodness. It is difficult as a house DJ to channel the right energy into a crowd at an open stage/venue, but Laidback Luke did just that. With lasers shining at your eyeballs, you just couldn’t help but dance your pants off to these hard-hitting house beats.

One amazing act following another, the artist introduced and welcomed Flosstradamus on stage. This is what the crowd came here to see, and what Floss were the best at doing. Needless to say, the Chicago-based duo delivered and killed it with style. The crowd was super loud and riled up, especially when they dropped a song like “Mosh Pit”, that there were a good amount of moshing going on throughout his set. To bring up the energy even more, the two hype men brought out special guest Waka Flocka, who gave his 110% at pumping up the stage with his anger and aggressiveness.

The headliner of the festival and Mad Decent’s frontman, Diplo, was undoubtedly the best act of the night. With so much energy and creativeness in his performance, Diplo always brings the most entertaining and trendiest electronic music to the stage. Mixing hip-hop with trap and electronica, the 35-year-old veteran never ceases to amaze everyone and never stops the innovation of his music. From taking off his shirt to bringing girls on stage for a twerk contest, Diplo sure knows what the crowd wants to hear and see. There was never a dull moment in the entire duration of Diplo’s set, and the crowd got about as loud and turnt up as they could be.

Amongst the shuffling pits, dance circles, exchange of kandies and fist pumping, the celebration never stopped for the Mad Decent crowd. Ending the night with a bang, Zeds Dead provided everyone with some hardcore drum & bass and dubstep. At this point, the lasers and lights were in full throttle. And with the heavy bass shaking the whole place down, you just couldn’t help but viciously headbang back and forth.

By assembling their roster and inviting friends and fellow artists to perform at their shows, Mad Decent has done it once again. With that said, our Ninja crew will be back for next year’s block party. We can’t wait to see what these talented performers have in store for us in the near future.

Coronus, The Terminator

Flying Lotus released yet another peek into his upcoming album today with “Coronus, The Terminator.” While the tracks we’ve heard thus far seem to lean a bit more towards the darkness of his 2010 album, Cosmogramma, the latest glimpse combines those vibes with the aesthetic of his most recent project, Until the Quiet Comes. The result is ominous, yet relaxed and glimmering, making for a laid-back, albeit brief, listening experience. Give this one a spin above–You’re Dead! is out October 7th via Warp Records.
