[Electronic] Giraffage – Tell Me

Giraffage
Tell Me

San Francisco producer Giraffage has been steadily gaining momentum over the last couple years developing a unique sound that combines electronic elements with hip-hop, R&B and lo-fi influences. Gearing up to release an EP later this month, the talented artist dropped off a gem of a first single last week and it’s certainly one of our favorites to date.

“Tell Me” starts off with a synth-driven, hi-hat heavy backdrop that makes way for a brilliant breakdown at the 1:18 mark. Through the track’s unorthodox arrangement, Giraffage brings the infectious, minimalistic melody to the forefront creating an atmosphere of absolute euphoria. Give this incredibly original cut a listen above–Giraffage’s No Reason EP drops on November 18th via Fool’s Gold Records and is available for pre-order here.

[Chillout] Dinnerdate – Memoire

Dinnerdate
Memoire

Dinnerdate has surprised us once again with this new release. This tune titled “Memoire” features the unique signature sound by the German producer which consists of a combination of deep/tropical house, nu-disco and indie. The occasionally-muffled vocals help accentuate the minimalist approach to the track, and the subtle piano chords blend right into the noisy background effects. It’s one of those tunes you just can’t get enough of even though you can’t really pinpoint what sticks out. It is just that catchy and memorable.

Go give this a listen and dream away! This tune is also available for download on his Facebook page.

[Festival Review + Playlist] Photos & Songs from Treasure Island 2014, SF 10/18-19

_MG_1990As regular festival attendees, the Ninja staff has definitely learned to appreciate a well-organized event and last weekend’s Treasure Island Music Festival proved once again to be one of the best in the business. With no overlapping sets and plenty of room to dance, TIMF, even in its most well-attended year to date, felt like a paradise for festivalgoers who, with the current popularity of live music, have become accustomed to the more stressful aspects of music festivals. Treasure Island’s 2014 lineup featured masterful curation of diverse genres encouraging attendees to check out acts they might not have otherwise.

Check out a playlist of memorable songs to go along with some amazing photos of MØ, Chet Faker Outkast, Alt-J and more from Treasure Island Music Festival below. If you were in attendance last weekend, we hope this brings you back!

Day 1

Why we loved it: Electro-pop vocalist MØ has been on our radar for quite some time now. As a performer, she has an undeniable energy with a voice that translates incredibly well live. Due to an eye infection, she was rocking an eye patch during her set, which actually ended up making her look even cooler on stage. TIMF2014_4 TIMF2014_5TIMF2014_6

[Hip-Hop] Rome Fortune – Small VVorld (Album)

Atlanta has long been home to some of hip-hop’s most unique characters dating back to Outkast‘s emergence, which not only opened the doors for southern rap in the mainstream, but also gave ATL emcees confidence to be as epically strange as they are today. Over the last year we’ve seen artists from Young Thug to Raury rise to prominence and their vastly different styles are a true testament to the diversity of creative minds coming out of the area. In the midst of countless burgeoning Atlanta artists, Rome Fortune has managed to stand out carving out a multi-faceted sound all his own.

After a series of impressive releases, Fortune’s debut project premiered on Billboard yesterday and it’s a must listen for hip-hop fans looking for music that pushes the genre forward. Small VVorld has a distinct abstract feel to it as Rome Fortune delivers his laid-back vocals over a truly impressive range of instrumentals. Aside from far-out production courtesy a few of the South’s many talented beat makers, Fortune teams up with experimental, electronic producers Four Tet and Bassnectar displaying an aptitude for songwriting over dynamic production. Although the emcee features are light, his tracks with oft-collaborator OG Maco display a clear chemistry and the cut “FriendsMaybe” with iLoveMakonnen is one of the most fun, memorable moments of the project.

In some ways, Fortune’s steez on the microphone over ethereal production brings to mind the “cloud rap” popularized by Bay Area acts like Main Attrakionz, while maintaining Atlanta’s trap influences and developing a compelling narrative. The result is one of the most progressive, creative rap projects of the year that we would describe in short as cloud-trap rap. Stream the whole project, and grab the free download, below.

[Electronica] Summer School – Nightly News

Summer School
Nightly News

Like his moniker, LA-based producer Summer School has a summery sound we just can’t get enough of. If you’re into old school video game music with a little bit of experimental synthwave, this unique tune titled “Nightly News” might just be the one for you.

The intro starts off with this hollowed chant, then proceeds to get into this 8-bit groovy synth that sets the stage for the whole track. The catchy high synths will definitely get you pumped and leave you headbanging ’til your head falls off. The wave-like sound that supports the melodies of the song is perfectly incorporated into the fast-paced jumpy beat. It also provides this chill vibe that gets you going with whatever you’re doing.

With that said, stay tuned for Summer School’s upcoming single “Control” that’s coming out 11/7. He’s one heck of an artist to watch for.
